Hey ppl, as some of you would know I recently (last couple of days) got my new car..

While it is running well I still would like to get some oils changed on it at get some new spark plugs in it as I know for sure that the compliancing guys did not replace the spark plugs, or the gearbox & diff. oil (they aren't required to)..

I'm wondering if you could recommend a good mechanics/workshop on the north shore in sydney that I could take it to and get the following done.

1. Spark plugs replaced with new copper ones (they are still the jap ones)

2. Engine, gearbox and differential oil changed

3. Radiator coolant flushed and replaced

From what I can tell this is a good start for a car that has come from japan.. everything is running sweet, only thing is when giving it a bit of stick tends to backfire when coming off the throttle.. that's about it - could have something to do with exhaust + possibly running a bit rich?? no carbon on the exhaust or on the rear of the car though..

Also - an estimated cost + time to do each of these would be great.. I do realise I could do all of these myself, however I don't have the tools or the garage area to do it. I mean - if someone wants to offer their services for a day I would love it, otherwise i'll drop it in somewhere..

from the top of my head - would take a couple of hous to get this done, draining all the shit out is easy, but has to be done before the spark plugs are done if it's on a hoist.. so prob 2 hours would have thought for a decent mechanic(maybe more?/less?)

Also - what oil's are recommended for each? should gearbox + diff be the same?

umm i think major service at our workshops are rated at 2 hours, maybe 2.2 if plugs are there too, however, it could be different, at nissan/mazda dealership were i work, our labour rate is $82, so i would say budget $200 plus parts and thats comfortable(should be).

as i dont think most places charge that rate for labour(would have to ring particular workshop).

either way, i would call a workshop, and get a quote.

i wouldnt know best workshops down there to do the work :s check with nsw guys.

gearbox and diff will be slightly different, alot of people recommend redline, some recommend motul stuff, its all a bit of personal preference. Personally, i have had no problems with motul engine oil. so ill stick with it.

With your backfiring problems, i personally would get a fresh import and get a dyno run, for a/f ratios, just to be safe. but thats me.

I service my own car ( but I'm a qualified mechanic and have all the tools etc. ) IMO If it's fun fiddly stuff on top, get some assistance and learn. But if you're planning on getting under a car and you really don't know what you're doing......don't !! Take it to a mechanic !

Example: About 4 and a half years ago a guy refused my help and did the work on his car himself only to have it fall on him which crushed his pelvis, hips and lower spine. He'll never walk again.

They have been great to me since I got my car. Did a full service with them when I 1st got the car. (approx 1.5g and about 6hrs of work, including timming belth change and all oils and fluids changed)

Powerplays are good too, but whenever I go there they are always busy, seems like Alistair needs a new mechanic or something, as he seems to be doing all the jobs there.

At the moment i'm going to do the following myself - 1. Spark Plugs, 2. Engine oil change, 3. gearbox oil change..

I'll take a look at my car and decide, they are in order of difficulty 2..

I should be alright, done some previous mechanical stuff + have a decent idea, just want to be sure, so goto find someone that will help me learn, or see if I can stick round @ a mechanics while he does everything..

Gladesville is a bit far from where I wanted to go (wanted somewhere I could drop it off to on the way to work), but i'll have to see - and find out how much it is..

I've been told about UAS before.. won't be going there + they are a long way from where I am..

Might look into DB4's.. there is another thread almost identical to this one.. might try and get it moved over.. anyone know anywhere in Artarmon - Chatswood - Hornsby area? has to be some..

I keep chuckling to myself, everytime I ask for places north, people suggest ones further away..

Anyways - this probably needs to be done anyway - finding the best places for servicing in sydney.

No, they don't do dyno tuning: they are a mechanic and compliance centre, not a aftermarket parts store/dyno/workshop like UAS et al.

Give them a call as I can't remember exactly what they charge. If you do a search you'll see plenty of people use Nathan and are very happy.

BD4s yea do lots of skylines and other nissans, they are HKS distributors in australia :D

The mechanic there (Yoshi) is japanese and knows lots about jap cars.. ;) Nathan is good also.

BD4s charge $88/hr for any fixes... And George is a reasonable guy.

I live near UNSW, and i go there for all my mechnical needs, its car but yea i like em :(

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
