If you were to upgrade the turbo on a 33 (or even running standard turbo) how much boost could you safely run?

The main reason I ask is because a mate said that the head gaskets on the 33's are crap and anything over 1 bar of boost and they can easily pop.

Is this true and is it common with both series1's and series 2's or did Nissan rectify this problem on the later series?

I would be looking to make about 250@wheels

There is nothing wrong with the standard head gasket people often go to a thicker head gasket when running high boost to lower the compression of the engine. From what I have heard 250@wheels should be fine with standard gasket with supporting mods injectors, fuel pump, ecu, turbo ect. Run no more than 10psi with the standard turbo as rule of thumb as the ceramic wheels are week. As for how much boost can I run if you are using an after market turbo it depends on what turbo you are talking about what mods you have ect.

agree with munna, you don't really want to push your standard turbo to hard i have heard you can run them safely 10psi and if you want to push it 12 - maybe 13 but thats pushing it a little. If you go the after market say a ball bearing as i have with all the bolt on bits eg. fmic, ecu, pod, injectors, fuel reg and pump i think you can push them up to about 16 - 18psi. Not 100% i am no expert just what i have heard on hear. At the monent i run 16psi on my R32 and thats pretty safe with out open the engine up for the other goodies

nah standard turbo man on r33 gtst run 10psi max to be safe, i have heard pplrunnin 12 and 15 but ya know depends how ya drive, and what ya do.

my car is tuned to run 8psi cause anythin over it ****in goes no where,

and is it 250 rear wheel kilowatts or horsepower.

cause horspower would be doable with a standard turbo

but kilowatts, mate you'll blow up the turbo b 4 gettin to there safely !!

250rwkw is not do-able on a standard turbo, injectors and management.

I was simply refering to the fact the RB25 will make that power without having head gasket issues, which was asked about above.

Who would waste time with a standard turbo in the hunt for power anyway. :D

I have a standard turbo, with and apexi pfc FMIC, and full custom exhaust.

Car is running 12psi, been like that for about 12 months plus, and I am always on boost (hence me fueling up alot :cheers: ) turbo is fine.

The head gasket is not what you have to worry about its the ceramic turbine in the stock turbo that is the weakest link when it comes to boosting up the psi. I would run 10psi to be safe but have heard still some people blowing there turbs at that pressure so it up to you if you want to risk it. Best bet if you want that power figure is to get a new turbo or high flow it to be safe. This topic has been discussed heaps on the forum do a search.

i run around .9-1 bar on my stock turbo.. after 140k's no shaft play on turbo and wheels arent warped neither are the housing. I run it on .5-.6 bar to put around town tho. around 1 bar is only for short spurts. I have some sort of engine management to keep the AF's in a great line :Dj:

Dude... Although 210 Rwkw sounds correct.. I'm pretty sure your not getting 729Nm of Torque God dam!!!! lol Unless your running 24+ pound boost 'in which you wouldn’t only be getting 210 rwkw'

so stock turbo aside.....the first part of the quiestion was "If you were to UPGRADE the turbo on a 33 how much boost can it hold"??

this is something i'd be keen to hear about myself, being i'm currently running a Hi-flow turbo on my 33 @ 18-20 psi....how far can I go before the head gasket gives way? i know short one off dyno runs an stuff it can handle a fair bit off boost, but what about with full boost being used for greater amounts of time...like say circuit racing or drifting?

Ive been running 12-13psi boost on stock turbo for the last year and still has no shaft play and never had a hickup.

I do have HKS Cams though so weather that has contributed to its longevity in pissing off exhaust through a straight through 3.5" turbo back with high flow cat *shrugs*

But i just bought a Highflowed TO4e :)

So if it blows i will let yous know how much boost i could squeeze in :cheers:

Not reading it wrong buddy on my dyno graph it has 2 lines kw and toq and in the top right corner it tells me max rwkw and it tells me max touque so hate to dissappoint you but i do have 729nm. I have a pretty big turbo on my car would that help such high reading it is a GT30 ballbearing the guy that i bought it off said it is good for 650hp+

I'm not car or torque expert I just thought this doesnt sound right out of my common sense. A ford FPV GT makes around 550 Nm T at the flywheel I believe, this is from a 5.7L V8 which is very torquey & i think it makes around 300 kw at the fly also. Now lets guestimate you have around 270 Kw (210 rwkw + 60kw drive train loss) at your fly on a 2L engine only running 16psi. Like I said, I dont know what the exact equations are for torque figures but I certainly know that 729 Nm T! is a absolute shit load for a 2L engine running under 20 pound. I mean stock Mercs V8 Supercharged cars make around this figure. A Holden Monaro with a Twin Turbo kit makes around 850 Nm T, so a 2L running 16 pound making 729 Nm T just doesn’t sound right to me.

Anybody else who actually knows more about torgue figures please but in? Where SK when you need him... He'd set things straight. 'regardless whos right or wrong'

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
