Can anyone recommend a good place to get a cat-back exhaust done in Adelaide?

Looking for mild steel 3" that's quiet but offers good performance. What's some figures I should expect to pay just just the cat-back?

Thanks.

there are many choices when it comes to exhaust. you can go to exhaust shops such as exhaust technology and get custom piping made up or go for 2nd hand jap branded exhaust. do you have a budget for your cat-back?

AAA Exhaust . I recommend them 110%, although you're cuttin it fine at $500.

Another recommendation for Gordon at AAA.

He did both halves of the exhaust on my car.

$500 supply and fit is ambitious to say the least, especially if you're looking at a custom system.

Don't bother with anything custom made for a Jap car - Jap brand names are the ONLY way to go. The R&D they put into the noise and flow is invaluable for import turbo cars.

Locally made ones tend to drone etc, and imho aren't up to the task.

Totally agree with you Guy (4dr sleeper ), if your going to spend your hard earned money do the job properly and do it once.If you dont have enough funds save for it you wont regret it!I made the mistake of doing it twice nearly 8yrs ago and the big difference was having a dump pipe and high flow race cat installed, its where the biggest advantage is to be gained for sure!!!

That's what I intend to do, possibly looking at BATMBL's twin dump and the catco (steel inside) cat. With those I'd still need a new cat back so that's what I'm looking for. :D

I take it you havent seen work done by AAA exhaust then. Theres no way a Jap system at 3x the price could be any better. In fact, for the same price, AAA would still give them a run for their money. Its all about the wank factor IMO. There is no R&D in a friggin straight 3" pipe. And their mufflers from what I have seen are no better than locally made stuff.

Full sik Apexi cannon! Another 50kw! Yerr mate..

nah Leo .... I saw a few years ago a program about Apexi exhausts, and how they actually built around 250 (slightly) different exhausts for the same car and tested dB and dyno power figures to get the best result. You would not believe how the smallest change in angle or resonator type/placement can make a huge difference in power or noise note/level. These guys have a massive income from exhausts and must deliver the quality and results. Joe Bloe the muffler man is simply going to make the straightest possible pipe and stick whatever brand resonator and muffler on it - I am sure every single exhaust would sound completely different (and dyno different) on locally made ones - yet you can pick by sound the brand of Jap exhausts - I can tell a Trust PEII a mile away.

I am yet to travel in a Japanese car with a custom exhaust that didn't drone and carry on like a pork chop at certain revs.

And as for cost, the Trust Power Extreme II (which I have on the S15) retails for around $1,200 fitted, but if you shop around can get it for around a grand. Can't see how that is 3x the price :D

I think the Jap made dump pipes and cats are not nearly as important (in terms of sound and power flow) as the rest of exhaust, and I use myself a Flyn performance front/dump pipe on the S15, and a 3" Catco cat (so there you go) :D

The R34 has a Jasma cat-back, and I have bought a segregated wastegate front pipe (from BATMBL) and a 3" XForce high flow cat (off Ebay), and I am going to combine them with an Apexi ECV (from BT Revolution on NS.com), so I'll see how that combination goes.

PM sent.

The price of off-the-shelf items today are pretty cheap, considering you can get GReddy full titanium cat-backs for $1300. So, saying Jap brands are 3x the price is a bit of an exaggeration. Generally the main difference between custom & Jap brand is the custom one has less degree bends & more ground clearance.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but cmon, for $1k I got a turbo back exhaust 3 years agp. Back then, you couldnt even smell a Jap catback for that money. Even ET wanted that much. Ziff...

If you are on a budget, dollar for dollar, Jap exhausts are not value for money IMO. Granted the price falls in the last few years have been significant in terms of japanese performance parts. Anyone remember how much PowerFCs were 3 years ago? Hahaha

I guess you need a ride in my car then. You barely even hear the exhaust at cruising speeds, with zero cabin drone. I agree I've seen alot of dodgy exhausts, but thats cos noone gets a proper center muffler. At least japs still use good center mufflers instead of those hotdog resonators that do absolutely nothin!

Ah well, horses for courses!

Btw pkblade, my exhaust only has one 20 degree bend besides the dump pipe.

    • This sounds very old of me, however since buying the Tiguan shit box, my view on shit boxes have changed.
    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
