Vq25Det Help!

Hey guys,

Recently picked up a 2001 250t RX four Stag. Got her cheap, but inherently with a few issues. Having a few problems sourcing an oil leak! If anyone has any ideas it would be an amazing help!

It isn't a big enough leak to lose too much oil and never drips on the ground. It does, however drip directly onto something hot as it smokes up the engine bay and smells of oil. It seems to be coming from the turbo side of the engine. What I have worked out, is that it only seems to leak under load - It could sit and idle forever and not leak, but take her around the block and she stinks!

I have recently replaced both rocker cover gaskets (as they were rock solid and pissing oil everywhere) and I had hoped this was the cause. Unfortunately not.

Any help/guesses/suggestions would be amazing guys!

Also, upon replacing rocker cover gaskets - what a pain in the ass that was (backyard mechanic over here lol), she now seems to miss upon acceleration. At idle, smooth as, revving in park smooth as but as soon as i drive it feels like its bogging down/missing. I have checked all vacuum lines and connectors and I have put back everything seemingly correctly. (most things will only fit in one spot!). Im stumped! Maybe I should study mechanics so I dont have these problems hahah! :( All learning I suppose!

Any advice greatly appreciated! Cant wait to get this badboy on the road!

Corey

Hey mate, thanks for the reply! Ah I had that problem initially but its in 100% now! No leaks at all from rocker cover. I'm thinking might be old oil stuck between heat shield and exhaust still burning off...

Might be worth a thorough degrease if you haven't already done it; this will also help you trace a potential leak if the burning smell continues.

Hopefully you've got it sorted.

Could be crank or cam sensors, it can be hard to fault find these without a consult reader and a few spare parts... I assume the plugs have been changed?

If you still have an oil leak and it still smells after a drive, there are a few other things to check, the cam sensor Orings can leak, and the dipstick can blow oil out if it isn't in properly, or the seal is damaged. Both these will cause oil to burn on the manifold.

I didn't change the plugs, however it ran perfectly fine before?

I would have at least checked one while I was in there, otherwise you may need to do the whole job again just to change the plugs.

Can you remove one and check the gap?

I did check one, seemed worn but I didn't have the time to get a set soi just put it all back. I assumed it ran fine before so? Ehhh :(

Engine light has now decided to come on, maybe that's a good sign as I can get it scanned...

Hey Scotty,

Oil smell cleared up - seems it was just some old oil on the exhaust :)

As for the rough running - don't know how i didn't spot this before, but found this badboy snapped off today!

(Sorry, couldn't work out how to wack a pic on here)

The snapped off bit comes from a line that hits a t-piece then goes off to what looks like somewhere near the turbo, and the other way goes to the piping from the intercooler close to the throttle body. The small line you can see goes to the piping just after the airbox. Obviously the line was just hanging loose and i didn't notice! Could this be why shes running terribly?

Cheers :)

Ahh, wasnt even sure what that sensor was for!!

I did unplug some. I thought if I had put one in wrong, it would miss terribly even at idle? It seemed pretty obvious which was which as the length and position of the cables went to the right place. But maybe not. I feel like an idiot haha! :(

Ill kick myself when I work out what dumb mistake I have made!

As for getting it scanned, it was just pulling a code because I had started it without the AFM plug attached, and stayed on even when i plugged back in. Got it cleared, and its stayed off.
