What Have You Done To Your Stagea Lately?
Beregron replied to Hanso's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
Umm.. my mechanic mate said it just requires some adjustment of some sorts (excuse my lack of knowledge). Not a shearing sound at all. From memory we put a lightened flywheel in to suit the exeedy clutch. -

Lads, Ok a quick drive but i didnt take any photo's as it doesnt look any different to last week, it wasn't on the hoist and its waaaay too damn hot in Adelaide (42 degrees) Scotty, The jobs left to do are reverse light, hand brake, a few engine bay trims and something to do with the push rod or clutch or some such as it's making a tiny noise when fully engaged... yep i have no idea what that's about. Now... please keep in mind i haven't driven a manual in many years so the first few minutes i was getting those normal skills back but under normal driving it was great. Nice and smooth, the pressure / clutch point seemed a bit high but after a few minutes i was use to it. The gaps really started to show when you gave the car a bit and until i get it on a dyno i guess not much can be answered but i assume it has a lot to do with the SS2 Hypergear and the original tune of the emanage but it's quite laggy. I don't have the brake cut mod (which i don't know if thats still relevant without the auto now??) and while i gave a couple or squirts from stationery it still seemed a bit hesitant to make boost until 3500-4000+. Once on boost yes things were good and the car does feel lighter than i remember. Despite this thanks to the manual it felt a lot more spritely overall. Not a whole lot i could discover in the short time i went for a drive but once i get the chance i'll get it in to have the tune looked at. I may be getting a head of myself but i'm thinking of moving my immediate attention from the Emanage / Link decisions and looking at turbo choices and see what i can get the emanage to do with whatever turbo i use. Again this is all pending on what the current set up is doing once a competent tuner can have a look at it. I have to say though.... so freaking awesome driving my car as a manual. If not for the heat i would have stayed longer but it's stupidly hot here. I'll have to try and take some video footage (maybe buy myself a go-pro for xmas) to share the joy. If i am able to have the car back for the xmas break expect a lot of info, photo's etc etc and i'm happy to answer any questions. My end hopes are as this is my daily / family car to eliminate a heap of the lag and have a solid boost curve that can be used day to day. I think some of you blokes are saving me a lot of the hassel with all this turbo talk at present. Oh and i will want a set of Work Meister 3p in white with polished lip -

Minor update for me and photo's to follow tomorrow as I have the day off... Tail Shaft for my M35 sorted so the obvious thing to do was for the mechanic to take it for a drive and see how it plays with the 350z 6sp, stock ECU with emanage in place. All reports are that it drove fine, still came on boost no probs and besides the 4wd light being on there was no signs of limp mode or any issues which is pretty cool. Our initial thought that the manual shifter might slightly rub on the centre console mount is apparently a non issue as all gears engage with zero rubbing. I'm going to hopefully take it for a quick spin tomorrow with the only outstanding job now being the handbrake. Like i said, i'll take a few pictures tomorrow but won't spend a heap of time with the car so as not to get in the way... that and it's too damn hot in Adelaide at the moment -

Ok so as promised.... I had more time to spare to go check out the M35 as we get closer to the end of this long job, I managed to take a few happy snaps of a few bits. Clutch pedal is sorted. Manual box in place Centre console test fitted Tail Shaft not in yet... But the best bit is.... IT STARTS!!! The 4wd light is on + the auto light flashes a few times on start up but it stars perfectly and idles fine. Next the hand brake will be sorted + clutch line and then all i am waiting on is the tail shaft which i was hoping to be done before this week ends but looks like next week. There are heaps more photo's that have been taken by the mechanic but they will sorted once all is done. -
I'm quickly losing hope that my M35 will be drivable for the xmas break More effort will be made to try and get it running with the 350z manual in place and just tricking the stock ECU that it's an auto box is in neutral... I'll be there tomorrow afternoon so i will try and take some pictures as i didn't get a chance last weekend I have a feeling once the chaos of xmas is over i'll be asking Scotty and Rick a tonne of questions

This excites me considerably

Got to take a look at my M35 tonight. Something very cool about being under the hoist looking at the manual box in place. It looks kinda bare now with all the AWD bits and auto missing New radiator on, 6pd box in place, braided lines and wiring to be sorted tomorrow or late tonight i assume. All things pointing towards trying to turn the key hopefully this week. Tail shaft however probably won't be in till early / mid next week which is fine as other jobs are still needed (centre console / handbrake etc) -
R35 GTR seats in mine. Mostly for the lower seating position but as others have said also because you sit on the M35 seats... you sit in these.

I don't have a build thread yet and to be honest i'm not sure i'll do one. Maybe. Still lots to work through till i'm happy with the car which is mainly to do with tuning and i keep missing out of good sets of Work Meisters on gumtree (i assume i'll just have to buy new form Japan). I'm using a 350z box Custom Tail shaft using the ends from a 350z from memory (this will hopefully be done by the weeks end) 350z Pedal box however the clutch pedal needs modifying (also should be sorted by weeks end) Clutch and flywheel to suit the 350z box (from memory i went with an Xeedy item but i'd have to check as i'm not at home where all the info is) Things to note... Due to starter motor issues everyone is mentioning is you have the option of mounting either side when using 350z/V35 box / sump. If you use a Starter from a LHD Infiniti (i had to buy one from the States obviously) it will bolt up perfectly on the drivers side as there will be no room in the standard position due to turbo clearance. I'm really going to have to reach out to others and my local tuner for options once all is sorted. In the end this will only be my daily wagon but i want to something manual and really fun to drive with enough power to play with. Looking at recent threads re: turbo options i have a feeling i'll be revisiting turbo selection in the new year too. I should also save a fair bit of weight through this whole exercise too thanks to going RWD manual More info to come more than likely next week Hope this helps.

I have nothing to add if people intend on staying AWD but i'm hoping that by this time next week my M35 will be for all intent purposes 6sp manual rwd. Few tricks along the way but it seems to be nearing the end. If it will even start and not throw error codes that prevent me from driving it is a totally different question that won't be answered until the next few days

nice heat shield -
Cheers for the info Scotty. I'll let people know how i go starting the M35 once everything is bolted together. Hopefully the error codes wont prevent me driving it with the current set up. Then I will have the luxury of more time to investigate a real tuning solution.
-
Bumping this thread as my M35 should be ready for tuning very soon. Currently stock ECU with Emanage piggy backed making just over 240+kw on pump 98. The car will soon, hopefully, still have the same mods / tune however the auto will be missing (manual yay!) I assume error codes will appear due to no auto and i do wonder how drivable the car will be with said error codes if at all. If anything it will be an interesting day. I'm still unsure what path to take to get the car tuned and running fine with the manual in place... Thoughts? I wondered how the blokes using Link units are travelling with their tuning. Cheers

Taking a punt and ordering a Starter Motor for a 2003 LHD Infiniti from the US... It mounts on the drivers side as oppose to the passengers so i am hoping it will work out for the manual conversion. The measurements look ok Also measurements will be taken to get the tail shaft made up and then hopefully once the starter is on it will be a case of bolting everything back together with the 6sp from the 350z in place. Clutch pedal still needs to be sorted and i havent even looked at centre console but i am hoping these are fairly straight forward. Then will start the ECU head aches:p (it's totally gonna be worth it) -
As far as i have come with my Manual conversion i can say Tail Shaft, ECU stuff and Clutch pedal won't be a straight swap. You will also have to get creative with the starter motor... I havent gotten as far as the centre console yet however i don't see that being a huge problem.
-
Depending on how my M35 feels power wise once my M35 manual conversion is done (stupid start motor issues slowing me down) I might look at what to do with the turbo... Mind you i still have all the ECU issues to go through once the manual box is in place. I have a SS2 Hypergear unit in at present with a Greddy EMU so i have no idea what kind of results i'll see with a standalone ECU in place. All this information is very interesting to me though.

Whilst my M35 is on the hoist might as well replace things that need it... Therefore upon closer inspection the radiator will be replaced... won't have to worry about the auto transcooler getting in the way with the new one -
Pretty much this but hopefully my M35 will do the job once it's manual

It's great seeing progress. Still issues to overcome and i'm hoping as everything comes together others might have some progress on their tuning endeavours -

My M35 on the hoist.... Slowly working through the problems of adding 6sp RWD box from a 350z (which means i'll have a transgo fitted auto box for sale shortly) -
I imagine i'll be starting mine next month at the earliest. I can't see the 350z 6 speed being fitted and ready to go any earlier. I haven't made the decision on what engine management i'll be using but i'm keen as always to see how Scotty goes.
