having owned more than 10 GTRs now with standard turbos, GTSS turbos, HKS 2530s, single turbos and N1 turbos, some with stock cams, one with HKS cams, one with midori cams, two with pon-cams I think I have a pretty good feel for them. my advice again. for your car, with your turbos your best bang for buck option is getting some cam gears put in and tuned (along with any changes needed in the ecu). it will give you 20kw or so in the area I mentioned above which will help with punch out of corners and won't cost you any top end power (in fact you may even gain 10kw or so). that is about the best compromise you are going to get. also, you don't need the head off to change cams so honest it makes no difference if you do them now or a year from now. just do the cam gears get it tuned and see how that goes. bigger cams are going to rob you of power somewhere and give you some somewhere else. that is all they can do really. my current GTR is a jun 2.7 with 2530s, tomei pon-cams and a motec etc. it's surprisingly torquey and very fat in the midrange but this could be down to the tune or even the stroker (even though it's only a small change in stroke). they suit the car quite well and I'm pretty happy with it's set-up, but for your current standard engine with GTSS I think starting with the cam gears is the way to go. on top of all that it's not wasted money. even if you do go cams in the future you can still use your cam gears with the new cams. there is basically no good reason NOT to do it this way.

well they are not quite as good as you might think. looking at the first one yes it flows 325L/ph but only at 40psi. BASE fuel pressure in a skyline is 3bar = 43.5psi. add the average 20psi boost to that and you get 63psi, call it 65psi. at 65psi it flows approximately 275L/ph and note that's at 13.5V. at 12V (which most pumps get if lucky) it will be quite a bit less. that is less flow than a nismo drop in pump which have been found to easily flow their rated 276L/ph even at 12V and with normal operating pressure around 60psi. 275L/ph is enough to supply only 750cci injectors safely. so the first pump is good for 750cc injectors or around 700hp. the deatchwerks pump is about the same. at 13.5V (again a bit optimistic for most cars) and 65psi it flows something like 270L/ph. again enough to supply 700-750cc injectors and support around 750hp. if you're going to use one you need to either test what voltage your pump supply is getting, and if not enough you'll need to do a direct power feed to the pump to get it some more juice. anyway, they look ok overall i guess and are built to a price. still for piece of mind in my own car if I needed to supply some 700cc injectors there is only 1 pump choice for me. nismo (or sard/tomei they are the same). the 3 year warranty is nice on the deatchwerks pump and aeromotive do make good products but for a skyline with solid, reliable bolt in options like nismo that is what I chose.

yeah agree with that a nice 20 at 10,000rpm should be a nice note. if you really want to do it and want it to live then you'll need: solid lifter conversion upgraded valve springs (for 10Krpm I would go double valve springs) titanium retainers consider new lighter valves too (helps a lot with high RPM) new valve guides (of course) and with that kind of RPM I'd be looking at some cams that will breathe effectively you'll also need a turbo to match it as there is no point revving to 10,000rpm when your turbo is out of puff at 7,000rpm. something like a TD06 25G with an 8cm or even 10cm housing would be the go. all this gear will mean it will be a bit of a pig under 5,000rpm as all these mods just shift the powerband higher up the rev range, but if you're adding 2,000rpm to the redline I guess loosing 2,000rpm of response is the price you'll have to pay. yes you'll want to get the bottom end properly balanced too and will be even better if you can get some light-ish pistons and rods and piston speeds increase a fair whack from 7,500rpm to your 10,000rpm goal. you can do it and it'll be kind of cool, but it's not a wise way to spend money on your car. you can buy a good condition RB26 long motor with most bits needed for around $4-$4.5K. and it'll get you 200rwkw standard, with some boost and good exhaust and a tune it'll give you 250rwkw still with basically all standard bits. and will be a nice streetable package. plus it'll rev to 8,000 out of the box.

my sincere apologies! I may have had one of australias top drag racers confused with some other bloke. hmm, let me just do a quick edit here... funnily enough do a google on jim read and wsid and you get bits like this (take from the first result): "THE Greens have called on the corporate watchdog on to examine the financial viability of the Sydney Dragway amid allegations of favouritism by the chairman of the board. Australian drag-racing legend Jim Read has headed the board of Western Sydney International Dragway at Eastern Creek since it opened in 2004, after the NSW government paid $30 million of taxpayers' money to build it. He strongly denies any wrongdoing. His wife Denise runs all the merchandising at the dragway and is responsible for sponsors' signage and logos - exactly the same sponsors she deals with in her similar role with her husband's Jim Read Racing team. One of the drivers of that team is Mr Read's son, Phil Read, whose plumbing firm provides much of the maintenance for plumbing work at the dragway. In the past his stepdaughter Monique has operated the public address system, stepdaughter Melissa has sold programs, son Luke has done maintenance and nephew Michael Ryan lived in a flat at the site to provide security. A former director and accountant of the WSID, Ian Seckold, said: ''The joke at the track was that if your name wasn't Read you couldn't get a job here." - SMH Another choice passage from the article gives you an idea of how read see's himself: Mr Read has just returned from America where he was inducted into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Florida. He denies any suggestion of wrongdoing. ''This place wouldn't exist without me,'' he said. The last financial return filed by the dragway, again for the year ending June 2008, showed that Mr Read collected a salary package worth a total of almost $160,000. ''I am the one who didn't go to work for seven years to get the place built,'' he said. ''There was no one else except my wife, she gave up seven years of her life to set up this place.'' boohoo, poor read on only $160K for a very cruzy job, and that package doesn't include any 'fringe benefits' either I'll bet. His salary wasn't enough so the board gave him an unsecured loan of $200K. and who is on the board? jims race team crew cheif, another mate (dept mayor of liverpool) and the blokes wife. not bad that in a year where they received only $220K in grants they loaned $200K of it to Jim. "One of the directors on the WSID board, which two years ago approved an almost $200,000 unsecured loan to Mr Read, is Robert Cavagnino, who is also the crew chief of one of Mr Read's racing teams. Also on the board is former NSW Labor Party staffer and deputy mayor of Liverpool Tony Beuk and his ex-wife Diane. Mr Beuk used his Labor connections to lobby for the government to build the raceway. Ms Hale said: ''It rings alarm bells to learn that an employee of the Labor Party heads up a public company that receives ongoing government funding for the construction and operation of the dragway. ''WSID's manager, Tony Beuk, is still listed on the Labor Party's website as an employee of the NSW branch of the ALP." Mr Beuk signed off the last financial reports for the not-for-profit organisation. The latest, for the year ending June 2008, shows that the dragway made a loss of $758,153. It also received a grant of $225,296 and at the same time loaned Mr Read $190,887." I would love to know how that place runs at a nearly $800,000 loss when it charges such exorbitant prices for hire, claims that it's hire days are nearly all fully booked months in advance, it also receives grants and yet it still pisses away $800K of tax payers money. I would have thought 30mil to lay down 2 500meter strips of tarmac and a carpark and some buildings was more than ample. apparently not.

lol. I do not recommend sampling the local "culture" unless you actually WANT to have your dick fall off or conversely lose your "other" virginity (marlin is the exception he lost his a looooong time ago). keep off the great western highway after dark! and if you're driving a long it and see someone on the side of the road for gods sake don't slow down, they can pounce on slow moving cars. -
yeah around $20K-$25K is on the money Dom. maybe stick it in the middle, $22,500 or even $23K for some wiggle room.

Has It Been Done? Single Cam Rb30 In Skyline
Beer Baron replied to obsesv's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
why? an RB25 is superior in every way and I'd even argue an RB20 over a single cam 30. or if you already have a 32 or 33 GTST why not just do what everyone else does and use your 20 or 25 head on the 30 block? much better option. -

yeah it's neat and clean but nothing flash, but you are in the western subburbds of sydney after all so given it's surroundings it might be mistaken as the taj mahal. bar is good, but not exactly cheap (are any hotel bars?). bottle shop nearby though... -
Bnr34 Revamp
Beer Baron replied to Mckhenry's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
seibon stuff is not bad. but i haven't personally used their 34 gear. I bought the sunline guards that we put on berry's R34 and they were perfect. fit and hang just like a factory guard. amazing quality. they do FRP guards too which are quite a bit cheaper than carbon. the kagotani bar we used on that car fitted perfectly too. the nismo stuff of course has the best fit. basically oem quality but is very expensive. -
A Boy's Love For His Rb20
Beer Baron replied to Roy's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
i just don't trust skinny people anyway. they will likely steal your food or your woman when you're not looking. or in marlins case your brother... -
hey mate, 1:49 is quick. some people loose a bit of perspective at events like SL. so many of the cars there have been developed over YEARS and with drivers who have been driving those cars and EC for years too so their times are usually a bit quicker than average that's for sure. anything under 20min for a road car is good (depending on the car of course) and for a track car under a 50 is well on the way to getting quick. best of luck on the 46, I'm sure it will get there.
-
if you want to improve mid range and response with your GTSS turbos my advice is stick with stock cams but adjust the cam gears to get them coming on a little harder in the 3,500-5,500rpm range. should be able to gain 20kw or more in that range without losing any peak power.

Mitsi Evo 1-3 Intercooler
Beer Baron replied to senilykSkylines's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
standard GTR intercooler is no real restriction at 300kw and plenty have been used with even more. once you get to 350kw or so it's a bit debatable as to whether or not they are a hindrance but certainly they are fine up to 300kw. -
Your Air Flow Management System Poll
Beer Baron replied to SargeRX8's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
meh, I run map sensor with a motec ecu in one GTR. the other GTR runs twin AFMs with trust hard pipe kit, the silvia runs Z32 AFM on a alluminium intake pipe to the turbo. all set-ups work fine. I honestly don't really have a prefference for one or the other, but I will say most tuners seem to be able to more consistently get better results with AFMs. I've seen so many map sensor cars running poorly it's not funny. -
for the fuel pump forget the walbro or 044. buy a nismo/sard/tomei drop in 276L/ph pump. they support 700cc injectors and bolt in with no hassles. worth every penny.
-
nothing wrong with the FvonVpro. they are a good ecu. as you've found the real problem is lack of support here in aus. I don't think $1500 is unreasonable for a full tune and I'm sure if in future you needed some changes it won't be $1500 again. sadly due to the lack of support here they are not worth much second hand. you'd do well to even get $500 for it, most i've seen go around the $300 mark as people just don't like buying an unknown quantity. in your case since it's in the car, wired up, and running and you have 1 tuner you can use I would stick with it, get it tuned and enjoy.

yeah I agree dunc. it's bullshit. we need a new oran park somewhere. pouring more money into EC is not the answer and the new layouts don't really inspire me at all. I'd much rather leave EC as it is (there's nothing really wrong with it) and plough the money into something new. it's sad to look back 30 years to see what tracks we had then to what we have now.
-
duncans got some rippers and fatz effort going to wakefield is pretty mega. even better when he smashed the poor silvia into the wall the next day... I have grazed the odd post here and there and bent the odd number plate but nothing really catastrophic. I have had a close call using a mates hoist (duncans car sliding off the ramps in the rain reminded me of this one). using a mates hoist and didn't realise this particular hoist (normal 2 post) you had to unlock the near side post separately from the far side one (no idea why they have that). so I hit the down button to let it down and it only let one side down. lucky I stopped it quick as car was very nearly falling off (was about 7feet up). that would have been nasty. Things always seem to happy at the end of a track day when you're tired and a bit buzzed out. i've done it reversing the old GTR into the tight garage at my parents old house. you had to enter on quite an angle and straight it up in the garage with bugger all room. I was tired and had the windows down as I was listening for any un-usual noises and I had smelt gearbox oil so I was sniffing and listening for anything out of the ordinary. started backing it in (car is super loud, no mufflers of any kind) and didn't notice I was dragging the passenger side door and quarter along the wooden post in the door opening. I felt a bit of resistance and thought it was just the LSD binding up (as it does) or a bit of gravel or a lip in the concrete. d'oh! was not too bad though, just a scratch really.

can someone just sign me up and put me down for webber P1 X how ever many races there are this year? I'm predicting a clean sweep for the young buck.

yes, and maybe wrap your subwoofer amp in that carbon fibre looking vinyl to make it lighter too. in fact do two coats to make it super light. -
awesome. any GTR running in the 7s is a bloody big effort. well done again guys.
