Wakie Track Day Wrap-Up Thread - 5 March 2011
Beer Baron replied to GoldZilla's topic in New South Wales
fatz you monkey. how on earth did you convince 3400 people to give you a dollar. or was it 1700 people at $2. lol. nice one mate. I might even give you a buck to send you on your way. any word on the shitbox you plan to run? -
A Boy's Love For His Rb20
Beer Baron replied to Roy's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
lol, you are still a handsome, strapping young man in my eyes bris. that 110kg is mostly in your massive wanger and maybe your brains and muscle for the rest. If I was a hot young chick I'd be all over you like a rash. now back to work slacker!!! -
yeah 2,000kms to run in before power tune is a waste of about 1,800kms in my opinion. but given I didn't build your engine you did the right thing in taking their advice. also I dunno what's wrong with running in the engine on the dyno? it's fantastic. you don't have to go anywere, you can vary load and speed as you like. no time spent at red lights etc idling. no time spent on long constant speed and rpm sections of road, can run up to whatever speed you like, and since you are not driving you can keep a much better eye on the car temps etc. it's the best way to run it in in my opinion. but would get a bit expensive if you wanted to do 2,000kms of it!

Power Steering Or Not?
Beer Baron replied to Plan-FAILURE's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
yeah try a wrecker if you want to do it cheap. pinch an auto trans cooler from something, or even a motorbike oil cooler will work. get one with barbed ends if you can. makes it easy to fit. otherwise there are plenty of cores getting around new. from cheap basic ones to mega $$$ ARC ones. it doesn't need to be huge either. small ones make a big difference. -
possibly but in practice it's a complete non-issue. every decent aftermarket radiator is twin or triple pass. it's why they work well. it's the cheap shit single pass chinese ones that perform worse than standard that suck. all the good ones like koyo, PWR etc make twin and triple pass for GTRs.

yeah that's about right. I was going to say around $700-$800 a day. as above only way to protect it would be to maybe figure out a way to lock VDC to on (maybe remove or shield the switch?). maybe some kind of data logger with clear rules about car usage?
-
yeah for sure. flood damage definitely doesn't cure itself over time! it gets worse if un-discovered and un-treated. thanks angus smart, would be curious to see what it sells for.

cowboy. I just read the vic link you posted. it says: If no response is received on the initial request, an infringement notice for the traffic offence will be sent to the corporation. In addition, an infringement notice will also be issued to the corporation for the offence of 'Company Failing to Disclose Identity of Driver'. The penalty amount for this offence is 6 penalty units or $717.00 (as at 1 July 2010). they don't spell it out as of course they don't want to encourage people doing it. but what that says to me is that if your company sends in the notice with 'cannot identify driver' or just does nothing the CORPORATION will get the infringement notice for the offence (ie they will have to pay whatever the fine was), PLUS they will have to pay $717 for failing to nominate. that's it. no director of officer of the company will loose points. as duncan stated a corporation cannot have a drivers licence but they can own and register a car. this is basically the same system as nsw. and I know the system here as like duncan I've had to use it when company cars have been pinged. NSW doesn't spell it out either as they don't want people abusing it.

R34 AWD system doesn't care about offset either but like all GTRs they need as much front grip as possible. more front track gives you some more grip so most run same offset front and rear. there is no point having your wheels stick further out in the rear just cause it looks cool. all it does is make the car handle poorly.

it can be fixed. the keyway just locates the balancer. it doesn't actually turn it, that's done with the force of the bolt holding it on (just like wheel studs don't turn your wheels the hub face does). they get damaged when balencers come loose, without the bolt then the key is turning the damper and it just gets bashed to bits. not many people are willing to repair them but herman at envy imports in sydney can do them. i've seen him do a few and all the one I know of are still living a happy life. talk to him about cost for repair and then figure out if it's worth doing vs a new crank. Jez: he could probably fix your truck one too.

cool! glad to see it's up and running. look forward to seeing what you think.

6Boost Rb26Dettt Manifold Install
Beer Baron replied to BoostdR's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
like this stuff. pic if of my old GTR set-up. the boys added heaps of the stuff for me to protect hoses etc. I was running HKS turbos on tomei mani's with tomei dumps. plus you can see even with the tomei manis and dumps the front turbo dump is VERY close to the rear turbo compressor inlet. I used the trust piping kit which is nice as the rear inlet is cast and then also had the dump pipe wrapped to help. here's the hard pipe kit I used. it's my favourite (have used it and the HKS one like yours) but unfortunately I don't think it would work with your mani's and with the RB30 it would all end up too high. -
6Boost Rb26Dettt Manifold Install
Beer Baron replied to BoostdR's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
yeah just lay a piece of heat reflective material over the silicone joiner that is close to the mani. that will protect it. the mani's look very nice mate. hope they give some good gains. I think they will. -
What Highflow Cats Are Legal
Beer Baron replied to eightsixboy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
your not serious are you? did you try http://www.metalcat.com.au/ lol. -
no visible negative effects. plenty of GTRs running around with twin pass or tripple pass ("Z flow") radiators. I have never noticed any premature pump failure etc. i mean it's still moving the same volume of water, all that's happened is you've effectively increased the length of the coolant passage.

Vq35hr Conversion
Beer Baron replied to T04GTR's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
awesome idea dave. I love it. would be interesting to see the total cost of a VQ35 conversion vs a big $$ RB30/32/34 build up? plus for anyone who starts with a good condition RB26 they can sell that for an easy $4k+. then it's just a matter of engine, the AWD sump (with suitable diff). make new bellhousing for a getrag 6 speed, or run the 5 speed with a weld on, or run the hollinger like you said with the right bellhousing ordered from hollinger. 800hp VQ35 in a 32 GTR with a hollinger would be a piece of gear!! now make it happen! -
nope, kit includes only crank, rods, pistons, pins, pin locks and ring set. you still need big end bearings, main bearings and all the other usual rebuild bits like VRS kit (all the top end gaskets basically inc head gasket), oil and water pumps, tensioner, idler bearing, timing belt etc. labour on the install cost will vary heaps. best to talk to some engine builders and ask them for a quote. it's a very good kit for the money. HKS rods and pistons are both very nice. should be a sweet engine if built nicely.

yeah pretty fair post from Greg, except perhaps the part about eric being able to avoid the accident. he might have seen the car coming and decided to speed and at the same moment richard decides to dive in front and they still would have hit. same goes for reasonable speed. he was well down the pit exit and at that point it's pretty fair to expect him to be exiting at a low rate of speed. no one wants to turn up at the 40km/h pit entrance and have to stand on the anchors and lock the thing up trying to slow down. he was not pulling in for a craig lowndes style pit stop after all... But just to reiterate my own motorsport experience. you enter the track, you sign the waiver, you accept responsibility for your own vehicle. i've seen accidents that were far worse than this one (both in damage caused and in how they were caused) and I've NEVER heard of a driver offering to pay for another drivers car. it's just the way it is. i've run a porsche gt3 with 2 friends of mine for a couple of years and one weekend he got hit up the ass 3 times and a cost of $6,000 for each carbon kevlar rear bumper. in the end the porsche centre ran out and sold us a used one for a bargain $4,000... imagine how he felt! he had clowns hitting up the back passage and one clown t-boned him and fked his door and sill panel (don't even ask what they cost) and that was in a practice - non-timed) session for gods sake! no one came round with a 'sorry mate' or an offer to pay. we just took it on the chin and kept going. unfortunately people sometimes drive poorly on the track and sometimes they'll end up on top of you. it's a risk we take when entering any event on a closed circuit. but if you think it's bad you should see tourist sessions at the nurburgring! last day I was there were 2 fatalities and more accidents than I could count. I've also seen some horrible single car accidents that were just shit luck. one cost a mate of mine around $120,000... nasty. luckily you were not badly hurt which is the main thing. hopefully with help from our club you can get the car going again and get back out there.

R34 GT-Four RB26 Time Attack Build
Beer Baron replied to Luke_ENR34's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
mate, car is coming along very nicely. great choice of bits too. it will be a weapon when finished. -
great choice of car mate. I have a big soft spot for the SW20 MR2s. they have a punchy 2L engine, great packaging and styling and good fun to drive. also start with pretty low kerb weight and faily good balance. 1:46 is a great time at EC. best of luck. what kind of time did it run at EC last year?

nice engine build. I would definitely be looking at upgrading the suspension. it has lots of movement under power (to be expected with that much) but it also moves around a lot more than it should under brakes. if it's still got the stock gear in it there is a good chance it's stuffed by now. no need to go nuts but some upgraded shocks and springs will do wonders for it.
