Err, the reason all diesels have direct injection right now is same reason why they've all always had direct injection from the very start. Its how they work. I'm assuming you meant petrol there?

I'd say it isn't all bad. Half the stuff needed for better turbos in the last 2 decades (eg, better materials, bearings, manufacturing methods) have all been developed regardless of them being in F1, for numerous other reasons. If i wasn't lazy i'd find a link to some popular mechanics article in the 80's where some big designers in the major automakers said that they didn't think turbocharging was anything more than a fad. They also said that 2 stroke auto engines were also a fad, which turned out ot be true however. (magazines are on google books incase people are interested. even the ones from the 1930's)

Not to mention that, unless you have a fetish for non turbo RB engines (if so. get help), a turbo car with non tubro engine is still a turbo car as far as the laws is concerned. So yes, keep looking for a non turbo one. That being said, if you found a non turbo car that had been converted to a turbo one, you could legally remove the turbo and put normal minfolds back on and drive it legall, as far as i can tell.

Seagate went through a bad batch early last year but I've not heard anything bad about them in the last 6-9 months. Warranty was average though, mate of mine who tried to return one was told to download a error detecting utility to detect a fault, that couldn't do so because it couldn't read the drive.
