If its at the rear its probably comimg from the 1/2 moons , did you change them ?

the oil was leaking from the back. where can i get the half moon rubber seals from? would they sell them at nissan? if so anyone know the Serial number for that part?

cheers

bill

Curious to know where this comes from:

rocket covers

As has been pointed out, it is actually rocker cover (probably more correctly 'cam cover' in this case as there arn't any actual rockers).

Anyway, only the rear 'half moon' seals require some sealant at installation. The rocker cover gasket requires none - just make sure it is 'square' in the groove of the rocker cover (no twists, etc).

It comes from the old cars that use to have rockers .

You dont need any sealant on the rubber that goes in the groove , they never leak , most times you can even reuse them and they dont leak if installed correct.

If you think they are hard to seal, how would you go with old cork gaskets ?

'rocker' does, 'rocket' doesn't AFAIC (and I've been around 'a while')

If your saying the half-moon seals don't require sealant I disagree.....and so does Nissan. OTOH, the rocker cover gaskets themselves don't need any sealant

[sigh] I don't think the are hard to seal at all. As for cork.....come back and talk to me when you've worked on a veteran car......

steveL ,

I meant you dont need sealant on the rubber gasket but as i said earlier i use some on the half moons where they mate with the cil head case .

I have worked on some old cars in my time, i have been around for a while and i owned a very quick EH Holden many moons ago .

I had a quick VK...whats ya point...

And yes I agree with the above, re the sealant only on the half moons, use that orange stuff (name evades me at this moment).

Also when tightening the covers bolts/screws to them in a similar fashion as you would putting a head on, that is night tighten them around in a circle, and fully tighten first go, this will ensure that the mating surfaces are meeting square!!!

  • 6 months later...

Just replaced the right cam cover gasket, the rubber washers and the 'D' seal for the first time and all I used was $10 silastic from Autobarn only on the top and bottom of the 'D' seal and tightened the screws till the washers started to 'balloon' slightly. Been 4 weeks and so far so good.

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
