Just to let you guys know we picked up 40awkw on a 420awkw WRX in changine from 99 coil pack system running dumb ignitor with autronic dwell control using a 0.6mm gap to using full CDI igntion with proper coils and 0.9mm gap!!! Mind you it was braking down slightly before hand but the results were throughout the rev range.

hahaha.. that's what my R31 was like. You could even give it a polish and it would drive like a new car for 2 days. I think it was just my mind playing tricks on me :)

A bit like the do an oil change and it feels faster or smoother syndrome. :)

no way .. that works

i lose 50km a tank if i use the oil too long in my run around lancer Gli

change it and i instantly (next tank) get that 50km back

Hey just out of curiousity, my tuner replaced my copper plugs with Iridium NGKs and all of a sudden i'm getting huge misfire around 5000rpm (at 0.8 bar) Nothing else has been changed as far as I know. Does it sound like they're 1.1mm gapped and I just need to change it to 0.8?

Gread thread by the way, very helpful to a newbie like myself.

crazy dude why pay to retune a car that already had a $500 tune?

secondly GTT's hate iridiums thats why the car had coppers in it.

put coppers back in and gap to .8

Im using NGK IRIDIUM BKR5EIX-11, so i guess that means that they are heat range 5 and have a gap of 1.1mm, is this heat range ok (mods at the moment are hks catback and decat pipe)???

The reason i ask is because at the moment my car seems to hesitate randomly down low sometimes (usualy in 2nd and 3rd gear) and feels a bit sluggish down low aswell (goes fine at 100% throttle in every gear). And sometimes has a very quiet pop out the exhaust.

Do you reccomend i keep the plugs i am using now and gap them down to 0.8mm? or go and buy a different heat range plug and gap that down to 0.8mm??

I would really appreciate some help as its getting a bit frustrating lol

By the way someone should sticky this thread!! it will come in handy for alot of people im sure :(

Cheers

How does your plugs look now? If it looks white like the picture in the link, then you have overheated plugs. NGK

If not, then gap down by tapping lightly to 0.9mm or lower (use feeler gauge to measure). See if it helps. Iridium plugs normally perform better then normal copper plugs due to hotter kernel flame & lower voltage required to jump the gap.

Cheers for the reply mate, i will check if the plugs are overheating when i have some spare time

It says on the iridium box "Do not adjust spark gap due to extremly fine center electrode", i just tried gapping down a used set of iridium spark plugs and when you insert the feeler gauge (after they have been gapped down) to check if the gap is correct then remove the feeler gauge it bends the center electrode and because its so fine the electrode sometimes snapps off!

So i dont exactly want to risk trying to gap down $80 worth of ngk iridium plugs to find that the electrodes snapp off.

The correct way to gap a iridium.

Iridium gapping

I have a few questions that have not been covered yet.

Have a look at the plugs pictured below and you will notice that the plugs are different lengths from the plug seat (top ot the thread where they sit in the head) to the top of the pin that the coilpack connects to.

100_1301.jpg

The height difference is approx 5mm.

The plugs that came in my R32 were BPR5EIX and were longer than the BCPR6EY-11. I gapped them down to 0.8.

The first thing I noticed is when you sit the coil on the new plug it only just compresses the spring at the top of the coil it is not a tight fit.

With the older plugs the top of the coil would actually click in and hold the top of plug like an octopus tenticle.

I have also tried BCPR6E and have found the same thing.

I have chronic missfire if I run over 14psi even with the BCPR6E. and believe it or not with the BPR5EIX-11 platinum plug gapped at 1.1 I have no miss untill 16psi.

does the plug height make a difference and has anyone else noticed this?

I have splitfires coming very soon and will not change the plugs as they are only 2000k's old and are BCPR6E and see if the coils alone fix the miss.

Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
