My order of likely destructive events would be:

lack of oil to big end bearings due to pick-up sucking air on the track

detonation damaging pistons due to poor or over aggressive tuning

disintegration of ceramic compressor wheels due to overboosting stock terbs

impact damage when inexperienced or over confident driver fu(ks-up

Fairly obvious stuff when you think about it.

Hey guys, i have an 89 r32 gtr with a fresh rebuild...

what is the main cause of destruction of these engines as i dont want to rebuild it again any time soon.

Not so much oil pump but crank collar (on R32) or R33 crank to ensure positive engaugement to oil pump is also a must IMHO

That should have been done as part of the rebuild :D

If it wasnt then i'd question the persons knowledge of an RB motor.

yes you sure do. It sits on teh end of the crank where it engages the oil pump. The early 32s used about 3mm on the crank, the 33s and later used about 1cm. I fyou look at the wear on a 32 oil pump you will see it was not enough

Interesting about the collars! I never really knew that they were a neccecary upgrade but it makes very good sense now after reading the carl h Doc's!

the ceramic turbs dont sit right with me as they sound very different until warmed up to optimum temp, or well mine DO! and will be upgraded as soon as i decide on combo.... so for now its mellow crusing ...

one theory was burnt oil on turbo bearings ? Could someone please explain and why they sound so chirpy until used and temp is present in oil temp gauge or has anybody got the same noise's

its got me stuffed because the engine is a fresh build but now after study i think the turbos may not be.

basicly i dont want to pop them while there on the fresh engine.

the cars been adjusted to about 12psi but is rarley taken there and hi rev's kept to a minimum , maybe 8000 once a week for a play...

What will happen before these things die symtoms wise?.. (the ceramic turbos)

14 Psi boost used often ?

boost used when they are first engaged and sound chirpy like i explained before, as this can take 20 minutes sometimes ideling and still needs driving time to get oil temps around where the noise changes .

And the big question what happens if one goes as in follow on engine damage ?

never heard them make a noise like you describe. doesnt sound right to me.

BTW Gav is spot on with his reasons for RB26 failure, duncans one is pretty comon too, though i think dunc has experienced first hand the ones of Gavs list too! :P

Yeh my old GTS had a t4/t3 turbo and it made a different noise when it was cold compared to when it was warmed up.

And btw look out for stcok gtr clutches, they go pretty easy.

yes ... its odd, none of my other turbos have ever done it and i cant help thinking maybe something isnt flowing right until it is hot and thin causing bigger tolerence gaps in the bearings while cold ....

i will be relieved when there changed .....

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
