Bad News for Me

I am one pissed off gal right now!

Where do I start!

I bought my sick skyline in very early January from NSW, the car was unregistered at the time, however, had been previously registered with the RB25 so it was all legal, etc.

When the car got to Adelaide, Transport SA informed me an identity check was NOT sufficient and the car must there undergo an inspection for the modifications to the engine. I filled in all their forms, and they said I will hear from them in 2 and half weeks, ok almost 6 weeks after and 4 phone calls later, I finally get the paperwork. I book into regency for yesterday, which was a week and a half after I received the paperwork.

The paperwork states I need a certain size brake disc. So I ring regency, and ask them if my brakes will be a problem, explain to them the car has been registered before, is engineered in another state, and came out turbo so the brakes are sufficient, they assure me that this is fine.

I am driving around town all freaking day looking for an R32 air box, as I have an air pod and they are defectable, so I finally find one for $50 and bought a K&N filter to go in it because there was no air filter with it. So finally after a couple hours we get that to fit in the engine bay, I rip off the tint and I go to bed ready to face the next day.

Get up at 6 am, fill up all my fluids (water, windscreen wiper bottle, check oil, etc), then head down there in the pelting rain. Walk in, all is good. Pay my $65 and fill out more forms and wait to be called. Drive into the bay, the regency guys are friendly enough (surprise!) they start to check over everything.

They measure the brakes, and that is an automatic fail, they are not to size specified on paperwork. I explain I have already rang them and checked this previous, too bad, fight it out with the tech guy in motor reg next door. They check over mags, fail me on them because there are no markings to identify measurements. I thought there was such a thing as a ruler, but maybe I am just living in a fantasy world!

Walk into the rain with my failed report and pissed off fist, and walk into motor reg, argue with the tech guy, he doesn’t care, what more did I expect really! Go back to vehicle inspection; make another booking in order to get a temporary permit to drive. Go back to Motor Reg, ask to extend my permit, they will not do it. The permit ran out that day, I kindly asked them how they expected me to make modifications to vehicle as requested without freaking registration? That’s not their problem.

Leave Regency, air box is squashing air hose, car is doing bunny hopping movements whenever I go near boost. Go to see my mate at North Terrace Tyres, takes the tyres off, there are definitely no markings, must be a copy, so I take pictures and get him to right down measurements on business card.

Go to see Tilbrooks, speak to the head pimp, mark of course, inform him of my predicament, he informs me that I might have to go GTR brakes at the front to suit regency’s measurements, he doesn’t have any, JMS don’t have any, I will have to wait, of course I don’t mind cause I need to declare bankruptcy for when it comes time to pay for them.

Car is now sitting back in its hole, and I am back to playing the waiting game. Lucky I still haven’t sold my pulsar so I can burn around in that in the meantime, but what a waste, having my baby sitting in a shed in summer.

Sorry for the long long post, but I really had to get that off my chest lol.

Thats bullshit, the brakes on an R32 GTSt are the same spec as those off a twin turbo 3 litre 300ZX weighing 150kg more. They are absolutely IDENTICAL. Its overbraked as it is (unless you want to hit the track :))

The Perth tech section seems to be much easier to deal with than Adelaide's it seems.

Might have a spot of trouble if you're going to try and get 32 GTR brakes.

My b/f has been waiting for a set of brakes under warranty for his GTR from the car yard since last July and the guy has only been able to find rear discs so far, has not been able to get fronts anywhere..probably cos hes trying to get second handies, but you still think you'd be able to get them somewhere...not the case obviously!! New ones would probably burn a hole in the pocket!

Mel,

What about a set of DBA upgrades? Either the R32 GT-R DBA's or even GTS-t/GTS25t DBA's? I'd get regency to give you the EXACT size requirements (thickness & dia') & have a chat to the guys from DBA.

I'd like to know why Regency decided you needed a full roadworthy inspection!? It was previously registered in NSW so it should have just been a VII (Vehicle Identity Inspection) That's all I was required to do! The engine swap was the issue obviously but how did it get registered in NSW without being engineered in the first place! Sounds a little dodgy to me!

As whatsisname said,

speak to steve from dba (he is a guru and should be able to help)

jump onto performanceforums and go to the dba brakes forum and ask him there.

failing that (and I know your not in Sydney but I am happy to assist where I can) - give Narrabeen Brake and Clutch a call - the guys there are helping me with my 330mm upgrade to my brakes for about 2/3rds the price of other places.

HHmm...

interesting.

I agree with whatsisname

Ask them exactly what thickness they want.

It might just be the rotors you have are just a tad under and just need new ones!

But if not the GTR brakes are well worth it.

I've got an R31 GTS-R with an RB25DET (190kw-->9psi) but it has GTR (32) brakes... and mother of god does it pull up nice.

Or.. alternatively.

Go and get another Engineers ?

shouldn't be too expensive if you show them the old one.

If the engineer is happy then can they argue much more ?

i know in Vic if you got the engineers then Vic Roads are happy with that... well that's what heppened with mine anyhow :D

    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
