hey all.

did a few searches with no success.

Well now. i know that theres someone on here who has a 32 or 33 gts-t that uses the

r34 gtt standard intercooler, and is running approx 200rwkw.

the point is how much can they handle? im going to be running a garret gt2871r and usual support mods.

ive been told to expect about 250rwkw running 23psi (i know it alot of kw for the rb20 and that its gunna cost a bit).

i would like to run a smic so it appears to be stock.

It's not going to be good enough at that boost level. I had 190rwkw with it and that was fine but I wouldn't go much higher.

Remember to a certain extent, an intercooler is just a heat sink and if you have a small one you will get heat soak that much quicker.

The GTT intercooler is efficent upto 200rwkw and a good upgrade for a R33 GTS25-T if you dont plan on upgrading your turbo

There are really 2 things to consider, temperature control and airflow;

Temperature control, 200 rwkw is no problem, we have seen 215 rwkw which was OK on normal day. But in traffic on a hot day, it simply wasn't adequate. On the circuit for a couple of laps it was OK, but any longer and it heat soaked noticeably and started to knock.

Airflow, 200rwkw is no problem, we have seen 215 rwkw at 2-3 psi pressure drop, any more and the pressure drop skyrockets. This is OK as long as the turbo has excess capacity. But when you want to use the turbo to produce its target airflow you will be compromised by the capacity of the core.

yeah. ive heard about painting a front mount black. i reckon it will be the way to go. i hear its better for heat transfer? sort of makes sense to me... but would like to know if its definately true.

painting it will reduce how well it cools. and putting mesh in front of it lets less air to it. (only a bit less). so either way is going to reduce how much it cools. i'd probably go the mesh route over painting. with the mesh, the look depends on which way you put it. most mesh you can see though it better at a certain angle, so you'd have that way pointing down so it is harder to see through... if you get what i mean.

There has been a few very indepth technical discussions on here about painting intercoolers black. The general consensus was that it wont much difference either way as long as you don't put too much paint on.

indeed, i do know what you mean. like the glossy side has to be facing upward as to make it dificult to see.

ill investigate further. does painting it make a huge negative impact on cooling? or is it miniscule?

as abo bob said it depends on how thick you paint. would also depend slightly on what sort of paint. a cheap water base paint would affect the cooling less as it is thinner, but would cook off pretty quick. after reading most of the link i'd have to suggest to look at getting it anodised. buggers me where you'd get it done though.

but someone did a test and said that the temp went up for every coat of paint that went on.

Remember the r32 gtr intercooler is painted black from the factory.

In the book 21st Century Performance they found removing the stock black paint from an r32 GTR cooler made the cooler work LESS efficiently.

I think black paint would be a good idea if you can apply a nice thin coat (and only 1).

Or just get some wide spaced mesh, spray that black and it'll do a reasonable job @ hiding a silver cooler.

It'll look similar to the radiator really and pretty well conceled

Why worry about stock look anyway? The legalities? Or some other reason that i cant think of?

If it is legalities, your illegal and you'll have changed turbo, injectors, ECU etc

Most officers know these days.

There are virtually permanent, random inspection stations, going around Vic

Go around the wrong corner on the wrong day and you'll get pinned. Its very hard these days.

You'll find most normal officers know whats going on in Vic with regards to mods etc

Technically you are beaking the law, so your illegal (in a sense) :mellow:

You'd be better off getting an air dam to cover between the front lip & radiator so that people cant see whats beneath it, as your going to be using non-factory piping anyway :mellow:

OR use a GT-t airbox. They flow quite well from all reports, then you make yourself harder to be picked again

Actually anodising can be done by youreself. i know Bunnigns use to sell a product that did copper and steel. i presure it couls be used on alluminium. It will make it go black. Check it out.

Umm, i think you will find its for an anodised "look".

Anywa, its winter, so that means you intercooler woll be silver for about 3 months, wet grimey roads and dirt end up with your cooler being a darg grey anyway

i still have the standard air box and i wont change it unless the gt-t airbox flows better???

i geuss the only way to get around this is to get an engineer's certificate....

Im not sure if the GT-t airbox is bigger, but i think it is from memory.

Engineers cert wont cover it :D

You need emissions, thats expensive

Changing up to an r34 gtt intercooler on an R32 or 33 is a legal modification if you read the regulations carefully. It is in the same positiion and is of the same type.

    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!  
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
    • I'd say it's a fair bet that the feed and return fluid lines will be in different enough spots that you would need to come up with a way to cut the originals short and adapt with new hard line adaption or braided teflon hoses or somesuch. But really, you have the car, you have the photos of the DMAX rack - you should be able to go out there and see for yourself whether they're in the same or different spots.
    • I've been doing some looking around and honestly was just considering throwing a new rack at it. I saw that the dmax silvia rack bolts up into the 33 with the silvia bushings but not sure if the high pressure lines will sit in the correct spot. I believe other version of the 33 rack are the same/similar to the racks that can be opened up without as much fuss so I assume the dmax rack would fit but any ideas?
    • I've never played with one, but I would expect that you are correct. That slot looks like it is intended to be used to unscrew the end, and the flats on the body would be better than grabbing it around the round bit with a pipe wrench. So, yeah, probably unscrews. You'll probably have to make a tool to drive in that slot.
