Called them up. They want to charge me $500 for installation and machining on flywheel. I was like "WTF!" , laters

$499 of that is simply due the pain involved in getting the top starter motor bolt back in.

If you've ever had to do it you'll under stand! :D

Well I have no idea how much a clutch install is worth, but Bens time is definately worth whatever price tag he puts on it. I guess you could go to any unknown mechanic that probably sells stolen parts and breaks/steals a bunch of other parts on your car while they're at it, so you keep giving them/losing money for months, but ultimately you pay for quality.

Of course some mechanics charge more than you'd expect and yet still do an extremely crappy job, but I've never heard one complaint about Racepace or their work, unlike most other 'performance' workshops in VIC.

Didnt you notice something there Snowy?

bcc23 is obviously paying to get it done.

So another obvious, he has never done it himself, just another internet mechanic ;)

Wonder if he can fix my browser, it wont stay the size i want it to :)

No ones forcing you.

Get it done wherever you want.

Im happy to pay the price for the best GTR workshop in Australia to work on my car. Considering the time & effort Ben has put into my car over the years & the care and attention to detail its received when there.......

Sounds like you have been going to the wrong mechanics, don't put everyone under the same banner :).

Not all good, honest, mechanics charge top dollar

How many people here can honestly say they have only used the one same mechanic for the last 6yrs, and not just to do oil changes, i am talking serious modifications.

sometimes it takes some people longer than others to see whats really going on

Still waiting...

Unfortunately you had a major falling out with Vic, but I heard two different sides to the story. Before the parting you were very close to Vic and George, so if you have anything else to add I am more than willing to listen. As the falling out between both of you was personal, I decided to keep out of it and hopefully remain friends with both yourself and Vic.

To date I am yet to see/hear any justification why I should go elsewhere. His work has been A1 with reasonable prices, and my car has been proven to be a very neat and strong formula. Not saying he is perfect, as every one/shop has a few irritating moments, but at the end of the day the "whole picture" is completed to a very high standard.

If you have any information to the contrary I would really appreciate it if you told me directly, and in private.

Well said Rod.

Thread closed. Its quickly turning to shit.

I have my own views on many places around Victoria as i've used many and only found one to be worth the money.

cheers

    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
    • Neg, the top one is actually for the front. The sizes are 18x10.5 +18 and 18x11 +32.   I measured many times but I'm sure I'll have problems as this is the thread for problems.
    • Just one thing; tapping tapered threads is tricky. Taps are always tapered and you would generally run it as far as you can, but with a tapered thread you have to stop much sooner otherwise the wide part of the taper will run in too far and you will have to thread the sensor in too far too as well (possible that it will never make a good seal) BTW nice wide wheels, I guess the top one is for the back!
    • Welp, good to know. Will have to wait awhile until steady hands with drills and taps are available. In other news, these just arrived! I will weigh them for posterity. Edit: 11kg each (or 10.9/11.1 depending on what my scale decides over multiple tests, the 18x11 don't seem to weigh noticeably any more than 10.5)
