lol.

BTW does anyone know how to take the panel off an R32 without wrecking it? I have one of those light on ones, but it looks like it's stuck down with some sorta foam, wouldn't mind pulling it off and checking the electrical connections so I can have it lighting up properly!

Skyline Light Up Tutorial

Doing this is at your OWN risk I take no responsibility for any damage or accidents which may occur throughout this tutorial, if you're unsure ASK, if you don't think you can do it DON'T

What You Will Need:

Dermal Tool (Rotary Tool)

Heavy Duty Dermal Cut Off Wheel

Dermal Sanding Band*

Rocker Switch* : If you want to turn it off and on

~ 14 High Intensity LED's ~$60+ from Jaycar or ~$20 from eBay, Check the light output rating

~6-14 Resistors: Pennies at Jaycar, You can use one resistor per LED or for every 2 (But if one burns out so will the other) Use THIS website to calculate the ohm's required for your array

Sheet of Experimenters Board: Try to get one that is long enough for the whole thing so you dont have to go through the hassel of putting them together

Some Wires: Try to get different colors for convince sake

Can of Paint: Match your color code (Recommend Autobarn Moorabbin, they can mix you up a can specific to your car and it's really useful for touch ups

Can of Lacquer*: Technically this isn't a must but it provides a nice shine & seal, also gives your that smooth feeling you have on your car

Painters Tape

Exacto Knife

th_1Garnish.jpgth_2Garnish.jpg

Alright we first start with your Skyline Garnish after taking it off of your car inspect i and make sure it's all nice and clean, you will notice some faded paint on the letters start by sanding them off to get the best light through

th_3RemoveTabs.jpg

Start by cutting the tabs off the back

th_4RemovePlastic.jpg

Now cut the entire plastic backing out, enough to expose all the letters; For my next project I'm going to try to cut a small hole instead and slide the entire board in but it's up to you

th_5RemovePlastic.jpgth_6RemovePlastic.jpg

This is what your Garnish should look like when you're finished

th_7SandEdges.jpg

You can sand down the edges if you really want to but in reality no one is going to see the back it's only for your own satisfaction

th_8PrepPaint.jpgth_9PrepPaint.jpg

Place painters tape across the lettering and run your fingers along the outside of the lettering it should tear the tape allowing you to just cover the individual letters

th_10Spray.jpgth_11Spray.jpg

After cleaning the Garnish again prep your area for painting (preferably outside) apply several even coats of paint (I did 5 if I recall correctly but it's based on how happy you are with it) allow at least 20 minutes between each coat (maybe less or more depending on the weather)

th_12Laquer.jpg

*REMOVE THE PAINTERS TAPE OFF THE LETTERING BEFORE APPLYING LACQUER* I forgot to remove the tape before applying the Lacquer which was a pretty stupid mistake and it ruins the finish, not by a lot but it's a lot of work to fix. After you completed your final coat allow drying for a few hours before applying Lacquer; this will seal the paint and give it a nice Glossy finish

th_13Finish.jpg

Admire your handy work before starting the hard bit

th_14LEDArray.jpg

Cut down your Experimenters board down to size measuring it up to the hole you cut in the Garnish

th_16LEDArrayBack.jpgth_15LEDArrayFront.jpg

I know this was an extremely crap soldering job; Solder all your LED's, Resistors and your wiring onto the board

th_17Wiring.jpg

Finally hook up the garnish to your car wiring in the rocker switch if you want to be able to turn it on and off, as a precaution I wired this to my ACC wire so it can only turn on while the key is in

Use THIS website to calculate the ohm's required for your array

Great walkthru there mate, thanks alot. I will try to fix my panel this weekend, hopefully it´ll work out fine :P

Just one question: what website to calculate the ohm´s?

excellent guide, will do mine next week, anyone bought the leds from ebay

WHAT IS THE BEST SIZE LEDS TO USE 3 4 5 OR 10 MM

NARROW ANGLE 20 DEGREES WOULD BE BETTER THAN WIDE ANGLE 180 DEGREES I PRESUME

sorry to res an old thread, but thought I would share a new way of doing this. I am going to use the new "tri" colour LED's witch is one LED with 3 colours, and 4 pins instead of the normal 2.

my plan is to have 4 try colour LED's to just lightly light up the "skyline panel" when the lights or parkers are on, then when the brakes are applied, another 7 tri coloured LED's will light up (same colour) and act as a brake light.

there will obviously be a 3 way switch to select between the 3 colours (red, blue and green). I will probably have this in the ash tray up the front so its hidden.

I've given it a lot of thought, and being an electronics geek I've already drawn up plans.

I've only just bought my S1 panel of a SAU member as I have a S2 R33.

heres a pic of the LED's I'm talking about, and I'll make sure I upload pics once its done and even a tutorial if enough people show interest.

I may consider doing this for others if they pay for all the parts :)

33 or 32? Im going to see how this one comes up first as I'm sure what I'm doing has never been done before, maybe I can help you out at a later date if your interested.

Are you talking to me? if so its an R32 I seen it on a R35 on the front Looks Beautiful

    • So, it went to Unigroup for a run in and tune on Friday, everything went (generally) well. In terms of fixes, the engine was good and there were no leaks. It needed plugs (I hadn't checked them because the coil pack cover was on a new engine and I couldn't imagine they weren't new.....but turns out the temporary plugs to just keep it sealed up were in there.....new plugs gapped to 0.8 and it was fine from there. Also, there was a little preload on the clutch slave which caused some slip. I haven't had the box off so I don't know what the clutch looks like; my guess it is brand new and the pedal had not been adjusted....backed that off a bit and it held fine. Last thing will have Dose crying....the idle especially when cold is a bit difficult between the cams, forward plenum, atmo blow off valve and an 80s air management system. It is fine when hot but a little uneven when cold, will see if I can sort or at least improve that one cold morning. Other than that, tuning went fine. It made 245 but was pulled back to 227 which 2 opportunities to improve in future. 1. The factory CAS is not great and was jumping around at high RPM, so Mark took 2 degrees out up top (that is why it stops making power and lost 20kw). Very safe this way and the extra power is available but will require a more modern ECU and better cam (or even better crank) sensor 2. The 2871 in factory housings is very big for a low mount, and the internal wastegate is too small, so it was creeping from mid range all the way to redline....the duty cycle on the boost controller is turned down a little for safety. That is much harder to fix, it would need a large external gate and that would require a whole bunch of other changes, so it will go as it is for now. It feels nice and healthy and safe, so should be good for about a billion laps like this.
    • what sort of caliper are they? If they are a slider and you gave everything a good clean, you might need to regrease the pins. My guess though is they will come good after some abuse as suggested above
    • I don't know what you should expect with an LS, but the oil pressure sounds terrible, sorry. As for the brakes, you can get fade from the pads not just the fluid, although generally that feels like a wooden block not doing anything while fluid feels like an oh shit there is no pedal so you can generally tell. What pads are you running front and rear?
    • Went over my datalogs on a whim and noticed a worrying combination of events. High RPM High Temperature Low Oil Pressure Knock Retard I bought some 10w-60 because I actually think this will be better going forward given track temp is 125C and 10-40 will actually be thinner in those environments. I know I had a leak but it's not entirely sure how much pressure loss can be attributed to that. The knock retard does correlate with all of the above. When it's not present oil pressure is higher. And by 'low' I mean at 6800 RPM the oil pressure was recorded as low as ~35psi pretty constantly. Which is obviously very not good. I'm hoping that thicker oil that ISNT LEAKING will result in a bit more pressure when I need it. Also in the last session I got a very spongy break pedal. I bled the lines as the car is on jack stand right now with the wheels off and I noticed... no air in the lines? Maybe the tiniest bit of tiny frothy bubbles for the first 0.1 seconds of bleeding the whole car? The breaks did come back to me after I backed off (and felt fine driving normally). Doesn't appear to be any leaks anywhere that I can see. Any thoughts on that?
    • Solution, run shitter tyres. Let wheel spin be your weak link 😛
