Where To Get A Good Value Pc

Hello Boys & Girls,

B-Man needs a new PC System as the old clucker PIII is getting a bit old and haggard.

So, where can you got a good high end system from ( Fast everything, big LCD monitor, etc, etc)

Lemme know where the best deals are - Cause although I am in IT - I have know friggin idea where to go.

I have looked on the Dell Website and they have some good gear - but surely I can get something for a bit cheaper.

Build it from scratch - that way everything is suited to you and you can buy or omit parts depending on your budget and requirements!

Most motherboards come with basic instructions showing you what to plug in and where. Just make sure your motherboard matches the processor you're going to use, you get lots of RAM, a decent video card and lots of hard-drive space (you won't believe how quickly a hard-drive gets filled once you start adding programs for this, that and the other).

Also partition your hard drive(s) so that if your Windows (or another program) stuffs up, you don't lose everything you had stored. Put your Windows install on the main partition (C: ) along with most of your essential programs, and then any pictures, music, videos etc. can go on the other partition(s) you've created.

these guys are absolute assholes but they have good prices, their unhelpful staff will not help you with any query you may have.

walk in with parts already listed and ready to throw in his face. the less words spoken the less chances you have of wanting to throw something.

another vote for MSY

listen to what security says, they are damn cheap but worst service ever. go in the store with a list, and expect half of the stuff u want to be out of stock, but in the end if u want to save money its the place to go to.

another tip is go to the new ultimo store during the week, its quiet. dont ever dare to go to either of the msy stores on the weekend or u will be in for a long day!

Yeah I've been using ARC for years. They also have a shop right next door to ADVAN in Silverwater which is usually pretty empty.

They still don't suffer people who don't know much about computers gladly but they are fairly cheap, have pretty good stock levels and not too long to wait, but again saturdays they are pretty busy. You can pre order your pc on their website though.

Also I would advise against going too high end cos computers are priced exponentially.

Also I would stay away from Dell.

I don't really want to build it myself - been there done that - can't be farked. Plus, it has been so long, I don't know what goes with what any more.

Looking for a high end multimedia / home theatre system with like 20" LCD etc - Full system.

What's better these days ? Intel Dual Core or the AMD CPUs ??

I'm moving into a smaller place so I am gonna ditch my 81cm CRT TV monster - I want to be able to run Computer & TV / DVD on the same screen etc.

I configured the highest spec Dell Gamer OC and it came to like $5K - that 's with a 24" LCD screen.

Adam - why not Dell ? I used Dell at Telstra (for workstations and servers) and they seemed pretty good.

I understand that prices are exponential to speed/power too - so not going for top top of the range, but maybe just top of the range - to try and protect the invenstment (might get another 6 monts out of it if I spec it up a bit)

Yea places like MSY are good if you know what you are doing.

Dell isnt that bad, nice packages, good for people who just wanna use it. But knowing what you can get for 5k Dell is expensive put its like most brand names.

The exponential point is that you might get an extra 6 months out of a higher end system but is it worth $2k for instance?

What Adrian is saying is that he sells computers for more than the aforementioned places but in return he gives customer service. I do too but my opinion is that it's horses for courses. How much customer service do you want? Tell us and we'll tell you where to go.

ARC have english speaking people. They are 18 year old computer nerds. Really know their stuff but have very poor communication skills.

I bought my last desktop over the net from AusPCMarket who used to have their shop in gladesville but now is in Silverwater or somewhere around there.

They will assemble it for you and have a range of pre-defined systems you can choose from (click the "systems" link on the home page).

Their website is always up to date on prices and while it's not the 100% cheapest around it is competitive since all their prices include delivery.

As far as spec goes, I went with a dual core AMD 64 and i throw quite a lot of shit at it and it still goes damn fast. Dual cores mean you can be playing a game and alt-tab and you still have an entire cpu core to work with in the background.

As for motherboards i can recommend anything by DFI, the more you pay the more features you get. These are designed for gamers pretty much.

I got a 19" Benq LCD with it and its pretty decent although of course the bigger the better and the Dell 24" LCD is looking pretty good these days if you can find it on special.

1gb memory at the very minimum and SATAII Hard drive(s) as big as you can afford. With the memory, try going for a brand name matched pair of modules (like Corsair) since im pretty sure most chipsets access memory faster in pairs these days.

The video card is quite important whether you play a lot of games or not and spending more is better. For under $500 you can have a GeForce7900GT that will handle anything you can throw at it today and for a while to come. PCI-E x16 (replaced AGP) cards are what you want to look at, making sure the motherboard you choose has the capability to use them.

I build PC's but I won't recommend you use my company as I'll be leaving here in a few weeks and I'm not so sure they'll deliver decent ongoing support when I'm gone

Seriously, don't spend $5k on a new PC. It'll be worth jack shit in next to no time. $3k should get you something pretty damn beefy.

Dual Core AMD, 2G Ram, decent graphics card, nice big SATA2 hdd, and get a 24" DELL monitor for ~$1200ish from bulkbuyer. It doesn't cost *that* much to get a good PC these days....
