hi guys

want a tacho for d4d this saturday. mine doesnt work. what are the rules about mounting them? my friend had one on a vl on the dash but had to move it an inch accross to get a rwc. ive read on here that you cant have anything above the stock instrument cluster. whats the go? thanks jason

Really?

Then where the heck are you supposed to mount a boost gauge?

Putting it above the dash makes a (small) blindspot, putting it in the air vent hole maks it too far out of the way to see.

WTF?

mmhmm well from what i heard... chu can have any sort of gauges places anywhere only "within" your vechile... and so the external ones aren't consider road worthy :)

This link has some info about legalities of external gauges. Hope this helps :domokun:

My friend who is a TMU officer went and asked superiors caus he wasn't sure and was told: nothing higher than 30cm from the bottom of the dash or it's an obstruction of vision.

And yes we both agreed that was ridiculous. I'm not sure if he was specially referring to a 180 but it's pretty ridiculous either way, I don't even know what you'd count the 'bottom' as... maybe the cluster or the plastic piece below it?

I think mounting on the pillar is even defectable in QLD now. Definately not legal in VIC.

Thanks Kaz, shame

Also thanks for the link Rekin

I had an a-pillar boost gauge, and it never caused a problem.

There were a few queries about my placement of the AVCR/RSM - but mainly for it being an EBC rather than where it was.

I personally wouldn't stress too much... but there is a difference between a 52 or 60mm gauge an one of those Flava-Flav style monster tachs.

Have you thought about an RSM?

Shows your RPM and can be a bit more flexible in it's placement.

BTW: the new toy has some DEFI BFs fitted already - they are on the DEFI stands on the dash to the right of the binnacle - so the bottom of the a-pillar.

Should be as legal as you can be.

DEFI stands here - http://www.nippon-seiki.co.jp/defishop/pro...p/op_bezel.html

it cannot be higher then the lines of the dash.

The thing i dont understand is that its an obstruction of vision yet taxi drivers can have there stuff mounted all the way up the A piller with no issue.

Yes its a there job to take people around, but there only normal drivers and why does it exempt them from obstruction of vision, they are still normal drivers

Alan, get a gauge pod that sits on the dash, looks OEM

Thanks Dark but I dont like the placing of them. :(

My favourite place is the A-Pillar as I dont like cluttering the dash. I dont mind them in the dash but prefer them in the A-Pillar.

just do it :(

its not hard to take it off if you need to clear the defect...and i got myself a spare pillar plastic (which already had a hole hacked into it in the perfect place for wires :)), so that if i ever change my mind, I'll put my plastic back on and have a hole free interior :O

that was one of the specific things i looked for when importing my car....didnt want 1 that already had gauges etc all over the place, because i didn't want holes everywhere

So long as you're looking at a sensible sized gauge - I honestly wouldn't stress about it.

As long as it doesn't impede your vision - nor sit as an obvious hazard, then do it. Worst case, someone will ask you to move it. The HUGE gauges are just stupid for street use anyway.

Here was my old setup (sniff) - as I said, a-pillar and RSM/AVCR were never an issue.

Don't know where you guys are getting your info from but I looked into this pretty carefully before fitting my gauges. According to Vicroads (unless someone corrects me otherwise) -

* the gauge cannot obstruct the drivers vision

* the gauge cannot be put in a spot where either the driver or passengers head would make contact in an accident. ie no a-pillar, not on the 'front' face of the dash (like just above the glovebox in a 33)

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
