nah, i just mean if you are going on friday as it's only a half day you should probably go on either the sat or sun also (so 1.5 days total).

could go 3 days if you want but you will be pretty knackered.

Richard and Nick won't be the enthusiastic nutters anymore that basically shot off into the distance the moment we arrived at the entrance in '04 ;) ... hahaha they're oldskool now.

Well I'll head the 'veterans group' for any of those who want to take it easy (rather than run) and down a few beers while discussing the finer points of the few proper performance cars that are there. /sarcasm

Well each day that passes its more and more likely that I will be there.

Any reccomendations for accomodation close by?

Nick, there is a great hotel close to Makuhari Messe that we regularly use, pm me and I will give you the details.

still reckon 1 day is more than enough time to do it all.

Do-able :D

Getting in there first thing Friday and spending the first half of the day checking everything out without the wall to wall crowds is the best option if you have the required means to get in

just wondering, im not 100% sure on how TAS works. is there prelims and final battles? or is it just one show in january?

i wanted to go mid/late 07 but if its only in january... its either that or TAS 08 ive wanted to go to japan since i was in school and its only just become affordable.

also, what is the recommended amount of $$$ for say a weeks stay in tokyo?

TAS is one show per year, not like the 'Aussie' Autosalon series.

As for the $$$, thats a hard question and really depends what you intend doing and where you want to stay.

Something that might make a meet up easier, do 3G phones work in Japan?

Ive had mixed answers, was wondering if anyone has actually tried it

Phones make life easier, especially if you dont know your way around.

The best option is a prepaid phone which can be had from memory for around 8000 yen but setting them up without being able to read/understand Japanese isnt easy

when I asked vodafone earlier this year they told me my aus 3G phone would work in japan.

my advice is just hire one. you can do it through JAL if you want. There are a few companies that offer it.

  • 2 weeks later...
I stayed in Chiba at the Chiba Park Hotel, right near Chiba Upgarage :O

It was a 10min skyrail ride to Tokyo City, and a 20mins train ride to the Mekuhari Messe, where the Auto Salon is held. id go again if it wasnt going to cost me $5K for a week! haha

Awesome place to visit. Cars/Sights/Culture/Geisha gals, everything you could ask for in a holiday!

How about give us some more info Matt, your package sound like a good idea.

Offcourse Jetstar sounds good but i dont' want to be put on one of those Ex KGB Russian plane :O, no i'm only kidding, we have our DOT ( Department of transport ) and i'm sure they wont' let that happen. Also like Beer baron said, i'm ain't going to sacrrify luxury for $2 fanta, $1 snack..ect though i couldnt' afford business class :O otherwise.

Talk about air hostesse, last time while on my way to LA, i stop by at Osaka for a day and a night, i was placed right oposite where JAL air hotesses sit, there is no better place i'm telling you :D .

Then again, i'm still searching hard for tours package where they put you in OLD TRADITION JAPANESE house, i would like that very much. Japanese country side scenic is also a must. Anyone have any experience with flight centre? They've offer to put together a package for us, i'm still waiting for them to come back to me.

Me and my mates plan to go to Japan for 2 weeks, beside from the Salon, any other things? Night club? No Japanese mafia please, drag events, street drift?

West, I will be there in January as well for Autosalon and it seems there will be a number of others there also - There is no shortage of things to get up to while you are there so dont worry

Mad, can't get any better to tag along with someone that's already been there, done that and love to do it again :).

What's the best hotel as in bang for bucks and where is the best place to stay?

Woah... Flashback :D

Have been super busy with work haven't had time to check the forums in ages !

But good news, I will be heading off to Japan flying over with JAL late december and returning mid January.

I'm going to the Autosalon as well as just exploring around and doing a bit of sight seeing then !!!!! flying up to Sapporo to do a bit of skiiing.

Looking foward to it.

    • That is way more science than even I would use. I just eyeball it, not even accounting for the non-verticality of the tape measure when held on the lip and the centre at the same time. +/- 2mm is good enough for the girls I go out with.
    • So, before putting them in I need to understand the stock ride height. This is how I measured it: First, check the diameter of the wheel's centre cap, it was 52mm. Then put a piece of masking tape approximately across the centre and measure 27mm (half) from at least 3 sides to get a reasonable idea of the centre of the wheel cap. Mark that with a horizontal line as one measuring point. Then, directly above the wheel on the guard, put another piece of masking tape in approximately the centre. Use a string line to find out the point on the guard above the centre of the wheel cap and mark that. Then it is simple, just a tape measure to check the distance from centre of the wheel to the centre of the guard. Final results where  LF: 381mm RF: 379mm LR: 401mm RR: 400mm Pretty even considering they are 120,000klm old factory springs, lets call that 380 front and 400 rear.
    • So....knowing that I have a problem with power steering temps on track and another Wakefield day booked in next Friday, I've done the obvious thing They are very reasonably priced at $1650, considering they are a big monotube shock, double height adjustable (don't have to change pre-load to change ride height), one way adjustable damping and standard sized and customisable springs if you want something other than what comes with them. They come with 9kg/mm front and 4.5kg/mm front and I went with that as a starting point because I'll add adjustable sway bars too https://justjap.com/products/bc-racing-coilover-kit-ds-ds-infiniti-q50-v37-14-current#description Unfortunately they didn't come with rear strut tops so I've re-used the factory ones which was a bit of a pain. Also, the adjuster for the rear shock will be an absolute nightmare to get at, and while there are extensions in the kit I can't see any way you can actually attach or use them
    • I also had 2 bulbs blow at once, years ago in the stagea. made for a fun drive home. The issue was the voltage regulator had failed in the alternator and it was giving 15+ volts. Really, I was lucky all that was fried were the headlight bulbs. So, I'd suggest you check the voltage across your battery terminals with the car running and warmed up. Yes, you will need a multimeter to do so, sorry.
    • Good work to think to check that, and thanks for coming back to post up the outcome.
