Pretty pissed off. After putting it off as i had other things to spend my money on, i finally fronted the cash for HKS 264/8.8mm cams. Got a price on them, and placed order.

Only to hear that HKS have now scrapped this model cam, and now comes in 9.0mm lift See Here

Problem is it doesnt say if they are Step 1 or 2 cams. If i run these do i need valve springs? I see that Jun now have cams, but the ones compatible with std springs appear to be the same as Tomei Poncams.

So are there any HKS groupies out there that know the full story on the new 9.0mm cams. Are they bolt in goodness for an RB20, or should i just grab the Tomei cams.

why not go with tomei cams, they offer 260/8.9mm intake and exhaust cams which i run with no problem in my rb20.

beides hks cams lope like crazy and tomei cams idle with nearly stock exh note.

I cant see the cam you describe

Oh, so its bolt in with no miods to head or springs?

Waiting to hear back from a guy that has Apexi cams...but then will decide.

Mind you im about 12 hours away from going on a rampage and knifing every prick that has used me, torching the car...then packing my bags and leaving the country to tend to sheep in the middle of Siberia..or something. Nothing is going right

  • 2 months later...

I just got a mystery pack of HKS Cams... I was told they came out of a RB25 but I dunno if it were a S1 or S2. But I cannot identify them for the life of me.

One cam says HKS RB N2 264E on it - Although I thought E stood for Exhaust but it doesnt have the CAS lobe in it. My other Cam says HKS 20 25 264A on it - and it has the CAS lobe in it.

So I can figure out the duration I have no other means of identifying which model they are. By process of elimination - here is what HKS specify for RB20 and RB 25 in 264. And I think looking at the chart below that the Exhaust Cam is the only one that changed for the RB25 S2, but my cam says 20 25 so It should be safe to say its 2202-RN175

RB20

IN 264 9.0mm Lift 110 degree Part No 2202-RN174

EX 264 9.0mm Lift 115 degree Part No 2202-RN175

RB25 S1

IN - No 264 listed?

EX 264 9.0mm Lift 115 degree Part No 2202-RN175 (Same as RB20).

RB25 S2

IN - No 264 listed?

EX 264 9.0mm Lift 115 degree Part No 2202-RN176

So it looks like I should be right assuming 9.0mm lift on my cams - but how can I be sure? Also, can anyone please point out what things I should do to my valvetrain when installing them?

Thanks,

Jai

Measure the lift on the cams with a set of digital verniers, measure across the lobe

(base circle) then from the top of the lobe to the other sied of the lobe (hope this makes some sense) the difference in the measurement is the lift

ROY i ran HKS 264 with 9mm lift in my old rb20 with std. springs, no valve bouncing on the dyno@! had solid lifters tho. Ran with no problems, stupidly lumpy idle tho, and loud too, not recommended for when your pulled over in a RBT or if u got elderly neighbours with no prozac

I havent. Spoke to the person that tuned my car and he said that only being a 2L with a 400hp odd turbo. It will be easy to over cam the motor and lose even more low to mid.

So trusting him i have given up the idea of putting cams in my RB20. The rebuild will get cams, but for the time being the std RB20 will be staying a std RB20.

I would love to have the money to pay him to dyno the car. Then install the cams, retune the ECU and dial in the cam gears and see the power difference. But, thats a lot of cost for an extra 10 or so kws so...or not

Hi Roy

these are the cams I was running hks 264 9.0mm lift with standard valve springs and no mods to heads .Though with the rebuild im installing rb26det valve springs

Cheers Peter

P.S lift was stamped on the bottom of cam nearest firewall

    • Before I commit to it as I already have the wastegate off the car, would you change it to the 9psi spring instead of the 12, or whack it back on now and try your suggestion?   Edit: Actually I might just swap the spring and see what the logs say after another few pulls, as we know it's still spiking without the Mac valve in the picture so I need more data without the Mac valve trying to combat the issue.
    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
