so f1 racers and the v8 racers etc etc just wear them for looks? or is it to hide that they are talking on the fone? or that they are really all robots in disguise?

Thats millions of dollars of safety tech we don't have in our cars so you gotta remember that.. but one helmet is better than no helmet!

Anyway, the idea its a big open place, so nobody hits anybody. All i'd be worried about is somebody rolling.. but i assume there will have to be some ground rules and the like to keep it as safe as possible.

Well what i'm saying is that yours and my cars arn't exactly F1 or V8 Super Cars are they, lol. You dont watch the news and see those cars torn in half etc? What i ment is your helmet wont do much if your car is the size of a tin can and your still in it eh! :P But yeah Helmet wouldn't hurt.

How long is the straight? We will need at least 2 miles for a high speed run.

Has anyone organising this event thought about liability insurance. I belong to a car club, and whenever a public event (like this one) is organised insurance is a priority.

Al, you won't get a straight 2 miles long on any race track AFAIK - an airport runway maybe but not a race track!

For reference, Sandown's Length of Main straight: 491m

Calder national full-track, Length: 2.28km [straight is possibly up to 1000m at a guess]. From motorsport.com.au "Calder Park also boasts the longest drag racing strip in Australia"

I wouldnt mind knowing how long Avalon airstrip is

/more researching/...

Excerpt from Avalon Airport Australia AVA

A new era for Avalon dawned in April 1959 with the Opening of the Qantas Jet Training Base established for the introduction of the Boeing 707. The airport underwent significant development for this purpose and included an extension of the runway to its present length of 3,048 metres (10,000 ft) in 1972 as a precursor to the introduction of the Qantas' B747 fleet. Avalon remains a location for Qantas training, aircraft refurbishment and maintenance today.

Thats possibly the longest we are going to get in Oz / Vic.

Yes, but how are we going to get in there? Looked on the web and there is 24kms of all sorts of roads including high speed areas etc...

I am sure LinFox doesnt own Lang Lang PG!

Anyone got a good contact @ holden / hsv?

...My Dad [R.I.P] used to know Peter Brock...

when u hire the airport out i am sure u r gonna have to sign some legal document so incase sum1 dies (touch wood) or smashes their car or sumthing they cant sue the owners of the airport!

And if u get cover for like 30 cars it will cost about 20 grand or so, thats what stopped the other track day we had planned at shepperton about 1 year ago.

Double check all the details.

If its in writing and signed by the responsible parties [ie everyone involved] it will be legal.

Our current insurers have a disclaimer that makes your cover null and void when you "race" your car...some will allow it for an extra premium but not many [and the cost is huge]! I have heard stories of some people removing their number plate for track days - just in case :(

I would assume that if someone damaged my car, being their fault, they would pay for repair, otherwise you can count me out! If I damage someone else's car I pay - its that simple.

    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
