I have shattered the exhaust wheel of the lower turbo on my 1989 R32 GTR ~109,000km and need to get new turbos. The car is mainly driven on weekends with the intention of occasional track days. I have Peugeot 205 GTI as a daily driver.

Let me start by saying I did a search and have read the following threads:

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...showtopic=80624

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...126186&st=0

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...c=83371&hl=

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...121435&st=0 even though it's about a RB25 it had some good points to consider.

and http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...=124176&hl= for a basic understanding of what turbos are and how they work.

Current mods (that I'm aware of):

Turbo back exhaust with high flow cat

HKS air pods

125mm Apexi FMIC

Apexi front pipes

Remapped ECU

HKS EVC set at 10 psi (low) & 17 psi (high)

Blitz BOVs

Heavy duty clutch (not sure of brand but previous owner didn't go cheap on anything)

Plus more stuff for handling, gauges etc not relevant for current project.

Stock dump pipes

Stock airflow meter

I believe it has standard injectors and fuel pump.

The car previously made about 250rwkW at 17psi

From the research I’ve done today I gather if I get R34 N1, Garrett GT2860-7, HKS GTSS or Garrett GT2860-9 turbos I will get about 250-270rwkW with good response and midrange punch without having to make any other changes. Cost about $4-5k with labour and tuning. What boost will achieve these power figures?

If I get HKS 2530 or Garrett GT2860-5 turbos I will get 300-350rwkW but will less responsive and be more peaky. I’ll also need to get 700cc injectors, a new ECU, fuel pump, dump pipes and spend an extra $400+ on tuning. Have I missed something?

I guess 2xGT2860-5, SARD injectors, a Power FC, N1 fuel pump and brand 'x' dump pipes (I’ll have to investigate these more) with labour and tuning will cost between $8-9k.

Is this all correct? What have I missed or should consider?

Hi there,

The Project you are undertaking sound like mine.

700cc sard injectors,Nismo( fuel,oil,water,regulator)Splitfire coils, Iritop-7 plugs,Power fc,Avcr boost controler,HKS dump pipes,Manifolds,GT2860-5(which i have a set for sale with manifolds brand new).

You have missed the following.

New lines, Braided oil(smaller lines than the originals)

New water lines, also connected to the Turbo's

Gasket sets for Manifolds and turbo's.

New coil pack,

New Spark Plugs-7 heat range.

You really dont need a boost controller if you are happy winding up the actuators to 1 or1.1 bar.

You said dump pipes.....yeah you need these for the 2530's...oh sorry gt2860r-5...just so you can spool up earlier.

You might consider having some oil mods done ,prevention is better than the cure

Don't forget though.....cams and adjustable gears with stronger springs and bolts are required to get the full potential of all good turbo upgrades.

Oh then you will be able to go so fast....you need to upgrade your brakes....front only will do.:(:(:P;)

The list is never ending in a gtr

You missed some , but yeah 9K Plus /Approx will do it. My second set of -5 Turbo's i an selling with manifolds for $2800.(Brand New)..so shop around. Injectors i bought for $890.Coil pack for $700.Sparks$170.Dumps HKS $700.Fuel PumpN1 $550Approx.N1 Regulator $270.

Power fc $980.Allow $200 for lines and $200 for gaskets.Allow about $2500 for labour and Tune for these items. So do your sums.

Hope i have been some help

Regards

Tekin

PM ME if you want to know where i got these from .

Have you have the motor inspected yet?

More often than not... when a GTR lets a turbo go, it also gets ceramic bits into the motor and destroys a piston or two unfortunately.

GT-SS/N1's will net you 300rwkw... the 2530's are around the 340-380rwkw mark. Or even more, but then stocker motor, 2530's + 350rwkw equals a dead circuit raced motor.

Settle with the N1's/GT-SS/Garretts, which are all more or less the same.

300rwkw on around 18-20psi and will be a good performer on a stock motor.

Thanks for your replies Tekin and R31Nismoid. I have read alot of your posts today :P

I have already upgraded the front brakes (DBA 4000 rotors, Ferrodo DS2500 pads, braided lines and Castrol SRF brake fluid), the oil filter has been relocated with a GREX kit with all braided hoses, and I have an oil cooler and an oil catch can. The coils aren't standard but I don't know what they are. I'm using NGK platnium spark plugs. I use the presets on the HKS EVC as a boost controller.

I have booked a compression and leak down test which will be done later this week.

Your list came to about $10k Tekin which gives me a ballpark to work around - thanks. Did you get the hand controller with the Power FC?

"Don't forget though.....cams and adjustable gears with stronger springs and bolts are required to get the full potential of all good turbo upgrades." I was told that the standard cams were good enough for 350rwkW and didn't think I'd need to change them yet.

RB26 benefits more than the RB25 in the cam department.

over 300rwkw i would be looking at cams. cam gear for upto 300rwkw, then cams + gear after that if your budget restrained

More seaching and reading to do. I think I'll wait to tomorrow to read up on cams and cam gear. At least I look busy at work :P

David,

Yes Power fc came with controller....

You have chosen wisely(2530,s )

The cams and gears with stronger springs and bolts are only needed for peak

performance at high RPM...ie race track or drag. The standard cams are good for street and some track work.

Tune the car for good mid range response and enjoy.

On the other hand if you are looking for High Dyno results..and after track work aswell as drag .the above is needed.

The cams are roughly $1000 and gears about $400 Bolts about $500 Approx and spring $500Approx.I have not headed down this road yet, pricings are approx, but thought i could do it at a later stage of the cars development.

Take care

PM ME For pricing details for products.

As I said ,on a gtr the mods are endless.

I have used a pair of Trust T517Z on my GTR before with Cams, power FC, Exhaust, coolers etc...I was making 301kw@all wheels at 1.1bar

and now I up graded to pair of Tomei Turbos...still using the old T517Z maps in Power FC with heaps of lags making 394kw@all wheels....

if you are looking for cheap up grade..I can probably help you to get some brand new GTR replacement turbo (-10) for around $2900 to $3000. and with those turbos you can easily get over 340kw with stabdard internal.

generic garrets for $3K is not that great a price. for a very small amount more you could get a brand new set of HKS 2530s which come with gaskets, studs, lines etc. or for almost exactly $3K you could get a genuine HKS GT-SS kit which also comes with everything needed to install them. $3K for garretts is all well and good, but then you have a couple of hundred bucks, and some stuffing around to get all the bits needed to fit them.

if you want my advice this is what I would add to your current set-up.

either HKS GT-SS or GT 2530 kit

Power FC

Sard 700cc injectors

Nismo fuel pump

nismo fuel reg

tomei sump baffle kit

tomei type B pon-cam + cam gears

nismo airflow meters (or VG30 meters if you want)

This package will give you a meaty 300kw+ with very nice response when tuned properly. This is the secret, light tune GTR recipe for success. and it's been cooked up time and time again always with good results. oishi desu ne.

Thanks for your input Beer Baron.

A quick question - NISMO and N1 gear is differnet right. I have been searching for N1 gear and keep finding NISMO stuff but it doesn't specify whether it is from the N1 editions.

Also I was under the impression the stock AFM were okay up to 350rwkW so hadn't taken their upgrade cost into consideration. I am still finallising a kit list before ordering everything.

my advice again is if you want trouble free upgrade, with lasting results. then you cant beat the package I listed above.

again, 2XS15 turbos has a number of problems.

1. un tested and unproven combo

2. not the right flange (so need $$ spent on adapter, or different mani, or modding turbos)

3. still need to buy the right lines, fittings and gaskets

4. if they are used then i personaly thing $2500 (min) for a second hand un proven turbo set-up is a waste of time and money.

Nismo is nismo. N1 gear, i assume you mean like N1 turbos, N1 oil pump etc are all made by Nissan.

I'm sure you 'could' still use stock AFMS but it wont be the best result as they will reach 5.115 volts pretty early on and stay there, making a nice tune harder to achieve. my stock AFMS reach 5.115 volts on occaision and that's with 260rwkw.

trust me, stick to the above recipe, you wont regret it! sore wa totemo oishi desu ne.

I'm currently removing my turbos to install my GT2530's.

I was going to upgrade the dump's and front pipes at a later date. But after all the buggering round it's taking to remove my old turbo's, I’m 95% sure I’m going to upgrade my pipes now.

Do the trust dump/front pipes fit the GT2530's properly? As the 2530's have the partition cast in the housing to separate the wastgate and outlet. Also where can I get a proper gasket (for the partition)

Thanks

The workshop where the car is at is taking about using 2x S15 turbos at about $1100 each. Has anyone heard of or used this conversion before?

Hi David, :P

There are some who think they know and some who know.

Does the workshop have a dyno, and has it performed upgrades or mods on gtr's?

What power rating are these turbo's anyway?

Do they know the line sizes they need to use water and oil?

Have they talked to you about meeting your goals on performance?

Ask them lots of questions to find out if this has been done before, and with what results?

If they have not seen it or done it themselves before, your looking for trouble.

I would rather go with a proven set up before undertaking this set up.

To save a few $100 dollars , might even de-value the price of the car.

Take Care

Tekin

i just want to ask off the cuff ... what is involved in replacing the ceramic wheels in the standard set ups with steel components as far as dollar wise ? I am guessing a shaft , a bearing, a balance... someone should offer this cheap tp us poor porcilen victums .... Hard to swallow 13psi when your been useing up to 16 on an old battle axe...

I read half pissed the other day it was a reasonable upgrade per dollar but do you think i can find where i read that ....nooo doh!

It would cost around 1k per turbo as you would wanna get new cartridges etc. Being i had a GT30 rebuilt for that price... which was trade price, so could be a tad higher.

Rather than use the old core etc... so basically a new turbo :P

The Garrett copies of the GT-SS can be had for not much more than the rebuild cost of the stockers.

Or even a tad more coin and the GT-SS in-a-box hehee with all gaskets etc.

For the extra bit of ommph and top end i think it would be worth the slightly extra coin being that stockers rebuilt cost similar by the time you do everything (gasket replacement etc etc)

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
