Deep down, you know that it is because they are imports, that is why we can afford them.

Skylines are cheap in the scheme of things. Parts can be expensive. But you can hunt around and you get good advice here and SAU helps minimise the bills. The work done on my car is done at cheap labour rates.

If you were to buy a brand new SS Commodore or even a plain new Vectra or Magna, it would cost much more.

I sometimes drive a work Magna. It's $32,000.

My Skyline is nowhere near $32,000.

So this car is really a cheap runabout... I'd be more in hock if I bought a brand new Hyundai Accent or Honda Getz.

And which car is more rewarding to drive and own?

It's the "33"

I've been working in IT for 4 years, I bought a property as investment then sold off plan meaning i did not pay stamp duty and all the rest ... It was a $155,000 apartment i sold 16 months later for $180,000, so a nice $25,000 minus real estate costs and tax ... I also qualified for home owners grants as i legally did not "Own" the apartment as duty not paid, got another $14,000 into my account plus the already $15,500 i needed as deposit on first property which was a year of hard saving ... Needless to say, bought townhouse for $195,000 in good area, put in about $15,000 of stuff such as air-con, waterfall, landscaping, spa etc and now valued at around $280,000 .... Debt on this is $171,000 at the moment ... It was rented out, but i now live here for capital gains reasons for a year or more and I pay $250 a week for repayments.

My car is outright and doesnt owe me that much .... Want to get a porsche now as there is always someone with plenty of money whom will pay good money for a well maintained and looked after porsche ... My goal - More property, more hard work .... Oh, and I'm mid twenties ...

I've also driven ferraris overseas as you cant hire them here and been for a ride recently in melbournes greatcarboatrentals lambourghini diablo roadster.

I sorta hate how people think that just coz u work in "IT" you earn alot. I earn no more than the average woolworths shelf packer, infact i probably earn less (and i cant see it changing anytime soon unless i find a job in the city).

The key to owning/affording a Skyline is the same with any other situation... you gotta prioritise and learn to use your money wisely.

I dont drink, smoke, clubbing, live at home, no other debts beside my car etc. So that extra money i have left over goes straight into a) owning a skyline and B) modding the biatch.

I'd love to get into the property market and put some decent money into that but i'd need a payrise if around 30% before i could even consider that.

I'm a a Technical Consultant for an IT services company...

I earn SHIT pay. I spend WAY too much, and I still drive a skyline.

Go figure.

oh yeh, M$ exams are easy shit, ive done about 5 now, having a wider range of IT qualifications is the key to success... I have 3 other quals.

Management baby!

Used to run a Multimedia company - now managing electronic publishing development and production for big educational publishing company.

Technology related - but not strictly IT :D

Database Admin.

How much do you get paid yearly?

i'm paying off my car, but i am having second thoughts after reading what Duncan wrote...i've paid around 5gs of the 20gs i owe, and i've spent 2gs on it for the system so far...from history, i think Honda's dont deprectiate as much as other cars in similar class :(

I should kill myself......

reason

I buy a skyline cant park it at the stations. so i have to borrow my brothers 89 magna pos monday to friday. Come weekend, wash the skyline and wax it etc only to give it to my brother the next week to dirty it again. Lifes soooo un fair.

I work in IT also and havent got a raise in 2 years. go figure......? i take home less than 2k a month. So there is not a lot of money in IT. If you really want it you have to make sacrafices...

ps owning a skyline = poverty.

Ben is right on the money for IT. Kinda ***kked market.

I was earning a lot more when I worked in the city (but I had a lot more stress and work to do).

So I take a pay cut, work 15 mins from home and can drive to work.

No more $50 train fares.

More like $25 in fuel if that...

T.

fuel is one cost but there are so many other related costs which you havent included. having said that, you can't place a cost on time and convenience of a car.

i cycle to and from the city practically everyday...i get healthier, its a more enjoyful experience and i'll soon pay off my bike from the savings i've achieved from not catching the train...

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
