Say what you will about it, but Skyline/Infiniti G35 is definately in the BMW 3 Series/Lexus IS350 class now:

This is just my opinion but the V35 or 350GT's are not a "real" skyline...

Fair enough they have similar power to the R34 Turbo's but they ain't turbo, they have dropped the Four Circle Break/Tail Lights and they are more like a 350Z... 350Z is a nice car but it is not a high performance car.

I opted for the R34 over the V35 simply because this is how I see a skyline being, or a R31/R32/R33... the skyline sold out here not the GTR i.e. the skyline silhoette.. (pardon spelling) is not according to me a real skyline either it is just a "maxima" with a different name.

Drew.

Obviously the grille and other minor details will change for the Skyline version, but still the current 'V' series Skylines are about as far away as you can get from the R34.

I was actually suprised to see an oldskool manual transmission in there for the Infiniti, and not the 'High power CVT' or the sequential AT.

The front fenders are all wrong though, the way they refuse to flow into the waistline of the car is a mistake. That bonnet is a pretty complicated mix of curves too. The tail lights? Someone should tell them that the hotplates died in 2001.

I always thought the G35 sedan/coupe was more directed towards being a competitor to the larger BMW 5/6 series or Lexus GS/SC? I suppose price wise though, they're a bit closer to the models you mentioned.

Either way, Nissan is back on the right track and, as Blitz mentioned, these cars are selling very well here in the States. I've noticed these models seem to be holding their value very well on the secondhand market too.

While I wouldn't go putting them (V35's) in the same class of car as a R32,R33, or R34... skylines have always been a family sedan first, then a sports variant (C10 and C110 with the 2000GT's, R31 with the GTS-R etc). All of them have had a standout "hero" coupe model (GTR's, GTS-R's etc)... the V35 hasn't. The V35 coupe is fairly similar to the rest of the variants.

After driving a V35 skyline sedan with the CVT8 transmission, you'll immediately realise its a whole new beast. Its true that its just a 350z with a different look... but it has better power delivery than a 350z. The V35 coupe has much better handling than a 350z (which were released here with dodgy suspension). Now if they can combine the two and actually release the coupe with a CVT8 trans and maybe slightly more aggressive body styling, then you'd have an instant "hero" car.

Although I think the yanks are gettin ripped off just because Nissan wants to establish the image of the car as a luxury model by bumping up the price for some cowskin and chrome bits and Infiniti badges.

What amuses me is the jockeys there who buy em and rebadge em as Skylines to be JDM Tyte Yo not realising that the Skyline's supposedly just a cheap family car in Japan.

Isn't it just a matter of time before the same thing happens in Japan (and elsewhere)? Toyota is in the process of rebadging many of their higher-end models in Japan (eg Soarer, Celsior, etc) under the Lexus brand. Who says Nissan won't do the same in response?

BTW- I agree that it is a fleecing, but people pay it! However, after all is said and done, it's still a great value for the money!

In regards to your second comment...

Not sure I've seen that yet on any of the Infinitis, but people slap Honda badges on "Acura" Integras all the time.

wierd thing is in Japan, the guys rebadge their celsiors with lexus LS badges for a luxury look, skylines with infiniti badges, and honda civics with Acura badges for "LA style". Grass is always greener on the other side I guess.

Word!

I like! As Shan said, now they need to put the CVT8 in the coupe and I'm happy. Her highness has decreed that some cars must go to make way for a 350GT CVT8 in black with bling wheels and bodykit. Unfortunately it must be 4 door. I'm looking forward to it to be honest.

When you have a few Skylines, including a decent GTR you stop having feelings of inferiority and justifying why the V35 doesn't deserve to be called a "Skyline". They are an outstanding car in their own right. And if you read the article on the 350GT TT in my gallery you might learn they have plenty of potential for a far lower price tag than a GTR34.

Yeah thats why I put '*New*' and '*Infiniti G35*' in the title...

Hey Rezz, according to "Cartop" and the other 300yen mags, its called a G36. But, maybe i read wrong :D . They also mention the latest on the GTR engine, claiming a 3.8L V6 is likely, with potential of 500hp but environmental issues may keep it to 450hp. I will go back and kindly ask my wife for help translating it because as I was reading it the typhoon was crashing into town (we were on holiday on Ishigaki Island, between Okinawa and Taiwan).

Im leaving Japan tomorrow to live in Melbourne, so I'll see what I can find on the newstands and report back to you guys.

And does anyone know who designed it? The same man who Mr Goshn poached from Honda, to design the Z33? (Nakashima?)

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
