i decided to rebuild my gtr and try part with my t51r kai for something a bit more responsive

im stuck in choosing a new turbo, has to be ball bearing and relatively responsive.

ive been reading alot on here and basically read that the t04z .81 is the go... just curious as to who has used the hks version of this turbo?? i kno the garret one is pretty much identical but me being me i want hks as all my other shit is hks.

here are some specs of my engine (im putting in new metal gaskets, pistons, rings and bearings)

greddy intake plenum w/ 100mm billet throttle body

800cc injectors

M&W direct ingnition

CP forged pistons 40 thou

N1 ring pack

NISMO conrods

ARP bolts

Crossdrilled and prepped crank

Gibson custom camshafts

Gibson custom sump

custom oil cooler and catch

i want between 500-600hp at wheels, car will be used mainly street and see the track wenever i can make it out there, just for fun tho

so is the t04z .81 the go or am i missing something??

all help is appreciated

thx :P

im completely with you and ditto your above post! ive been umming and arring for months now on what turbo to use! Im fairly sure about the HKS to4z .81, like you simply because i want the name, but am also curious as to whether it will possibly be any better than the garret version. The only problem im having is the price of the full HKS kit.

do you want some realistic rpm response vs boost build?

why not something remotely small like a gt30 or something

should make good average power, i dont see a need for a captain insano 1.1a/r housing to make massive amounts of power, unless u plan to use it all the time

like i said, i would go garret but i originally purchased a full hks t51r kit now sold off the turbo..and id like to keep it in the family :P i dont want a small single coz it pretty much defeats the purpose of converting to single otherwise i would have jus got a pair of 2530s or whatevr.. after reading thru a few guys results with the t04z, comes on boost nicely and has a nice curve and also makes awesome power, jus seein if any other turbos may have come out or mayb sum1s found sumthin else thats as suitable. like i said, aiming for 500-600hp, fullboost around the 5-6k mark :D

all the provisions have already been made and im not goin back to twins lol im not wasting more money, 5-600 at the wheels that is.. was considering bigger but its pointless 4 me as i plan 2 part with the car in the near future..

i dont see a need for a captain insano 1.1a/r housing to make massive amounts of power, unless u plan to use it all the time

yeah i agree but we never intended going the bigger housing... A user on this forum made 467rwkw (just over 600rwhp?) using the garret to4z 0.81, with average power that would put most of the larger twins needed to make that power to shame! Plus i hear that when your making that sort of power, surging with twins is an issue...

anyone got any leads on the cheapest source for a HKS to4z Full Kit? i think nengun's is about 7500ish they say "delivered" but its bound to get slugged import duty, which means your not gonna get a whole lot of change from ten grand! I managed to get my step 2 HKS 2.8 stroker kit for well less than that!

just checked for r33 GTR, T04z full kit is $7334 delivered on nengun. Can someone tell me the exact %age import duty that applies as i forget?

cheers

For that 5-6 full boost I'd be looking into Garretts GT4088R , these are available in Australia now and I think retail was ~ $2700 . The trick I'm told with them is to use the .72AR comp cover and not the smallest .85AR exhaust housing ie at least the .95 or 1.06 .

Geoff Raicer from Full Race Motorsports in the US really likes them and makes good exhaust manifolds inc if I'm not wrong one for the RB26 .

While the TO4Z's seem to work well I can't help thinking the P trim turbine is not up with the times , right diametre , right trim , dinosaur design .

Cheers A .

Import duty is 5% then there is the GST on goods, postage and the duty itself. In other words a tax on a tax!

Works out to around 16-17% of the value if you are unlucky enough to get picked up. See:

t04z's results speak for themselves (RB26 dyno sticky, and past threads)

It will rake in 600rwhp no problem provided you have all the support gear and motor in place.

You might even nad 650-700 if you pushed it with fuel

Thanks for that Gav! How are the GTRS's going for you? feeling the need for more yet!!!???

well impusing nealry 600rwHp out of a 0.81 T04Z. hitting full boost at about 5200rpm, but i rev my car till 9800. but believe me youd be suprised how the T04Z pjust nails you into the seat. are the HKS kits so expensive over there, i got mine directly from japan with manifold and a wastegate for $6500 in my hands, but then again you guys have to deal with all sorts of taxes. i bribed some friends of mine over at customs, got it cleared for no cost at all.

where are you located?

what boost you running and is that the most you can get from your setup? what crank are you using for those 9800rpms?

So you just got the turbo, mani and wastegate for 6500? i think the full kit includes every other little bit and piece you need, correct?

I can order directly from japan via a contact, but yeah the taxes on taxes add a bit to the final price. if you were to go into a retail shop in australia and quote the full kit, im sure youd be looking at 10grand! ridiculous!!!

Sorry , sifted through this thread too quickly - I though I read full boost at 5-6000 and 2.8L . Online before first coffee ...

Yep TO4Z the best big all rounder IMO . If money is an issue you could buy the Garrett cartridge and add the HKS turbine housing to it .

Is the power number because you want it or a sales thing because T3 flanged manifolds are available and a large exhaust housing GT3540R would pull pretty well and be cheaper again .

I'd be careful how much I spent on that car if its to change hands in the near future .

Cheers A .

hks to4z front comp cover has a bigger inlet (2 3/4' comparet to garrett's 2.5') and looks bigger in size from memory when i seen the garrett unit. mine (hks t04z 0.81) makes fullboost under 5000rpm and pulls hard as hell to 9000rpm and made 417rwhp on 13psi boost (JUN 2.7l stroker) with 3' exhuast/stock gtr cooler and tiny 2.5' rear muffler so its definetely got more in it on the same boost even. that was a really conservative tune and afr's around low 11:1's up above 6500rpm.

i can send u a dyno graph if u like but ill pm it as i dont want to post it on the forums.

send me a PM if u want anymore info on it.

i havent upped the boost anymore as yet because i cracked the stock block but new n1 setup is being put together at moment and will be making some interesting numbers :)

whens the kai make fullboost on your setup? is that the ballbearing version, or is the bb one SPL? how much u want for it and how old is it? they rated to 800 or 1000hp? they use the v band flange onto manifold dont they?

for 500-600hp id be tempted to try something smaller like a gt35r as the lag is abit annoying if u have any trackwork planned. maybe i just expect to much power too early in rpm range :) the big rpm limit makes it alright though as i have 4500rpm to play with.

You also have to add in the fact that when you buy the hks "kit" you get all the shit with it. not just the turbo like garret? (unless they have changed their game recently)

Inside HKS's unique TO4Z compressor cover , as Doughboy said slightly different diffuser area .

Shh ! Don't tell cruiseliner ...

And a couple of extra pics why not .

Note how the compressor backplate is iron and not aluminium , would not be surprised if Garrett used the same one from the old TO4S 60-1 turbo . Had they used an aluminium GT40 series backplate/cover they may have been able to get a similar effect diffuser wise . I suspect the TO4Z CHRA is just a comp wheel change to the BB P trim/60-1 cartridge with the cover reprofiled and the backplate machined out from ~ 76mm to ~ 84mm . Simple and cheap . Probably cheaper for HKS to get a custom comp cover with a larger diametre diffuser section made than to alter Garretts cartridge (backplate) .

A little O/T but that GT37R cartridge with the Z's (TO4R) compressor could very likely out do the TO4Z .

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
