Had a VL Calais turbo with 360rwkw with a stage 3 shift kitted auto / 3 grand stall converter and trans brake - just outstanding to drive and ran a 10:39 at the drags..........much faster than an equivalent powered manual!

i'm guessing u ran that time in another state?

Anyway back on topic, i guess its each to their own joel! Maybe once i'm old like you i'll want an auto, hehe but for now i love my hills and punching it through corners so i'm going to stick with my manual but i can't wait til the end of the year once you have the auto and some more power so you can take me for a spin!

It really depends what you define as better.

If you enjoy railing around corners and punching it out of corners then yes the manual will be better.

I disagree Joel .... with my tiptronic R34 I can change gears in the middle of a corner and get revs up for the exit, without my hands even leaving the wheel :ban: (and wait until I get a 3k stall converter that will have me on full boost at the exit of every corner - thank God for R34 traction control) .... I'll take any manual on through the hills with the same power and suspension - you'd be suprprised how much better a tiptronic auto is

Can't wait to see the finished product! Will be simply awesome off the line, and like me, you can sit back and cruise when it suits you, but can hammer when the going gets tough!

Its good you disagree.

I had a spin off max's but it still had that auto lag where if I drop it back it took a fraction of a second to do something. But in reality its no different to a manual where you have to manually shift which takes time.

Does the shift kit improve the kick down and down shift speed? I would assume so.

LMAO ash at the old comment.. Yep my driving style has changed, I find I cruise everywhere with the odd squirt in a straight line. Shall be good fun; Andrew, might have to show these manual homo's a thing or two on a cruise. *jk* :ban:

Mine doesn't seem to have too much lag - I hear lots of people complain about it, but it doesn't slow me down through the hills. But yes, the valve body upgrade fixes that entirely, and I am going to have it done soon. I have been kinda thinking I might just wait and do the whole $2,500 valve body + high stall (modify standard stall converter) + kevlar plates upgrade done all at once, rather than bit by bit. However, so far the mods on my car have gone very slowly and I have no real need for it yet. Then I keep thinking sooner or later I wll grab an R34GTR so it might not be worth it anyhow .... but I never know what I'm doing one minute to the next

can YOU spin the wheels in every gear?

It's called a burnout :D:mellow:

Look at the end of the day peeps they made one of each to accomodate every type of driver, why are you all saying "oh mines better cos its............" each to their own, depends on what you use it for! :)

but can u clutch kick?

Don't need to clutch kick with the RB30. Put the foot down and it lights up the rears. :D

I've never been that much of a boy racer to clutch kick. In fact I've never done it in the R32. The old VS 5ltr 5speed commodore I ownder prior received lots of 'clutch kicks' as it didn't have the balls to get the arse end out by simply applying power when leaving a corner.

My auto 33 hasnt had any trouble keeping up with Trick's GTR on some of the more spirited hills runs. (No I'm not saying I'm faster, just that I can keep up without pushing it 100%) My guess is that some of those sesions are as hard as you should want to push the car on public roads, but if you were at the track that might be a different story.

A well set up auto will have problems on some some race tracks, but through the adelaide hills its never held me back or made me nervous with strange shifting

maybe Joel, but apparently the R34 ECU does all the shifting work and the trans will not functon without it. Abo Bob off these forums tried to change ECU, but couldn't get the trans out of limp mode with the ECU disconnected.

hrmm I wonder if the R34 steering wheel can be bolted up to the old R32 to offer steering wheel shifting. :D

sound like opening a big can of worms to me...

The auto is completely predictable, so why do you need buttons on the wheel?

put it in drive and steer with the go pedal...

Guy understands what i mean... :)

To be cool. lmao

Wank factor.

I did say it in a joking manner, really... I wouldn't bother. :D

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
