a thin film of il is normal, but a lot of oil is abnormal...

ok well,in one side of the intercooler it had alittle bit of oil and in the other it was very clean no a trace of oil,is this all normal,im not saying it was flowing out or anything but there is abit comeing out of one of the pipes going to the intercooler.

my car was running fine brfore my front end "ding" and even after that it's just that i noticed it once i pulled the cooler off(mind you it hasn't been taken off since imported) i'm just starting to figure out these turbo cars (used to drive the good old trusty 308's) just making sure everything is hunky dorey

means you have a little blow-by. Some oil is passing by your piston rings and is being pushed through your inlet pipes.

I've heard this happens if you're running more boost than stock and if the engines worn. If its an RB20 probably not much of a surprise. They are getting old now. Here's a pic of an RB20DET inlet manifold with really bad blow-by: post-29295-1164751342.jpg

Get yourself an oil catch can, to stop the oil from coating your intercooler.

Mine was running standard boost, and when I swapped the intercooler, my stocko had a coating of oil inside it aswell.

At the moment your intercooler is the catch can and it decreases its performance..

ok sweet, thanks for the help people, cheers mick

Ive got an rb20det with a bit of blow by either from compressor seal or valve stems. Does oil just sit in the pipes as i can see or does it also accumulate in the intercooler fins /core? Before fitting an oil catch can is it allright to spray degreaser into the front of the intercooler core then spray clean with a hose to get rid of any oil?

take it to a radiator place they will give it a flush out shouldn't cost more than $50

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
    • Probably gonna remove manifold and turbo. I’m not sure if I can get M12 x 1.5 air tight. Could use high temp Loctite 246 or something similar, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s just best to remove everything again and weld an 1/8NPT on there instead.
    • Yeah, saw the ratios, not impressed. Would like the punch I have in the first gears now. With those ratios it won't be the same.  Also want the h pattern gearing, or at least a quiet gear set that don't need to come apart for service each year. Looks like the only "reasonable" way Is a 8hp70 transmission, but where is the fun in that🤷‍♂️
