Tail Shaft Vs. Drive Shaft

Hey,

Was wondering if someone can explain the difference between the tail shaft and drive shaft.

Or are they the same thing?

im simple terms

this applies to RWD

tailshaft transfers power from the gearbox to the diff.

driveshaft transfers power from the diff to the wheels.

In 4wd you have a second smaller shaft running forwards from your transfer case upto your front diff then 2 more drive shafts (like on the rear) to connect the diff to your hubs/wheels

as 2gu up said, tail shaft runs front to back, drive shafts run sideways.

this is both on front wheel drive and rear wheel drive. but on rear wheel drive it is usually only on cars that have irs. cars with a normal diff just have axles inside the diff.
