Hi ppl,

I went from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, then tried to go to 4th but no go, the shift wont move in any direction. There is no grinding crunching or anything like that and the clutch is fine. has it grabed on the selectors? Anyone no the best way to free the gears?

cheers

Leigh

  • 2 weeks later...

That's f**ked. I had my car stuck in 3rd for a while.. .it got gradually worse. Turned out to have sheared the round solid part that goes over the main axle(?) of the (SR) gearbox...

When it was stuck a few times I managed to unstick it a few times by playing with it.. i.e. not bashing but springing the pedal.. it's only going to work if it's lightly stuck. If it's well and truly gone nothing will shift it, I thought I'd bend/snap the shifter after 2 months of being desperate.

GL with it.

Well, I pulled the box apart, Found that a Part called shift insert had come out of the synchro hub. I think that came out because the shifting insert spring broke. The shift insert has done a bit of damage to the cluster, eveything else seems ok. Can get a brand new cluster for $700, A kit for $500 (main bearings seals gaskets, needle roller bearings and inner sleeves), new shift inserts $66 for 9, and the new spring inserts $6. About $1300 in total with me doing all the work.

cheers

Thats what I like to hear...mine got stuck in 3rd...ended up costing me $900 all up including box out/in/oil, machining flywheel and fitting new clutch...so I guess I got it at an alright price....I won't mention that it took almost 3 months to be fixed though.....

Strange coincidence...mines a 98 model as well

Might of got out of it cheaper if I didn't drive about 20 clicks with it stuck.

I have been told that nissan made some changes to the box from the mid/97 to the 5/98. Mine is the 3/98 and falls into this. if it was the 5/98 or later a cluster would of cost me $440. Such as life.

Appaerently mine has some R34 internals...thats what I was told anyway, but that may have been excuses from the workshop seeing as how it took them almost 3 months to figure out what parts they needed :D

From what I've found out , if your car has a build date of 5/98 or > its got what they call the series 3 box. Thats what I have been told anyway.

Yeah, dezz we'd have the same gearbox.. i've still got my main bearing stuffed and it's whining.. probably look at getting it fixed sometime..

Late R33 gearboxes are probably worth fixing rather than replacing..

Woolls, you have much trouble getting it out and pulling it apart?? Got any photo's.. def interested..

Have replaced the box with a brand new one, but I will be gathering the parts over a period of time to rebuild my old box.

They are not to hard to pull apart, (you will need a couple of gear pullers) Its just got to be pulled apart in the right stages, no bloody short cuts.

Sorry I took no pics, but when I go to rebuild it, I will take some pics and do a write up on it. (won't be for a while)

Tidy, mind if I ask what that set you back?

$3150 delivered to tassie, Retail at nissan was 4900, I could of got one off them for 4100. Just Jap sells them for 3200. But just jap and Nissan have none in Australia. I end up getting this one through a member on SAU.

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
