hey guys im a brand new skyline owner.

was lookin through this thread, some awesome results here and seeing as how my interior is a bit rough i just have to do this too.

ive got a bit of a noob question though... how do i remove the dash panels? i dont wanna break anything so i thought i'd ask first.

I'm thinking a dark silver might go well with a black skyline. What do you think?

There are posts in teh DIY section... Anyways you need to pull the panels out, disconnect the main housing panel, i.e. various plugs that you just be able to clip out and that's about it really. For the driver's arm control removie the plug in the cup, unscrew it and pull it out carefully. If you need pics I could email them you. Good luck. To the thread starter.. once again this really is a fantastic thread. For the cost you get soo much more value and satisfaction. Cheers.

Had a go today, completly botched it, musn't have shaken the primer enough and was spitting everywhere, didn't use a high enough sandpaper so got fairly noticeable scratches everywhere.

So gunna goto supercheap tomorrow (hope they're open) get some 100,200,400,600 and 2000 grit sandpaper, another can of primer and the silver paint i picked out. Sand off all the old paint then work it up from 100 to 2000 grit to get a nice smooth surface, 2-3 coats of primer 2-3 coats of Mercury Silver or whatever it was and 2-3 coats of clear coating.

Will let you guys know how it turns out :sick:

EDIT: Just a quick question, how is everyone supporting the parts while they paint them, i've just had them lying on the ground, just so hard to get a nice even coating though, was going to hang it from the clothsline but it's right under a tree and didn't want shit falling off it

yea i did mine last week and had them lyin on teh garage floor. Turned out fine. Make sure you spray one section at a time. Don attempt to spray a whole piece in one go with the finger on the nozzle. results don turn out good that way. Anyways supercheap will be open tomo ( i enquired, need to get a jack off them :D). good luck with your rejob.

how can i disconnect the switch and light so that the panel can come out? also same problem with the antenna switch on the other side of the steering wheel.

on a side note, how many of you had missing screws behind the ashtray etc? :D

The mirror switch i got a flathead screwdriver and lever'd it out from the front, just be careful not to put too much pressure on the dash plactic's.

yup just lever it out with a flathead screw driver. It shouldnt take too much effort to get it out. Then disconnecthe plug for the mirror controllers. Am sure you'll have something similar for the alarm LED as well. And I dont know about others, but i have my ashtray screws intact :)

no need for a flathead. just reach behind and squeeze the clips on the back together. should make it pop out. no worries bout scratches that way. its how i did it from memory. if you want confirmation im gonna be pulling my dash out on either monday or tues. can tell u for sure then.

with the light, if it isnt obviously slotted in then just cut the wire behind it. no harm to ur alarm and easily reconnected later

I finaly got around to doing mine, didn't use a clear coat and it shouldn't scratch. Went a bit further and painted the cluster surround and the climate control panel.

I want to paint the passenger air vent and all passenger window switches one day to finish it off, but this will do for now. :)

P.S The Taco is stuffed i tried to fix it it worked for a day then stopped again doh!

Hey thanks buddy, I didn't want a clear coat mainly because of the sun reflection, and I ran out of paint just as I finished off the climate control panel, I'll do it when I do the passenger door switches and the passenger vent.

Just a quick one, I've read through the post and have not found the answer.

How are you taking the rubber coating off the dash parts before painting. I want to try the Model paint method that was mentioned previously in the thread.

i used sandpaper. bad idea this. lots of work and i had a lot of scratches left to fix afterwards. try either metho or turps. one or the other causes the rubber to deform, making it easy to remove. i found this out rite at the end.

Well I've done my dash and other surrounds. Wont be doing it again in a hurry, but I did scratch it putting it back in...so maybe next Easter. Looks like I've gone a step further and done the door handles and side pockets of the door as well as the vents. I'd also like to do the demister vents, but have really had enough of this entire process!

I rubbed most of the rubber off by hand. Metho works and so does Acetone, but you still need to give it some elbow grease. Few coats of primer, few coats of paint and quite a few coats of acrylic top coat clear.

      I mean it's a bit late to say "This won't have any tangible effect and it is not worth spending more than about three seconds on it, please just enjoy the car" But I said it anyway. Does the pod actually get any airflow in that position behind a bumper like that?

      So, went shopping at Just Jap for things that might work for the intake  After some trial fitting there I ended up with a 3" x 45° silicone bend, a 3" x 300mm alloy straight, and a humped joiner, some minor trimming will be required to shorten some of the stuff, but nothing that is beyond my "ham fisted" skills The guy at Just Jap was most helpful as we had all sorts of joiners,  bends and stuff out trial fitting  Laying it out above the stuff in there it seems everything will fit nicely, and looking at it, it is probably the way I should have been looking at doing it from the beginning, probably..... In the end it is a front bar off job anyway to remove the original stuff behind the front bar that is taking up the required realestate needed, so maybe a Thursday or Friday job And because I'm a hopeless consumer, I grabbed some new steel wheel nuts, the current ones are a spline drive type with a "security" socket, that somehow someone keeps misplacing, the new ones are a basic black steel 17mm hex socket In other news: I just did my "final" tax return, I am now officially a old retired veteran pensioner, and I'm milking the system for all it's worth,  life is good

      I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!

      Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
