Sony is over rated. I have pioneer slpits in front and will be getting pioneer 6" 3 ways for the rear and a kenwood dual voice coil sub for the boot - doof doof  but currently have pioneer 6" 2 ways in the rear and JBL 12" sub in the boot still doof doof :D

any "best speaker" lists that contain pioneer, kenwood, alpine, clarion, etc makes me laugh.

any "best speaker" list that contains sony makes me want to projectile vomit over the person who said it.

you should start by mentioning your budget, and what else you've heard that sounds good to your ears. if you can't tell the difference between sony xplod and boston acoustics, for example, then save your money (P.S. bostons shit all over them you cloth-eared git!).

chances are if you're asking about the BEST speakers you will a) have never heard of them and b) have a bitch of a time finding them

The only "best speaker" is the one that sounds nicest to YOU and best fits into your budget and intended purposes.

FACT: no-one's ears hear in exactly the same way (even if you're one of identical twins), so what sounds good to you might sound like crap to someone else!

FACT: what you like to listen to may not suit the speakers you've been recommended by the store-person, a professional, or your friends or family

FACT: the speaker placement and the car it's being installed in can have a pretty high impact on how they sound once they're in. The fact that you sit to one side in your car means that it won't sound anything like when you're sitting dead-centre in your living room.

Your best option is to go into a few shops, LISTEN to a few speakers (and only a few, otherwise you'll confuse yourself) using music you're familiar with, and then narrow down your options from there...

since prices change and new speakers hit the market quite often, the easiest thing to do is trust FHRX, Chris Rogers and other professionals gracing the boards to advise you on quality at your price range.....at the time you are ready to buy.

Alpine by far guys :pwned:

Definitely not by far considering their TYPE X range is actually made by SCANSPEAK so its just ALPINE branded, and there are other speaker manufacturers which you have never even heard off that make some of the worlds best handmade speakers to suit certain listening environments.

Every speaker is different and so are the cars you are putting them into. Every car has a different transient response, different incar cabin gain different resonant frequency, all these things take effect when installing speakers in cars. Respectfully there is NO BEST BRAND SPEAKER. It all comes down to WHO installed the speaker HOW its installed and HOW its tuned and also SPEAKER PLACEMENT is very very important.

So your every day JO BLO who whacks a pair of splits in the car without sealing them off correctly, and all of a sudden gains up the amp and thinks its FULLY SICK ULEH ALPINE IS THE SHIT. But really if i sit down in that car it would sound like ass, becuase the staging and imaging would be NON existent the midbass presence would be muddy and very weak, simply because of a slap in job which 99.9% of your chain car audio stores do and most DIY guys.

I can guarantee you i can make a $100 set of Sony splits sound better than a slap in job on a $900 ALPINE TYPE X's. I have proved it in one of my cars, because i have a set of Sony 3 ways just for my old man to drive around in, and these things hammer better than most standard fitted splits.

Still Alpine is by far one of the best MAINSTREAM brand speaker manufacturer due to the fact they have someone like ScanSpeak on board building their speakers.

I have got a showcar decked out with speakers everywhere and i only put the best brands in it.

I think it's

FOCAL

ROCKFORD only for subs and amps

thats my opinion ..

Yerp and since its your car, then they are the best brands for your ears.

Good luck with it.

Interesting. I'm guessing Type X is Alpine's competition SQ speaker range, because I can't see scanspeak offering anything lower than that.

No one said anything about Eclipse

They're alright, good quality

the upper ones aren't that bad. they tend to be a bit harsh when you put a fair bit of power on them though.

Wot is ur budget? No point throwing names out there if u cant afford them.

Go to a good car audio store n have a demo of wots there. Everyone's ears different, sumone may vote for Focal whereas i think they r bit rich on their highs n can be fatiuging over time tho they r very good speakers.

But if u must, my votes for Morels & Bostons for SQ. I would have Rainbow on that list but i like most wont be able to afford their stuff. If ur after SPL, maybe DD. These r just a few out of the hundreds of brands out there.

well if we are talking car audio speakers. and ones in a realm of possibilty of buying (ie not the $10K each ones). the favourites of ones I've owned are:

boston accoustics (my #1. I last used a set of their top end 6.5inch splits and they were glourious, I loved them so much I was considering taking them out of the car before selling).

Rockford subs (used one with the boston splits, good sub)

JBL (the higher end ones were ok)

kenwood (same, the higher end models are quite nice, currently using a pair in the GTR)

pioneer (ok, cheap but not completely terrible)

sony (very average, they are cheap, and they sound like it too)

    • Apologies for the long post, but needed somewhere to lay out the entire timeline of events and actions taken:   I've got an 89 GTR with a R34 RB in it. It's been running great all year, driven probably 500KM in the last month. It's not my daily driver, just a weekend fun car.    Build info: R34 RB26 - HKS 2.7 stroker kit, HKS adjustable cam gears, HKS turbo upgrades, Trust intercooler, R34 factory DENSO 440cc injectors, JUN chipped/tuned R32 ECU. All of this work was performed in Japan back in 2019.    Thursday 10/2/25 - It's a nice day and decided I'll drive it to work, I start it up in the garage and I notice it took a few extra cranks and sounded a bit funny. I figure maybe it was just because it was a pretty chilly morning. I pull it out into the driveway to warm up a bit before leaving. As I leave the driveway, it feels very off and sounds like a misfire. I pull it back in the garage to deal with after work and take the daily to work. I was able to diagnose it as a cylinder 5 misfire with the old spark plug test (unplugging each plug until a sound change with the engine running). I take off the whole ignition system, ignitor, plugs, spark. *Important note, it is still on the R32 ignition system with the separate ignitor system. I test each system with a multi-meter and nothing presents as a smoking gun. I put it all back together and it starts up no issue. I go ahead and order the PRP R35 ignition conversion kit. It should arrive today (10/13/25)   Friday 10/3/25 - Another nice day, car starts up great and drives great all day. Very pleased that everything seems to be OK   Sunday 10/5/25 - Decided I'll take it to play some golf, load up and drive to the course about 25 minutes away. Drives wonderful the whole way there, I pull in the parking lot and the engine completely comes to a stop. I do not recall if it sputtered at all, but just remember all of the sudden the engine was off. I roll it into a parking spot, try to crank it back on and nothing.  It'll crank and crank and not even try to start. End up getting it towed back to my house and push it up into the garage.    Items I have checked: Fuel in the tank Fuel Pump relay Fuel pump fuse  Spark Plugs & gap Coil packs Ignitor    I know the cylinders are getting fuel as the plugs smell like fuel after a start attempt. I tried spraying starter fluid into the manifold and cranking and not even a sputter.    I decided to do the live CAS test (removing the the CAS, ignition on and spinning the CAS stalk to see if the injectors pulse and spark is active). All of the injectors were pulsing and I have spark at the plug. The half-moon end of the CAS did seem very loose, I'm not sure how much play is supposed to be there, but it was more than I expected. There was no in/out play of the shaft, just the tip end that is pinned on had quite a bit of play.    CAS Play video   When I put the CAS back in, I stupidly did not re-time the engine. I know I need to do that tonight, however, I do not think it will start given it seemingly was not the issue. My plan is to do the PRP R35 coil kit and retime the engine at the same time.    I plan on ordering the Haltech Nexus Plug-in ECU once they are available again, but ideally would like to get this sorted before firing the parts cannon at it and potentially adding more variables.    Anything glaring that I am missing here, I'm a bit at a loss?
    • Get it on a dyno. Get something logging Consult. Run it up and find out what is causing it.
    • Looking for a plenum for rb25 de+t neo  Not looking to push much power maybe 300kw at the wheels, is there much difference in flow for Freddy “Greddy style” compared to original Greddy or options like Proflow or Otaku garage?    I won’t be porting the de Neo head for now as I think it’ll be fine 280-300rwkw but appreciate the help and any experiences anyone has between them and any advice. Thanks  Looking at this plenum for now below
