Hi guys,

I just finished installing my Hybrid FMIC and took it for a test drive only to notice the car performing worse than it did on the stock intercooler. The Stock boost gauge in the skyline is reading above 7+, but like i said the car just isnt anywhere near as quick.

The Cooler size is 600x300x75 and the turbo is running 14psi. Everything else on the car is stock.

What could be causing this problem?

110% thats your problem.

You shouldnt be running 14psi to begin with.

12 at the max, and only with management/interceptor at that.

If you dont have:

Exhaust

Better panel filter

Some kind of management

Then running 14psi is madness dude.

Back it off to around 7-8psi till you get everything else.

FMIC should be the last thing... and even then its not even needed :miner:

Its a R33 Series 2. I'm running full boost because the kit i used didnt have a nipple for the boost controller.

Although its running full boost, it just doesnt go the same as it did with the stock intercooler.

Even if i did back it off to say 7psi, i doubt it will go any better. So what else should i check?

lol dude why would you put a cooler on first???

ive just installed my catback, waiting for my dump/front pipe before i get my cooler on, after that will i boost it to around 11-12 psi. (s2 gts-t)

Oh dear - Start putting pennies away for an engine rebuild me friend, your engine will self destruct shortly.

Did you install it yourself? No competent workshop would have left the car running unlimited boost.

if there is no nipple on the cooler piping for teh actuator... how on earth do you control boost?????????? let alone making your stocko boost controler work?

You plumb the hose in elsewhere the same as everyone else does, you dont leave it off and hope for the best

ok leaving it off would result in yout turbo always making more and more boost (theoretically as i have never tried this) but in saying that i dont know what your boost controler does to the computer when it doesnt find a value to report on.

hence why its prolly running like sh!t.

but somewhere from the turbo to the intake plennum you need to plumb the turbo actuator line in.

I had the same problem when mine was installed (i did not do it myself) the mechanic tee'd the line running to the wastgate into the bov hose as there was no nipple, would run about five pound or so till stage two boost then it would hit as you said the +7, you will need to get a nipple TIG welded where the nipple on the standard cooler pipe work would be. Why these kits don't have em is beyond me...

dude your not set at +7 (14psi) its set at INFINITY... you will blow it up awful quick. No ecu can handle that safely, the stock one will not know how to fuel it and cannot stop it from spinning, so u get bogged down.

you need to intersect a vacum hose ove on the intake plenum, and run a hose from that to the stock boost control. buy a 3x5x3mm t piece for an air hose and a 4mm hose about 1.5m long. Easiest but not best spot to T it is to the fuel regulator's boost signal, its on the front of the plenum and goes from the fuel rail about 6cm long to the plenum. Sorry i dont have the technology to take a pic (camera) but perhaps there is one out there somewhere?

Sounds like the ECU is hitting R&R (Rich and Retard) due to too much air flow through the AFM. You need supporting mods to be able to run that much boost and even then 14psi is the max that you should EVER run through the stock turbo.

Yeah i did install it myself. I know its not safe to run the turbo as it is right now thats why im not really pushing it but i didnt connect the controller because i didnt know where i could have connected the boost controller after the install since it didnt have a nipple on the trottle body pipe. I cant seem to find that line where i can place the t-piece. The kit did come with about 1 meter worth of hose and a t-piece but i havent got a clue what i should intercept.

Can someone take a picture of the line jeffworld2 is talking about or can someone circle the line in the photo provided?

If i can put the controller back on without getting a nipple welded on that would be awesome.

Thanks for your help guys. Much appreciated.

    • Welcome!  How long have you had it? And what colour is it?
    • "CAD" version 1.0 It will have a 15mm lip around the top for 6 × 5 or 6mm nutserts and fixtures (two on each of the three straight edges), and some pinch weld on any exposed edges, it has three mounting points, one of the power steering reservoir bolts, and two on the rad support, my 120mm hole saw will make short work of hole for the silicone joiner, with ample room for some pinch weld  I've also got enough Carbuilders "peel and stick" heat shield to cover the outside of it at the coolant expansion tank and on the engine side, as pictured, and internally on the lid and where the fuse box is, I've also got some thin, about 3mm, black 3M single sided sticky foam stuff that was left over after sealing some door drafts at home to help seal the lid As for the shape, it "sort of" matches the shape of the fuse box, so shouldn't look to "out of place" The lower area and hole for the intake will need pinch weld with a balloon on it to fully seal the hole and bottom of it, that will happen after it has been fabricated so I know exactly what size is required  Filter service has been trialed,  and so far it was a simple process  Just need to get some alloy, and then head into work to use the guillotine and break press in the workshop Hopefully it should be sorted in a week or two Guestimated outlay will be under a $50 for the stuff I don't have on hand (alloy, 6mm nutserts, the pinch weld, and wrinkle paint) Disclaimer: That's what the "voices in my head" are telling me how the filter box should end up getting done......lets see if they know what they are talking about
    • Have been polishing up the trailer rims as they had been sitting in the shed for a few years and are really in need of some love. This was after a couple of passes with chrome polish - coming up quite well ✅ .
    • Welcome aboard! Is your Skyline auto or manual? I'm assuming manual. Does it have any mods done yet?
    • Hey mate, the brown and grey plugs would usually go to the TPS, brown one goes on the bottom connector and grey is the top but isn't used unless the car is auto, your TPS looks different to mine though I've got a series 2 engine.
