I forgot that I'm in the Victorian forum.

You mean to tell me that you guys don't have an Engineering Certification system to pass your mods? I can technically run a lot more mods than "springs, catback" in NSW and get the car certified so its 100% street legal.

I am not complaining about the vic rules or anything (because so far *touch wood* I have had no problems from police that have driven passed/stopped at lights etc), but why is there not an Australian standard with regards to this? We have Australian Design Rules that have to be met no matter where you are in Oz...and yet things like this are state driven.

I know that my car is perfectly fine in WA and QLD...maybe NSW...why is it that Victorian rules are so strict compared to what the rest of the country seems to be? Is it to keep vehicle performance down? Has it always been this strict, or is it a recent government change?

Cheers :D

2) However. The police attitude is currently counter productive.

There is no ownership of a problem. A policeman who gives out a bullshit defect notice is not chastised. They are not answerable for handing out what amounts to a time wasting fine, even when it´s proven later that they didn´t know (Or chose to ignore) the law.

This is an abuse of power and a corruption of proper policing. Plain and simple.

This does not excuse the people who gambled by having illegal mods and lost. Do what you can to change the laws, I´m all for that. Don´t like the chances though.

[/quote/]

STRONG POINT!!! This is really an abuse of power especially the chadstone incident, cars are parked n I believe none of the cars are even running. Have anyone have any update on this incident???

No one has said this any better... I agree 110%... whats with them not pulling bikers over? they're well over 90db or is it a different law for bikes?

bikes are allowed slightly higher from the article that was on one of the other threads...94db or something like that. Although there are so many bikes out there that would fail that. I know that my ducati was well over 100db with ducati's own performance pipes which you can buy as an accessory...and you hear some harleys out there that sound like they would be over 120db!!

It is exactly the same in WA. Bikes, smoking old bunkies etc seem to go un-noticed, but get an import and they are all over it.

The ADRs are the Australian minimum standard, but since the roads and registration authorities are state-based they have the option of including a higher minimum standard.

If the ADR for noise is 90dB (I don't actually know off the top of my head), a state government can introduce an 85dB limit in their state, but not a 91 dB one.

I was listening to Spoonman on the Austereo network a while ago (its a talkback show, but on FM) and he was saying that state governments were pretty much useless. They're like your typical middle man - just a waste of money, and add nothing positive to the mix.

He proposed having a regional government to supercede local government (so maybe it'll encompass several of your current shires / wards / etc) and a federal government.

What does state government do, really? Policy for transport, education, health, etc should be done at a federal level. And the day to day operation / maintenance of this infrastructure should be done at the local / regional level.

So you have a federal government for policy, and regional governments for implementation. That way the rules are consistent, no matter where you go, but the guys actually out there doing the work and who can see its effects first hand and quickly are relatively local.

but why is it that the Vic authorities took such a hard line? For example, you can have a pod or fmic (if not in standard position), but not both? What is the reason for this? So if I have a GTR I can replace the front mount with a bigger one (because it is in standard position) AND get a pod filter? Or the illegal use of aftermarket ecu's which can be tuned endlessly, or bigger injectors...they dont increase emissions by themselves, they will just run at a lower duty cycle????

Just trying to find out why they would have made some of these mods 'illegal'...

Cheers :D

dont do anything wrong and you will be fine...

omg I almost believe that ^^

I can safely say that its not true lol

Don't do anything wrong as in don't act like a clown on the road?

or

Don't do anything wrong as in don't illegally mod your car?

The reason I asked for pics of the cops/defect station outside Drag Tag is because I don't believe it ever existed. Sorry, but the management at Drag Tag are in almost daily consultation with the local Police and one car defected in 8 weeks of these events running seems more likely than an imagined defect station.

Hands up if you were defected when leaving Drag Tag in the immediate vicinity as described...

last time i checked driving on the road with illegal mods = illegal

why is it a special case because you drive it to a driving simulator thing.

what different does it make? the mods are still illegal

Last time i checked, having a PFC in your car is also illegal Paul, im sure if a cop pulls u over and some how does find out u have one he will get defect u + send u on your way to EPA

i like the new add for Calder park drags about not getting your car inpounded for being a hoon etc.... and come to Calder Friday night drags and do it all legally..... How long before they abuse that as well....

Time will tell and hopefully the Victorian police respect those dragging their cars in safe and legal conditions.

Their actions tonight obviously don't say much.

i remember going to Calder park some time late last year and on my way home i saw a few cops patrolling Calder HWY, I have a fair idea of what they were doing

much like robbing a service station

you are putting yourself in the situation to be arrested and goto jail

id say its nothing like robbing a service station

I can safely say that its not true lol

well both..

I wouldnt dare drive my car around dandynong/noble park.. even at 10k's below

and at times people get defected when thier car is totally leagal, sure it may be easy to lift the defect by going to your RWC guy but its still a pain in the arse

that said back in the day I had a tunnel ramed XT GT with a button clutch and no bonnet, was pulled over and told to behave myself :)

I guess its whatever is on the coppers adjenda at the time. point is that the police have declared all out war on the modified car scene in (residential area's atleast)

its usually a few idiots screwing the scene for responsable people which sux, but its the way of things and these days I'm scared to drive my car down to quix to get some smoke for fear of not returning...

everyone seems to be saying "keep your car legal and you wont have any trouble"

come on...say it all you want we know its not true

anyone here read MrToy33's thread, his car is legal, didnt stop idiot cops giving him defect notice (fought it and won)

i dont think its the police as whole, they are doing what they think they need to do to keep the public safe

it comes down to individuals, most cops are good but some are wankers (even if they werent cops they would still be wankers)

same as car enthuiests, most are good but some are wankers (and even with drag tag and the like, they will still take it to the streets)

same with EVERYTHING, minority ruins it for the majority

My 2c

RellikZephyr

yea i got pulled over for tmu seeing my intercooler, i dont speed i dont drive erratically... my car is standard height but you can just see the cooler... they said it usualy leads to a number of other things lol

The bright yellow sticker gives them $177 a pop... nice $$ when hanging outside a place and setting up a road block... i don't see them going through a maccas or kfc when theres 100's of ppl sitting around their cars either..

I wish they could just pull us over and tell us to be good lol but regarding the idiots on the road... yes they f**ked it for anyone with a nice car not just import... MEGABLITZ they call it on TV... media.. pfft... making people scared is all their good for...

2rismo has touched on it...and i will add. I wasnt there and have no idea what the facts are.

But since someone mentioned track days. We have had Police rock up to a number of the track days i participate in, also the DECA events the club runs and it has always been in the spirit of the event o see ppl having a blast. They ever broke out the radar at Calder and clocked cars on the straight.

Its pretty sad when ppl see Police and panic or feel threatened. Sadly it seems to be the norm. If you walk past police on foot patrol in the city...whats the big deal. In a perfect world if your just driving along and pass a plice car then it should be the same thing. Well thats at least how i view it.

You only feel threatened if you have something to hide... like a massive turbo under your bonnet lol

My car has 175kw @ all 4 wheels :spank:

Highflow CAT and air intake filter, gave me 25kw.

BTW I am running a stock exhaust system and stock ECU which is set on Advanced settings not standard.

I was actually talking about GTS-t's/GT-T's but even still, what are you going to do to go past 175awkw....

You only feel threatened if you have something to hide... like a massive turbo under your bonnet lol

not always, i panic every time i see a TMU drive anywhere near me... its the old feeling of "oh no, not again" that i cant shake off no matter what im driving

Ditto, except i get it in my skyline, my valiant and when i drive my sisters corolla... always dreading those red and blue lights, they're so evil, i wonder if they've been subliminely making me afraid of them through TV or something ¬¬

    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.
