adam 32
why warm your engine for 5-10mins?!?! i never have that sort of time in the mornings! i usually back out the driveway, close the garage door (1min max) then just drive off and keep it under 2-2.5K takes about 10k's for it to get to operating temp. oh yeh and try n stay off-boost on a cold engine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/ Share on other sites
adam 32
like people you can push yourself pretty hard without doing to much damage or none at all, you could faint but then you get up again. Not the same car with car haha thats priceless Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/#findComment-323285 Share on other sites

Sumo yeah but would you trust someone who makes a commodore? i believe at the bare minimum a minute or so to give time for the oil to get around the engine. i usually give it 3 - 5 mins and then drive easy 'till the gearbox warms up too. to me it doesn't seem like much if it will help at all to reduce wear. Holden are more conserned with percieved fuel economy of their cars-they dont want you to waiste fuel idling in the driveway, and then tell everyone that Holden has crappy fuel economy. Airzone
I kick it over, get settled, and proceed to tackle the carport / driveway. By then, the oil should have gotten around enough and I just take it easy until it's reached operational temps. It's useless to let your car idle for 10 minutes and then proceed to give it stick, because as RedlineGTR said, you still need to warm your gearbox and diff. Ash
i start my car, wait for the oil pressure gage to go up, until it stops (usually takes about 30 seconds) then i drive off keeping the car off boost and below about 3000RPM. also i find when the car is cold first gear is very rough and jerky? or is that just me? Guest Boxhead
meh i dont like to let engine warm up, i figure if im gonna stay low with rpms to let gearbox etc warm up, the engine will warm up in same time... that b eing said, i switch on car, then usually change cd in stereo, get settled. close garage door and reverse out driveway so about 30secs give or take idle before driving, i wont boost till engine and oil temps are at appropriate levels Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/#findComment-323631 Share on other sites
DREMEN
I start the car..... reverse it out the garage, stop, lock the garage door back up, out the driveway and I am driving.... But I take it easy until she is warm Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/#findComment-324266 Share on other sites
Kinks
I start mine, let it idle for a few seconds so that the oil has a chance to circulate through the engine and then put the clutch in and select 2nd, let the handbrake off (since I'm on a downhill slope) and then ease it into gear and drive off sedately ( I don't have the time to start a car and then sit around playing with my stereo for 5 minutes, and driving it gently warms it up faster anyway. arelh
cold thick oil at idle = no oil on the cylinders = high wear. start the car - when oil pressure is up drive off limiting rpm to <2.5K until oil is warm - that is oil presure is at normal driving pressure and water is at normal temp - best investment is an oil tempurature gauge Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/#findComment-324583 Share on other sites
king_kw13
Hey so have any of u guys got remote start at all? Hell yeah everyone needs to idle or drive slowly to let the water and oil warm up, but I would like the idea of remote starting the car knowing that I would be going out in a sec, and then jumping in the car and then taking it easy for less time before it is completely warmed up.... before BOOOSTING Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15798-warming-car-up/#findComment-324627 Share on other sites
Cake
i start mine, let idle for about 15 sec, reverse out driveway, then take it easy (under 3000rpm) with low load (driving off boost) as much as possible, until about a good 10km of driving, then gradually drive it harder if desired even audi's manual for my dads S4 twin turbo states that u should not warm it up before driving, but instead drive softly on the move until operating temps are up (they got oil temp gauge) unlike our cars which have oil press. the diff and gearbox do need to be warmed by driving not idling.
