hey dudes

i have a r32 gtst with the following installed

2 door coupe

rb20det (standard)

gtr fuel pump

4 inch mandral bent exhast

pod filter

600x300x76 intercooler + piping

mines computer (im told by previous buyer not 100%)

the car is currently running 12psi (0.8 bar) without a boost tap (i think its the mines ecu)

car ran a 15.00 with the above mods less the intercooler

now im told i should get a boost tap and regulator and wind the boost up to 16 - 17 psi then i should notice some more power?

would this be the next mod for more power or not? (looking at spending under $200 - $300 on next mod)

ps. could be the 4 inch exhaust that has up'd the boost

Say goodbye to your turbo

You could probably switch to a series2 R33 turbo or an R34 item and run 20psi or so. Smaller motor is easier for a turbo to make more boost without killing itself.

Might cost you a fraction more than $300, maybe $450 for a good used R33 S2 turbo.

The R33 item would probably only have to spin up the same rpm on your motor to make 20psi, as it pushes 12psi on a '33?

On a related topic... What is the stock boost on an RB20? I thought it was close to 12psi anyway? Definitely more than the 33's stock 7psi, i'd imagine.

stock boost on a stock r32 is 9psi

based on my experiences, the stock turbo won't make any more power after about 12psi. and after you approach 15 or 16psi, you are really starting to ask more of the turbo than its got in it

with the stock turbo i'd try it at 14psi but don't hope for too much improvement over what you have now

the rb25 turbo is only a mild upgrade, and may take 14psi with a decent increase in power but again it won't make more than 14psi without hitting a wall there too.

the boost is relative to the capacity of the engine. a 2.5L engine making 12psi is much more air being compressed than a 2L engine making 12psi. that's why a rb25 generally won't handle as much boost before it will blwo a turbo because airflow at 12psi on an rb25 is proportional to airflow at around 14psi on an rb20

anyway this is based on my understanding and my experiences.

I found the same. Mine before exhaust etc was 8.9psi.

Fitted the exhaust and it went up to... 10.9psi.

Going from 12.5psi to 15psi mine picked up 12rwkw. So 1.25psi for every 6rkw. Which isn't too good.

BUT what it did do was increase the mid range noticably.

Mine didn't have issues running that boost for close to 100,000km's (in total according to the odo ~178,000kms).

You have got to be kidding Randy.

Suggesting that someone run 20PSI through a stock R33 or R34 turbo? - Yeah good luck with that!

Answers: its running 12psi because of the massive exhaust. Anymore and it will cook the air making bugger all more power and probably go pop.

For a cheap fix get a 25det turbo and run 12psi with that and get your ECU tuned to suit. Should see ~180rwkw

If you want something decent get a hks 2530 and injectors+tune to suit. Should see 200-220rwkw. Anything bigger and it will be a lag monster.

But yes, get an RB25 turbo. Will take a bit longer to spool up but they flow more for a given pressure (ie. 12psi on an rb20 turbo and 12psi on an rb25 turbo, the 25 turbo will be flowing more air).

Also get a good ebc.. I put one in on the weekend and while still running stock boost (~10psi) until I can get a tune, I have it set to keep the wastegate shut until 9psi, spools much faster and feels a bit quicker :)

my turbotech boost controller comes on very early, has never spiked, and holds boost flat on the dyno every time

i personally can't see the advantage of an EBC at 4-5 times the price

I had a turbocrap one on my previous car (rb20det) on the lowest setting it would spike to 15psi and then drop to 10. Hopeless piece of shit. Some bleeder seem to work better then others but I still don't really trust them.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
