yeah the lights on our stagea after compliancing suck bawlz!

I was under the impression that the ballasts ran off the 100v line am I wrong

?

12v in as normal, and the ballasts transforms this to 80-90 volts

When I had mine complied, I asked if they could to be left as is. I chose a complier that agreed.... another said "no we have to put the globes on a grinder and destroy them".... What a crock of crap!!

After getting the stag and looking carefully at the lights, I would say that there isn't any real reason not to allow them. I have also sat in front of the car and didn't find them any brighter looking at them than Halogens. However (and this may not seem to fit), they are incredibly bright when driving, with an amazing spread of light. The high beams were yellow in comparison. I changed these to Navara Arctic Blue Halogens (4000 deg K) the high beams just about match the Xenons and cost only about $38 each. The higher temperature is whiter, but is shifted towards the blue end of the spectrum. Everything in reach of the lights looks whiter, especially road markings and signs. The light is closer to daylight. Works the same way as your Mum washing your jocks in Persil.... you get whiter whites, (but they are actually bluer)!! haha

The thing that I like about the lights is the "cut-off" that they have. They don't go near anyones mirror or on-coming traffic.

the xenons in your stagea ARE NOT self leveling, and that is what makes them illegal. (if you were to load up the back of your car, your lights would aim upwards more, and shine in peoples eyes, rather than re-leveling to the correct height)

and by law, RAWS workshops ARE supposed to destroy the xenon units.

if you load up the madwagon just adjust the headlight height on the dash switch simple.beats me that they dont alow the zennon then they put in halogen globes that are as dave said the equiv to the old 6 volt lights in the beetle.i mean its not farkin safe and i stuffed if id pass them for rego like that if i was doing a blue slip or even a roadworthy

Sorry, my main point was that they don't have to destroy them..... they can send them on with the car, even if they do remove them. My complier said...'I knew that you were going to re-fit them so I saved you the trouble and left them in"....suits me. I know the technicalities of the self levelling stuff, but when you are allowed to go and fit 4000K lights to anything, it doesn't really make sense. Most of the dazzling of lights on the road are due to poor adjustment not to brightness.

I agree, my previous halogen lights were much more dangerous, uneven bright spots and poor visibility because the housings were not designed for that bulb. A lot of work goes into shaping a housing for a particular bulb to get the light spread correct. The factory Stagea HIDs give a very even light which cuts off nicely at the top for oncoming traffic, which the halogens dont. I have never been flashed at, nor seen any discomfort when coming over a hill crest, i dont believe it is an issue for oncoming traffic because of the eveness of the light. I feel much safer with the HIDS and the authorities need to revisit this.

Just to add a bit to my crapping's on previously in this thread...

...a while ago I was buying some brighter bulbs for the high beam on the S2 and found out that the guy selling me the bulbs used to do compliancing on Stagea's. He said the reason that they where illegal was not to do with the self levelling issue. I cant remember his exact words, but it goes something like this...

..it has to do with distance the light travels before becoming too dim. Xenons are very bright for a distance then the luminesance (sic) drops off dramatically. Whereas the halogen light, while duller in brightness, the light intensity dims more gradually.

The issue with Xenon's is not the distance the light travels or the brightness, rather, it is the rate at which it drops off at a certain distance and this, I assume, would be to do with its wavelength.

I hope that makes sense. If you go to any auto retailer they will have sales charts showing the different light intensities and the distance the lights travel, so you can compare the different bulbs depending on your application.

Has anyone had their car complianced in Bris and had them let you keep them? My car will be making its way over shortly, and would love to at least have the option there. Its a feature we pay for so i would like to have it. The risk of being picked up for using them is one im willing to take....

nah mate, i just stripped down my front end so im able to get a really good look at the headlight enclosure and how its all configured. the company that complied my stag kept the Xenon unit and wires intact, they just tucked everything (the wires) inside the enclosure out of sight and wired up the non-xenon globe.

i know that Mike40Sydney got his stag complied at the same workshop as mine, and they did identical work regarding the headlights. he switched his back to xenon in 15 minutes ;) but i never got around to it while my headlights were in the car

here are some pictures i just took.. this is behind the drivers side main headlight body (Stagea S2)

starting from the left..

- the box screwed onto the side of the headlight is the xenon unit, next on the right is..

- the 3 pin plug is the headlight leveler, next on the right is..

- out of the next 2 smaller plugs - one is the parker light and I’m not sure what the other one is, will take a look.. next on the right is..

- the lid to the main headlight enclosure.. inside this area is where you should hopefully find your Xenon D2R cable!

you will also need the Xenon Bulbs and this bracket that looks like it would hold everything into place

so before you do anything, make sure you still have the xenon unit still attached to the side of your headlight enclosure! after that, check for the D2R harness and socket which should be hidden away nicely inside the enclosure.. if its still al there then it would just be a matter of putting it all back together how it came out of the factory! sorry that i cant do a more detailed write up.. never got the chance to do this myself while it was still in the car :yes:

That's awesome stuff Brycey! My S2 is due on a boat anytime, and I REALLY want to keep my xenons... just to actually see the unit is a big advantage!

who cares really. i am sick of every one else with hdi lights driving on these rough roads up here and it looks like someone is constanly flashing you. self levvelling or not it's a load of bull and happens anyway. Iam putting them back in.

Just got off the phone to my mate the auto electrician said he is the only person in newcastle installing the hdi phillps replacement lights for "normal cars" (they replace hallongon's) and would be glad to hook my new lights back in. he dosn't see a problem with them they just white'n the road more not actuly emit a more powerfull blinding light.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
