Hi all,

This is not a new thing - we have all seen so many occurances of the same thing... however, I would appreciate it if someone would give me some pinpoints on the following. My car got pulled over, the cops popped the hood and waalalhh ... I got done for the following...

1. Driving lights were HID (must change) - side parkers were royal blue (must change) - THIS IS EASILY DONE NOT WORTH MENTIONING, I GUESS...

2. Front mounted intercooler + pod filter. Cops said that when it comes to air/compression mods - can only have 1... intercooler way too expensive and hard to install - hence will obviously choose pod filter. So now the question is, how do I make it so that I can maintain my pod filter (is this possible?) and if so - what do I have to do to make it legal - if there's no way to make my pod filter pass the EPA test thing - where do I get the stock filter from and where to get it installed?

3. Blow-off valve - said trumphets on the sides (got a GFB one) must be removed... luckily I got the one that comes with detachable trumphets and two metal slot-blocks so I can plumb it all back.

4. Exhuast - now, can someone please confirm that the legal standard is 98 decibels - when I got mine tested, it was around 92 or something... so I pass, right? If not, they want me to put a silencer in - can this be done to a HKS full cat-back 3.5 inch exhaust - if so, where would be the best place to get it done?

5. Spoiler - saying side edges are too sharp and dangerous - I've had enough and wanted a different look anyways - I will remove the smaller all together.

So yeah, those were the reasons for the defect....

They said I have 28 days (around 1 month) to fix all of the above - was wondering, if I can't afford it... how long can I just leave it "on hold" and can they impound my car in any way?

Many thanks for your time - much appreciated.

Kevin

legal is 89 db for exhaust

after ur month you will recieve a letter from vic roads suspending ur rego, then you must trailer ur car everywhere to get it fixed (like i did :stupid:) and yeah thats about it, they cant impound it...

what vic roads do you plan to go to to get this cleared? and who is doing your rwc?

also did they take fotos of ur engine bay and did they say nething about epa?

In regards to being allowed only one air/compression modification, I'm pretty sure that's not right. Any front mounted intercooler requires an engineer certificate stating that the structual and safety integrity of the front of the vehicle has not been compromised. After you fix all the defective mods I'd strongly recommend getting your car engineered. The pod is an easy fix, just go to Supercrap and buy a cheap pod filter schroud/cover to enclose the pod to lower induction noise, that's all that the boys in blue require. And as for your exhaust, put your silencer in, make up a plate with some holes in it and bolt it between your exhaust flange and the muffler, that should bring your exhaust down to the required 89dB. Plumb your blow-off valve back into your intake and as for the other stuff that's pretty self explanatory.

If you want the name and number of the guy who engineered my car just shoot me a PM.

But be prepared to pay around $600 for an engineer certificate, but in my opinion it's worth every cent knowing that you don't need to worry if you're pulled up.

I know how much of a pain it is trying to clear a defect, although with your mods it shouldn't be a huge hassle.

Good luck.

Hi mate,

Many thanks for your reply... I appreciat this, really I do!

Damn, then I'll have to get everything done before the 1 month then as I will need to physically drive my car around. Well, I plan to bring it to the Sunshine Vicroads in MELB... and I have no idea of who to go to get everything 'fixed up' as per their requirements yet... man, to be honest, this is my first time...

and no, they were in a hurry so no pictures were taken of my engine bay - reading your bottom signature note - you're a mechanic? perhaps you can help me?? Please let me know... PM if you could.... many thanks as I am so frustrated... getting married soon... this does not help.,

Dear mate,

thanks so much for your very detailed explaination of what to do... I appreciate this greatly.

The lights, the BOV, and spoiler - I can deal with quite easily... I'm just still in awe about the pod filter... it sounds (from what you said) simple enough to enclose it... but how and what do I need to buy... this sounds so embarrassing but I do not know much about cars - are you in Melbourne , can you help me? I am happy to pay a reasonable fee for someone to help me action this... if you can PM me some details of either yourself or someone that can do the above requirements for the the pod filter + exhaust, I would much appreciate it.

Many thanks, please send me a PM

do you want to keep it undefectable? (is that a word?)

id say replace the intercooler with just a pipe to clear the defect.

and with the exhaust, throw some steel wool in there to quiet it down for the test.

thatd be the cheap options tho, and youll cop another one once your car is back on the street if your caught.

Good question bro - yes please... as indicated before, I'm getting married soon and work has been hard etc... I really want to keep my mods and keep them legal as hell for the blue-heelers 4eva.... please advise.

Throw some wool in? then how do I get it out afterwards ...sorry for the dumb question...

if u want to cover the pod just go to bunnings and buy a sheet of steel and make a custom pod filter box... i did it and it didnt take very long.. there is a tread about it in the DIY section.

damn sad to hear mate . were you doing anything stupid to get pulled over or did they just randomly pull you up? i say as said , make a pod enclosure . go to an exhust shop = and shove in a silencer , that way you can take it out later... silencers are really good - it'll deaden any noise... i put mine in the other week and it goes from a loud note - to a stock car.. amazing.

what kind of spoiler do you have? thats pretty fkd up getting defected for that , never heard of anything like that..

was the spoiler an alloy spoiler? if yes then that's why they defected you for sharp edges.

i thought the exhaust level was 91, but it may be 89. if the car is made before about 1989 it can be louder though.

as for the pod, having the pod enclosed may still count as a mod, so you may just have to go back to the stock airbox.

Many thanks everyone!!

Much appreciated it, it's great to have you guys... really, many thanks....

OK, I will see what I can do, will take some pictures and will post up... I'll keep everyone informed on developments as they happen - I suppose, we all can learn from this...

Regards,

Confirm the pod thing.

If you have a good read of the Vic Road regs, it actually mentions that a Pod filter doesn't need to be boxes on EFI cars past a certain date.

I believe the paper/foam/cotton filters used to be a risk of having fuel from the carby soak them and then ignite.

I believe the 1 intake mod thing is still applicable though. You can either have a Pod filter or an intercooler.

Have a good read before you do anything.

1. Driving lights were HID (must change) - side parkers were royal blue (must change) - THIS IS EASILY DONE NOT WORTH MENTIONING, I GUESS...

Well you already know what to do there

You cant have a FMIC & a Pod.

You can have one, or the other.

So if you have a FMIC, best thing is to install a standard airbox

3. Blow-off valve - said trumphets on the sides (got a GFB one) must be removed... luckily I got the one that comes with detachable trumphets and two metal slot-blocks so I can plumb it all back.

Re-circ BOV's are the only acceptable type. And they must plumb into the factory spots.

You might aswell use the stock one. It works fine, does its job. And will make the car run better.

89 dB

You cant just use a silencer. It must be welded into place. Not just a "bolt in" type.

5. Spoiler - saying side edges are too sharp and dangerous - I've had enough and wanted a different look anyways - I will remove the smaller all together.

So yeah, those were the reasons for the defect....

And thats fair enough also, if its non-factory. It has to go.

This is something for you to learn from :)

More info there than you might realise, lots of links and pieces of information :)

My suggestion... Next time, before you mod your car. Make sure you are aware of the rules surrounding it all.

There are lots of things you can change/upgrade/replace if you go about it the right way.

Thanks mate, much appreciated...

I had the exact decisions in mind as yours... I guess the above, alike your suggestions, would probably be the only thing I could do... moreover, yeah, I should have checked the regulations first before modding my car... this should be a good lesson for us all...

Damn, the pain... but I guess the law is the law... this goes for everyone so I can't really complain...

once again, many thanks for all your help everyone...

Everyone is so helpful!!!

And if your a P-plater.

You better be thinking about selling the car, because it might cost you a small fortune with $1100 in fines for power to weight

silencers are illagle. i was going to get one put in mine but was not allowed. if epa/ cops see it by by.

Is that legal in victoria? I was under the impression that you must have a standard unmodified air box if you want to keep the intercooler.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
