I'm going to be installing a Sard (Single Pump) Surge Tank into my car (S13 Silvia), but I'm wanting to confirm the legalities of running this setup without sealing off the boot area. Is anyone able to point me to, or quote on the ADR's or NCOP's for this particular subject? I've looked in the NCOP Modifications for Light Vehicles Fuel Systems bulletin, and it mentions surge tanks, but nothing much else.

The reason for not wanting to seal the boot off is mainly because I'd like a little bit of doof in the form of a sub woofer. For this I can either drop the rear seats down (they fold down in an S13 Silvia) or just use the speaker holes in the rear parcel shelf as ports. If I have to seal the boot off, I would need to make a ported enclosure which keeps the sub box sealed off from the boot space completely.

I've been told that it's possible to have the surge tank in the boot, and not seal the boot as long as I run solid fuel lines...anyone know if this is actually true.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Brendan

I doubt it, im pretty sure you arent allowed any fuel(or oil) system in the passenger compartment, by sealing off the boot, you stop it being part of the passenger compartment. You could put the surge tank/pump in a sealed box and vent it to the outside. The same rule excludes the use of mechanical oil pressure/fuel pressure gauges.

silvia isn't a hatch back though...

as long as the boot compartment is seperate from the passenger compartment (ie, like an R32 skyline and from memory silvia has a rear metal divider too) you should be fine. the type of line little to do with it, though solid lines or teflon lines are a good idea as they breathe less (less fumes wafting around).

I would consult an engineer in your state to be sure.

FYI, S13 Silvia, although not a hatchback (it's a coupe), it does has fold down seats with a hole from the boot through to the cabin - there's no steel divider there at all.

Do you have any references about a fuel cell of any kind being in the passenger compartment.

I will get to an engineer, but before having to part with the fold, I wanted to know if anyone else here had any experience.

Thanks

Brendan

Just phone an engineer and ask, much easier then having them go "No, I won't engineer this car because"

They're more then happy to answer a question or two if you ring them.

no lines in an r33 boot either, although the r33 and gtrs have the little hatch to access them.

i am running a surge tank in the boot of my 33 and am in the process of making a Alloy box to totally enclose the tank, pump and all lines so as to have them sealed to reduce fumes, and in the case of something failing, to have it drain to outside the car rather than inside.

I don't have those specific sections of legislation/adr on hand. I'm a bit busy atm, so don't have time to research it for you, but with a little bit of legal research skills, you'll be able to find it easily. I'm sure if you pay a lawyer they'll do it for you

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
