the big yellow one?

my standard oil pressure gauge was showing low readings yesterday morning (1 at idle - 2 when driving)

then after being parked for 30 mins, the gauge showed normal readings (2 at idle - 4 when driving)

than again a few hours later the readings were low again.

i suspect (hope) it's the standard sensor playing up.

EDIT:

i cleaned the plug terminals with contact cleaner. they were clean anyway.

the gauge is now showing kinda normal readings, just a tad low on cold start. it use to creep up to 5-6 on the stock gauge, now it goes just over 4.

at about 3000rpm, warm, its just under 4. this is a bit lower than it used to be. idle is a touch under 2, as before.

my question is, is there something that would actually cause low oil pressure (1 at idle - 2 when driving), and then recover from this?

or is this almost certainly a gauge/sender fault?

i plan on getting an aftermarket gauge, but sandwich plate etc, it's gonna take a while. i'm guessing you have to drop the oil in order to do this. no way around it?

Hmm interesting, i used to get similar things with really low oil pressure. It would only do it now and then, like once a week. I would be sitting at a traffic light or something and then suddenly my oil pressure would go down to like zero and id be like ;) but there were no signs of any problems so i never thought much of it. Hmmm might check my sender aswell.

Where is the actual sender located? Im looking at that pic and have no idea where that is??? (Below the intake runners??)

How much oil is in the sump? How old is the oil? What grade is the oil?

less than 1000kms old. 7.5w30 genuine nissan semi-synth. dipstick shows full. car has never used oil between changes.

the stock sensors are renowned for being crap (in the GT-R anyway), mine goes to 0 sometimes (freaked me out the first time). But all i do now is flick the engine off and on, and the gauge works again. I'm gunna get a quality aftermarket gauge, as i don't trust mine as far as i can kick it.

I am in the same boat. One second it sits normal, then it drops to 0. Scared me to death eh.

How difficult is it to get to that oil pressure sender unit in the pic? I can picture it, but i have hands bigger than dinner plates, so it's super hard for me to even get my hands around the oil filter.

Yeah well you could all be like me..... thought yeah its just the sender , they are all crap and a common problem.

BUT, on rebuilding the motor from continuing driving when the screws had come out of the back of the oil pump and impossible to see,

it was REALLY the oil pressure being almost non existent that caused the big ends to start knocking and burning!

I certainly would not wish that on anyone so hope thats not your problem!

Maybe you should do what my son suggested and fit a proper mechanical Oil Pressure gauge and avoid the end disaster. :dry:

Can u just replace the sender or something? Its just i allready have 2 gauges in my car in a pillar, and would rather not get another gauge (oil pressure) to just chuck somewhere on the dash. If its just the sender, would a new sender fix the problem instead of getting an aftermarker oil pressure gauge?

you can change the sender, but you'll need a nissan or nissan compliant sender. otherwise the values it's sending wont be correct for the gauge.

just like you cant hook up an aftermarket gauge to the standard sender and expect it to work correctly.

i'm not too sure, but have read that the nissan sender costs quite a bit. defi gauge price range :D

i have a mint sender if anyone wants to make an offer on it.

it might be the sender, it might also be the dash guage.

at the end of the day unless you put a mechanical guage on it, you will not really know the pressures for sure.

    • Hopefully it ends up being something manageable, like a hone, rather than a full bore—it would be a huge relief if it’s not as bad as it looks. Hang in there; these setbacks are annoying, but it sounds like you’re handling it as smartly as possible.

    • Thanks MBS206, i got that PDF but got abit overhelm with all the connections and tracing of wires. I wasn't expecting to plug the dash harness anywhere. i was just going to use my electronics jumper wires to plug into the right pins like ECU power, ecu ground, ignition trigger etc... I do have a few ratchet straps locking it down tight. Fire extinguisher ready and only a small amount of fuel at a time, enough to submerge the pump.
    • Thanks GTSBoy, i will do abit more digging. I am missing a blue relay near the ECU connector... so i will chase that up in the next few days as well

Though, you don't need the dash plugged in to get the motor running. What you want is power as how GTSBoy said. You need to power the ECU. Find in the above link the ECU pin outs (Verify them before just connecting them up from things written on the internet). Find anything needing power, give it power, find anything needing ground, give it ground. Then give the starter motor power through a big cable, and bridge the solenoid on the starter straight to power too.  ECU will be on, and when you give the starter power, it'll spin the starter motor, and it should start. I also hope you have a proper stand, and not just the engine sitting on some wood. You will want it bolted down properly.
