Just curious to know, how much ppl are getting back on their returns and if anyone uses any of the major tax brokers...

AND

Does anyone here have private health insurance? Who with? What benifits you get? I've been thinking about getting it for a couple years now but cant see the benefits of having it to be honest. The way i see it, either pay $800 to the taxman or $800 to private health which gives you no real gains anyways.

I got pwnd last year for earning above 50K and was only left with a measly couple hundred bucks :P

(ever had to pay for an ambulance callout?)

True True

...but then wouldnt the Ambulance Cover you can get for $120 p/a cover ya?

I had broken my ankle a couple years back and went to the public hospital where they fixed me right up. No fuss, no hassles....and i didnt feel like it was "sub-standard" treatment. Hence why i cant seem to find a *good* reason to have it. *shrugs*

Our clients get between $200 and $2,000 on average. One guy got a huge $15,000 return, but thats cos he had a lot of business. It varies really. Even though i work as a tax accountant, i do my own taxes - will be using e-tax this year.

Some clients have the easiest tax returns, yet bring it to us to do it - if I was running the business, Id charge them $50 for the 10 min job instead of $140. Judging by your previous tax returns, you can estimate how much you will get back, if its going to be a lot, then might as well pay for an accountant to take care of it.

A substantial refund largely due to me clocking up in excess of 30,000kms on work trips alone in the past year! Staggering and I have every bill, receipt, service to prove it but definately worth all the log book efforts when the refund came through today. Also pay a lot of tax too.

I took out Private Medical last year after refusing to up until then but needed to as started earning over 50K. Mine is about $60 a month from memory.

My g/f is an accountant and works for her step dad's practice so no fees incurred for my return.

Going to invest the return this year and buy a small present for the Evo.

I managed to get you a $105 refund, and that was before deductions (because i don't know what you have to claim).

How can you get more tax back then you paid?

through a certain type of loan we have with the bank, something about negatively geared tax breaks, dont really know the finer details, but it has everything to do with a Trust im involved in... my uncle set it all up because he's a legend and now everybody involved never pays tax again because we'll always get it all back, plus more

Most people's tax is pretty simple - can do it yourself with etax if you understand basic tax rules.... only when you start getting complex stuff, own business, CGT, big deductions you need to go to an accountaint... i did it one year, they charged me 300$ and got me the same return i would of got if i did it myself.. so i just still do it myself every year...

zorb may have a HECS/HELP debt you haven't included Kris....

If you earn over 50k/y definatly worth having private health - you can either pay $500 to the government for nothing or you can pay $500 for private health and you may get something out of it - i use it for extras etc.... no reason NOT to if you earn over 50k/y.

this is the exact reason i have gone with a taxman that knows what hes doing and works hard to get me as much as possible. We will be setting up a family trust as well as a business so that next year we can do the same... probably wont get it all back but 90% of what me and my wife pay which is still a car (altho it will be put straight back into our house to pump up our houses value).

Its called Tax Minimalisation people... not Tax Evasion.

i dont think i will be getting any return back this year :-(.

i got free private insurance (well the wife's job pays for family fully insured). as i see it, private insurance is crap, unless you need it ;-) ever heard of waiting lists on public system. one of my friend's brother did his knee while playing game and he had to wait for over 18months and it heart like hell (he ended up paying a private doctor to do it but it cost him over 10k in fees) private insurance then next day no problem. also you have choice with your doctor and do not get a hack, many registrars (as they are basically practising on you... you are their live guinea pig) and quite a few doctors are really really bad, too scary to believe but its true. i heard of one registrar and a surgeon who are banned to operate alone.

pity private does not pay for any part of the specialists fees :-(

also, if you ask the private insurer's staff they will tell you to get ambulance cover, as the insurance company might not class the ambulance callout life threatening enough to warrant them paying for it.

i could do my tax, have been doing it for all the years except the last two, but i am lazy and depreciation and sole trader makes it more time consuming then just paying someone to do it for me.

$4852, I love tax season :)

I don't have heath care, wont bother till I need to.

Im about the same as you, just a tad short cause i earn a bit less :(

Although i did get private cover, its worth it Adz for the cost offset if anything.

Gets ya another few hundred $$$ back, better my pocket than the taxman!

Oh, and accountants - SEE ROSSCO

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
