you can put it under your dad's name, but they will charge you as much as if you put it under your name, and worse still, you won't accure a no claim bonus cos it's not under your name. you'll find famous, just car and every specialist insurer has this policy.

with normal insurers you can get away with that, and at-fault accidents simply incur a higher excess (cos it's not under your name).

fok...basically insurance is gonna kill me...........

hmmmmmmmmmmmmz...........I'm sort of thinking of alternatives of cars if i decide against buying a skyline...

Im gonna spend around 20-25k ........

any1 got any good alternatives i should look at?

i was thinking of getting a civic coupe...but den again i want a skyline...

guilty:

long term (2 years): get a slower car or borrow your parents' cars but get an insurance policy with a big company *under your name*. you will get a 30% NCB from this (if you have no claims of course). then get your skyline.

short term: get a car a bit slower than a skyline and get less-screwed on insurance, but stick with the car for the foreseeable future and build up your NCB.

i am with famous now, I don't know if big companies will respect their NCB referral when i get a "normal" car and go back to one of the big companies

other cars...

my friend is going from an s15 200sx to perhaps a used vti-r prelude or my98/99 rexy. corolla sportivo? i don't know if there are any cars similar to skylines who you don't get screwed on insurance for (supra, silvia, etc)

i am 21 and i was lucky.

when i was 19 (late feb 2001) i got a used n15 pulsar 1.6 lx or whatever (base model). my dad put the policy under his name but it still cost $2500. renewal in 2002 cost $1600, which was pretty sweet.

got my skyline r33 gts-t in dec 2002.

i found out only when i was trying to get my skyline that the poliy wasn't under my name, but i sent a letter to famous saying i had been a *named* driver on the policy since feb 2001. they luckily accepted it, they didn't have to. technically i had 0% no claim bonus, but they accepted 30%.

so in a way, i was in your boat, but i wouldn't count on it working twice. it was kinda do or die for me cos it was after i put a deposit on the car.

hey all im doing is making my lancer look decent at the moment waiting till this time next year when im 19 and had insurance under my belt for 2 years see if it drops more, im not willing to pay $3700 ayear for a stocko skyline, probley in 1 year the skyline price will drop more aswell ;)

Some of you younger fellas that are 17-18 need to remember that a skyline is an extremely high risk car. They are quick and have a bad track record with theft. For reasons like this there should be no surprises when you receive quotes for $3k and above for a skyline especially with low or no no cliam and little driving experience.

That said, Famous certainly look like one of the better insurance companies for import vehicles given the level of service and competitive pricing that myself and numerous others have received.

young drivers (<25s, me included) can look at "sporty" hatches like the sp20, or the sportivo corolla. more expensive than a skyline (new), but you'll save more money on insurance and resale value.

not trying to say don't go for the car you want, but if it doesn't work out, they are pretty cool alternatives

There's a world of difference between a Skyline and a FWD girls' car.

There's some point where you can't drive hatches or Commodores any longer.

theres a lot of difference between front and rear wheel drive cars we all know that, yet not all fwd cars are girl cars, i seen a few fwd cars kill skylines down the quater mile even on the streets,

skylines have 1 thing that made me want to get one not the power the looks i love coupes and the lancer coupe just not to roomy and the skyline has the aggressive look also power can be made with any motor just costs $$$

well, me and the missus insure through suncorp in queensland and they are by far the cheapest insurance ive come across

only catch was being older than 25 (the missus was only 24 when we got it though, but because we do all our insurance though suncorp we wrote them a big suckup letter and they aggreed to insure us while woman was younger than 25)

i think we pay 1300 bux a year premium (about the same as we paid when we had the mirage insured with them) and the excess is 1000 bux or so;

seems pretty reasonable to me;

    • sold listed as a Tomei LSD 1.5 Way For 1998+ Nissan Skyline ER34 25GT RB25DE w/Open R200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/174006114594?campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms=&campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=71883f2ccc571356e0a757bc7adfdde2&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms= it went in like butter all gears, alignment, back lash etc, rotation and clearances correct, and if rolling all rotates smooth and free when coasting down road , clutch in or out over 10 mph smooth... its the binding, clunking and jerking from a stop that is most concerning, also seems like its going to tear the tires off in 10 miles of normal road driving.
    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
