A mate of mine who has a 2004 SS waggon and myself will be having a Waggon Off at Quit Motorplex on the 19th Dec. Had a bit of a chat with John and Chuckie at the Cruise last night and I would like to extend the invitation to all other WA Stagea owners. Everyone is wellcome but might be a bit far to come from East and North etc. Will be seeing what the MN35 can do down the quater. The only engine mods to my car are 3" exhaust from turbo back and pod air filter. Have no Idea what it will do, just want to "SMOKE" Pete in his Crapadoor SS :D . Be great to see a few other Stageas down there.

Yep c'mon everybody..... nows the time... put up or shut up as they say!!

You probably don't have to worry 'bout coming last, I think that spot may be reserved for me....(dead std drive train)....

Maybe time to change that!

It'll be a good night (as long as it doesn't rain like nearly every other Wednesday!!).

unfortunately I think with only an exhaust (which will raise your peak boost to about 9-10psi?) you may be disappointed against a SS wagon. With the s1's and s2's it seems to take at least 160awkw and then some to get anywhere close to a SS sedan and I imagine the wagon isn't much heavier.

I'm no fan of holden v8's btw, but they are a solid performing engine and the only performance advantage our stagea's have when stock is that they are AWD, so you'll "smoke" him in the wet but not in the dry. Not that its "hard" to beat a stock SS - a stock Autech (s1 or s2) would have no trouble at all :D

Still, you do have a chance so go and show them our wagons are capable of :(

He may win he may not I'm hoping for the latter. Be a shiite load of fun which ever comes first.

5.7L V8 against a 2.5L turbo V6. Both close to the same wieght. I'll Just have to lose a bit of wieght off my own ass between now and then. See iff that makes a difference. :D

Hope to see a few more Stag's down there on the 19th.

Think it might be close :( ...from our experience yesterday with a VS SS in Brett's Blackie once we hit 3rd it was all over for the three dudes in the VS SS, Brett slowed down and they gave us the thumbs up and a huge smile...i think they were impressed that a wagon had outdone them:) either that or he was completely p!ssed that some unknown car had kicked his Trev butt :/

*note this was of course on private property*

Can someone take video of it so we can all see how it goes or lots of photos :(

Dont mean to ruin it for you but there was a big difference between the Gen3 (VT and later?) SS's and older ones. Even today's stock executive model V6's could probably beat some of the pre-gen3 v8's.

The most they had was around 220kw at the flywheel so its still a nice win for your stag, but the newer SS's are more like 260kw so the stag would need to find an extra 40kw from somewhere and still keep the low-mid range power. Like I said before, its not that hard to do with mods, but in the case of ausis's MN35, with just an exhaust and a touch more boost than stock its not looking good. :D

My car would have ~250kw at the flywheel at the moment and given the right conditions (cold ambient temps etc) I would probably have a chance but it'd still be iffy. I could be wrong but I think the outside temps make more difference to turbo cars than non-turbo. So if its cold your car might go really well and win, but if its hot it may fall way behind, whereas the v8 will not be as affected either way...

someone mentioned weather before...actually if they'll still run the drag in the rain, then that is by far your best bet. you'd leave him spinning his wheels on the starting line while your car will have almost the same acceleration as in the dry. AWD FTW!!! :)

I think its going to come down to the driver skills myself - the Gen3 motor is notoriously low on torque in the lower rev range, which means he will either have to flash stall the converter, or feed in a gutoad of revs and ride the clutch off the line, either way, balancing that with a (usually) slippery wednesday night track its going to be quite demanding keeping a commonwhore wagon on track.

Can't wait to see it either way.

Forgot to mention the large greedy front mount. Don't know if that will make the difference.

Either way I can see a few engine mods going in not to long after this. Need to convince the wife that its something I need not want LOL. Thats going to be the hardest part :(

You're probably not running enough boost for the front mount to be any more efficient than the stock one. Still, it could make a slight difference. Do they come with a front or side mount as standard?

Usually with our older stageas, going from the standard side mount to a front mount means using more piping to make the distance, which also means slightly more lag. Not that much but if you're still running stockish boost levels it may be noticeable.

Why not pick up a turbotech manual boost controller? Very cheap and will allow you to set boost at 10psi (or whatever you want) and will spool up quicker than the stock setup (assuming the stock setup is similar to s1 & s2 stageas). you'd need a boost guage as well in order to set it up. If your turbo is the same as the RB25 one, then you'll want to keep boost at 10psi or lower. :(

oh, and make sure your air pod has adequate heat shielding if it doesn't already cos with no heat shielding it'll perform worse than with the stock airbox and panel filter...the engine bay gets very hot so you'll need to make sure its sucking cold air from outside the car.

The NM35 have a front mount as standard. Not a very big one half the size of what is there now. I have noticed alot less lag than previous with the standard set up. Very easy to mount the new intercooler all the piping is already in the right place so very simple mod.

It feels like it wants more though in the boost department.

Where do I find a manual boost controler in Perth quickly. Time to Google.

Hate to start cheeting against my friend but with 2.5L against 5.7L I need every bit of advantage I can. Do not want to see him win I will never here the end of it LOL. But then on the other side if I do win oll Pete will never live it down.

Thanks for the tips.

manual boost controllers can be bought from the following perth stores: Auto-one, repco, c-red, x speed, rotormotion, etc. If you have to pay more than $50 and it takes you more than 20 minutes to install you are doing something wrong.

Good luck - might need to wind up about 15psi to have a chance.

You dont even need to win. Even if its a close drag it would be a nice result IMO :w00t:

Mostly Bump....

but I wonder who that woman was I saw in an S1 on Beeliar Drive, that drove so sedately behind me. Then at the roundabout comes up besides me and boots it.... errr like it still had a stock system and didn't go too well.... I restrained myself... she didn't even acknowledge us.... I think that she might have been serious!! If you're out there.... Motorplex... Wednesday..... the street is not for racing... especially with kids in the car.

Then I saw another (white) S2 Stagea when I turned at the lights of Gateways S/C... beeped but no acknowledgement.... 2 in less than 5 mins.... they are getting so common!!

So c'mon guys lets have a show of hands.... or better just a show of Stagea's.

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
