To R34 GTT owners;

How well does the R34 GTT smic handle on 200kw atw tunes?

Any problems with heatsoak on track days and/or long periods of spirited driving?

I currently have a r34 gtt smic on my stock r32 with plans of 200kw~ and was wondering if it will be reliable enough for the above.

People have rated the r34 smic to a maximum of 230kw~ atw but not many have mentioned about heatsoaking issues.

Hopefully there are a couple of r34 members on here with stock smic's pushing out 200kw with no probs?

Trying to decide wether i should install a intercooler waterspray ;)

cheers

Think you should install a intercooler waterspray or go FMIC cuz i reckon even at 180kwrw the SMIC isn't doing such a great job for my GTT R34 especially in summer hot days...

thanks for the info ;)

any other r34 owners with similar experiences?

My car currently has 160kw and havent encountered any heatsoak yet, although not sure how long that will last once i go past 180kw :D

What about improving ventilation around the smic? Like creating more airflow through bumper and undertray mods. I think cutting some small holes in the cover behind the smic will help with heatsoak.

What about insulation (i.e. heat tape/wrap) to keep heat away from the smic?

I reckon these will, at the LEAST, slow heatsoak down. The water spray is good, but i reckon is more finicky.

Not an R34 experience, but may be helpful...

I have an R34 SMIC in my R33, I have full 3" Turbo back exhaust, split dump pipe and Apexi Intake, high boost mod..

Not sure on the power, but at a guess the same as everyone else with these basic mods.

After a "spirited" drive, iv gotten home and thrown a hand on the back of the SMIC (i am missing the inner guard due to R34 SMIC girth and failed clips) just to see, and it is hot.. i mean HOT.

Normal driving on the open road with plenty of boost its similar. Its only cool when i dont give it stink.

One problem i can think of is that the Apexi intake is also very hot, IE sucking in hot air, as i dont have an airbox around it yet.

I dont feel any heatsoak issues or anything like that. It never hesitates or anything.

i got a 34smic on a rb20det 165rwkw and after 'you know' i've stopped, got out and touched both end tanks of the cooler and the hot side was warm to hot and the cool side is suprisingly cool. my experience.

I Ran into heat soak issues on the Dyno at 185rwkw on my R34 with the SMIC on a cooler day it might have been alright. Tuner had to leave it at that since it wasn't doing its job past 185kw went back with a FMIC and he tuned it to 210rwkw straight away.

In summer side mount is crap kills car power heaps.. Had one ditched it in winter, heading into summer because I couldnt handle it any more.. Fmic IMHO is alot better ..

If not use a alcohol or water spray over the cooler however it wont do much because it evaporates quite fast on a hot day. but will help!

Pat, just bite the bullet and install an FMIC with a return pipe that uses the stock hole, don't run a pod and you'll be street legal. and rig it up so you don't have to cut into the bumper support.

failing that, how about two SMIC's :) it'll drop your pressure a bit, but its still legal :)

if anyone is looking at getting rid of there 34 SMIC, please PM me as im keen to purchase one

i find my 34 SMIC made a difference when it comes too heat soak compared to the standard(r33 size) cooler. Also feels more responsive.

heat soak on a dyno is due to the fan not directed to give it enough airflow, this doesn't happen on the road.

In short it's not a problem you should be fussed about. Getting traction and brakes are worth more stress and effort than this one on a stock turbo.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
