Hey all,

I am looking at getting a "family" car and still want some power but also want something bigger and like a lounge chair.

Who has actually driven an ls1 powered TV commodome?

I have had turbo nissans for years and currently have an RB30dET powered R32. yes i know it is not going to be any where near as fast. i expect that but juus want an honest review from a skyline driver.

I would save up a wee bit more and get a VX SS. I think they got a different head design and with and exhaust and extractors will still be quite speedy. Appearance wise they are also a major step up (IMO). They can be had for 15k and upwards.

Ive driven the VU SS ute... I think it is a VX equivalent as the VT model did not have utes.

The car feels super fast, quicker than my R33 GTST. Can be thirsty on local streets.

Many early LS1s had piston slap defect, so make sure to ceck it out prior purchase as the only way to rectify it is to rebuild the engine.

Go for VX SS, with the petrol prices I am sure you can find one for 16 K more or less.

Ls1 with a good tune in it ($300-$600) will be your best bet. As for the piston slap and oil burning look it up on ls1.com.au, have yet to see one fail because of either issue. Both can be managed.

For the $$$ VX calais or statesman would be worth a look in a V6 even supercharged (V6 supercharged can have head issues if over heated)

In the V6 range you can get a good car for the $$$, but a well tuned LS1 would be more fun and as good on fuel as the V6.

Have a look on ls1.com.au for sale section, bargins can be had.

I previously owned a VX SS M6 and they are a great car. Mine had just 200kw atw but had plenty of up and go. Only reason I sold it was I wanted something different and at the time I had just taken a trainee position and couldnt afford loan + fuel etc. If you are going to buy a manual, hsv short shifter is the go too!

Mine had been rebuilt but still had a touch of piston slap. Didnt cause any problems at all though. It was just a bit of a noise but with the exhaust you could hardly hear it :D

I would recommend one to anyone. Especially how easy it is to pull some nice power out of them :)

Sold mine just over a year ago for $16500. Wasnt immaculate but I kept it in good nick..

I had a VT LS1 exec 6 speed before I had my line.

I had it for 3 years.

All I had on it was a set of 17's, full exhaust, some suspension and a tune

made 213rwkw and did EC in 2.02

Not bad for a big taxi!!!

It was big, roomy and confortable.

I had a few options in it - cruise, cd, air, power windows, lsd so yeah, was pretty good, cheaper to insure than an SS also. Never had dramas with oil consumption or piston slap.

I really liked that car!

Id suggest though going for a VXii LS1 powered commodore. Slightly more refined.

Just keep looking around, you'll find a decent one around after a while! Some standard, some minor mods, some wild mods.

One thing though I cannot stress though, is make sure you have an exhaust on it as its bloody quiet when standard!!!!!! :D

Nothing was actually wrong with the car, just not my cup of tea. I had a 78 Skyline C210 which felt better through corners than the SS did.

Mine was a Black 6Sp, and yes plenty of grunt and a nice sounding engine, however the interior left a lot to be desired in terms of build quality.

At the time I was tossing up between the SS and an R34 sedan. I went the SS to get away from imports from a while and because I always wanted an 8, but regretted the decision within a few months. In the end I had the car for a little over a year before I sold it.

Personally I would go for a nice 6 as theses would feel just as quick in general driving given how heavy the SS's are.

stagea, legnum both wagons, 4wd, 2.5 litre turbo 1998 models had for the money.

aristo, cima, chaser, all older 1996 odd. bit more unique. aristo 2jz is an advantage but the car is really getting a bit old.

Interesting perspective. Did you have any suspension mods done to your SS? Only because mine was lowered and had aftermarket springs & shocks and it felt fantastic around corners. It suprised a lot of people. Never drove one with standard suspension though so I can't really comment.

I know I'll get mauled on here but I don't understand how people like the look of Stagea's? I think they look ugly as...

Always had a soft spot for Aristos though :(

Yidz, I feel the same - my VT actually went ok around EC!!!

suspension mods were minor...

although my 33 would eat it round a track x 11ty - for a family car with grunt, it went well and could hold its own!

and yep, I agree, stagea's are ugly :thumbsup::P

Yeah I can imagine going from the 33 would of been a world of difference.

To be honest I cant wait to get back into a Gen III. Keen on a VT GTS 300 or a VT Clubsport... Love the HSV styling. Big cam, blower etc :D Makes me wonder why im wasting my time on my thing now! :D

    • Have a look at that (shitty) pic I posted. You can see AN -4 braided line coming to a -4 to 1/8 BSPT adapter, into a 1/8 BSPT T piece. The Haltech pressure sender is screwed into the long arm of the sender and factory sender (pre your pic) into the T side. You can also see the cable tie holding the whole contraption in place. Is it better than mounting the sender direct to your engine fitting......yes because it removes that vibration as the engine revs out 50 times every lap and that factory sender is pretty big. Is it necessary for you......well I've got no idea, I just don't like something important failing twice so over-engineer it to the moon!
    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
