Yo so i just pulled off the front of my cam gear cover to try and figure out what the damn noise was and found this thing sitting on top.. it's doesn't look like i'll be able to re-use it.. does anyone know what it is/came off or a part number?

Also, do i have to remove the front of the waterpump to get the cam gear cover all the way off? (rb26)

thx..

absolutely no idea what that was, and I put one of these together last weekend so it should ring a bell if it belonged there!

either way you are lucky it didn't kill the timing belt, and your engine.

Fan and water pump pulley off to get the timing cover off....

but thats the thing.....there's no rings in there.

there is a rubber seal for the CAS to the timing cover

there are 2 plates at the crank, one either side of the crank timing gear (but both are much smaller centre than that)

this is everything that *should* be in there

Hmm your right, definitely not in that picture.. it's pretty manky but i can make out JAPAN and 6LB printed on it.. theres some other numbers but i cant make em out the things pretty shredded, it's a metal ring with a rubber cover on it (or plastic)

It's about an inch and a half across, will check if a bearing cover is missing from the timing belt tensioners/idlers though.. the alternator is giving me grief, i'm guessing it hasn't been moved in at least 10 years

This is driving me nuts, i wanna see what it came off but i still haven't got the cover off.. one of the 10 mil nuts that connects the pulley to the water pump is jammed so tight it's impossible to pull off, cant get a grinder in their either, might have to try get an oxy and heat it up a bit or something.. probably gonna melt everything but cant see anything else working zz

Yeh i've pulled it out, i was expecting the nut to break as well.. taking a hell of alot of abuse, bought a big 10 mil ring for it yesterday and still not enough leverage, if i could get the clutch assembly part of the fan off then i could fit a ratchet in behind it and probably get enough leverage but i didn't want to pull apart more than i had to and i cant figure it out so might have to call a mech out to yank it off for me using some spec tools

is it metalic? its not meant to be there however.

could it be the front bearing cover off one of the timming belt tensioners/idlers? the lil bearing/dust cover for the actual idler itself.

Yep, Thats what it looks like.

Good call +2

try it with 2 ring spanners. lossen the other ones a bit, spray lots of WD around. then tighten the opposite one back up a touch and hold the spanner on it to keep the pulley still. have the pulley positioned so you can get maximum leverage on the one that's stuck. >_<

For SAU archiving purposes, and just cus i think its interesting the seal got spat out...

The serials on the tensioner bearing seal are...

2T52DF0716LB JAPAN NTN

EDIT: And rip the fan off, rad out, peice of pizz

EDIT#2: Snapped a pic of my old buggered one... cus im a nice guy *cough* :ermm:

sure is, would love to see a pic of the failure of the bearing. gtaaah have you got that fan pulley off yet? very good choice to not be driving it if its a bearing seal, you were really close to a dead engine

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
