Car Model: R32GTST

Year: 1990

Rim size: 17 X 8

Rim name/type: Speedy Hollow Type R

Rim offset: +35

Rim internal diameter: 410 mm

Front Brake brand: R32GTST M Spec

Caliper size: 4 spot

Disc size: 340 mm x 32 mm DBA 5000 Series

Pads: Hawk

Any problems with pad wear or coverage with this setup? Any pics? DBA have told me that the reason my DBA4000s cracked is beacuse i am running the GTSt caliper (intended for a 280mm rotor) on a 324mm rotor so the pad depth on the rotor causes thermal issues within the rotor. Result is a crack. Personally i think its their get out of jail argument...it has merit on paper but there is no way i think thats the contributer to why their rotors crack with track work

Note 32 mm thick x 340 mm DBA 5000 series rotors, ie, not a Skyline rotor. The R32GTST M Spec calliper is the same as an R32GTR calliper, except the GTR legs are 8 mm longer ie; the pads are the same. So a more valid comparison is 296 mm versus 324 mm in your case. That's 14 mm radius, hardly a big deal as long as you stick to appropriate heat up and cool down procedures. Track days can be a bitch for that, the inexperienced people just don't understand why I complain when they try and make me sit there stationery on pit entry. For additional capacity, the 5000 series are the go and 32 mm is available in 324 mm.

Cheers

Gary

I take it you are running a machine down 343mm rotor (HSV?) What hat do you use on the 5000 rotor ?

I used this setup for years and never a worry. From some time 2002 to 2006, the rotors i took off where still not undersized, but thought i would change them to new DBA 4000 just to make sure that i didnt have any problems. The new DBA 4000 are RUBBISH compared to what i purchased in 2002. So certainly encourage ppl to go to 5000 as they dont seem to have the same problems...lol they also dont have the same slot design :)

Fixed :)

You can stuff a 355 rotor inside a 17" rim. Nice work.

Any chance of a photo and or the rim internal diameter?

Got it in one on the rotors, I am trying something new this year in hats, I'll post it up once I have tested it out sufficiently.

That's not unusual, old rotors have all the stresses heat cycled out of them. For the 1993 and 1994 12 Hour races we drove around the streets for a few weeks, cycling the rotors for that same reason. We had not one sign of the rotor cracking problems we had in 1992. Same rotor manufacturer, same pads.

So certainly encourage ppl to go to 5000 as they dont seem to have the same problems...lol they also dont have the same slot design

I agree, for decent track work, the 5000 series are the go.

    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
