owned a Z for all of 3 weeks. sold it in a heartbeat and was lucky I made a profit. It wins all the awards cos the yanks were given the Z and not a skyline. so they think its top shit. Its nissan's global car, and as such received a lot of global awards.

It literally handles like a boat... if you want proof, get one out sideways and see if you can catch it and hold it out there like a skyline, silvia or any other well balanced car. Unless you're prepared to throw money at it, there are far more economically sound and stylishly similar cars available. Most of the cheap ones are shitty old 1989 and 1990 bashers.... and you'd expect to pay top dollar for a well looked after aussie spec or SEVS import.

The only thing its got going for it is a progressive styling, and a low centre of gravity.

That said, I have a weak spot for 2 seater 240Z's and 200ZR's.

If you're serious about buying one, have a chat to blipman on the forums, he runs aus300zx, lives in melbourne and can be found at some SAU events... very knowledgeable on 300ZX's.

So they handle like a boat but they have a low center of gravity?

my mate had to call his parents to come get him because he ran out of fuel on the car, wouldnt want that to happen to ur gf, not reliable on fuel, look at 4dr skylines for ur gf if she interested none turbo of course.

Apart from all the mechanical reasons, I think they're also starting to look their age. Look awesome side on, but the head lights and tail lights look terrible. If she's got the money, definitely get a Supra instead. TT models cost as much as a 33 GTR, but the NA ones aren't too bad. Don't tell any Zed driver that though, apparently they're nemeses.

Another reason not to get one is tons of dudes will follow her/harass her on the road. Especially if she has a big playboy sticker on the window, a custom plate, or any other indicator she's a chick driver.

hey my gf is considering buying a 89 300zx TT auto .... just wondering any one had much to do with them ? ... cheap to run ? look after ? parts .. insurence blah blah ...

and is 85000 - 100000k's the norm for the ODO of the 300zx ? any info or insight and opinions will be much appreciated dont want her getting cought up in somthing that will send her broke oh .... and its her 1st car aswell

this is like going onto a ford forum asking if you should buy a holden :action-smiley-069:

lol, youre coming onto the sau forum to ask about a car that most of these guys have never owned, why not go to aus300zx lol

Yep, those headlights are so horrible and old they used them on a Lambo Diablo !!! WTF drugs you on dude ????

To be quote honest I am pretty happy most people DON'T buy a 300zx, If there where more of them around they would be as common as an R33. Thats one thing I would never want to happen.

All those problems people go on about, are mainly due to 15 year old basket cases imported under the 15 year rule. Next you will be telling me all R33 and R32's exhaust smells like cut roses.

There are crap cars in every breed.

Just my opinion dude, no need to explode. I don't find the diablo particularly attractive either, not compared to some of the other cars within a similar price range. Besides, there's no way you could ever convince me the ass end of a Zed is good looking. I keep watching ebay for someone to bring out some nice altezza lights, but so far the only ones I've seen aren't much of an improvement.

yes. try turning a go-kart... then try turning a 300zx. both low centre of gravity, but different handling characteristics due to other reasons.

Tell that to John Penlington and you'll get an interesting reply.

Wow, what are you 3 years old?

I'd suggest that "your mate" should read the fuel gauge and visit a petrol station occassionally.

the z32 300 zx is an awesome machine if you know what your doing. yes they have a tight engine bay but who cares. if you know how to work on them there easy.

we have owned one for the past 5 years. done all its mechanical services including timing belts and pulleys, water pumps etc.

there technoligy is still very avanced for their time, even more than our rb25's.

once slightly modified (10psi, exhaust), they bloody move. very nice car to drive and hugs the road well.

only negative side to them is that they have overheating issues sometimes.

we bought a really good one so we havent had many problems apart from general things.

pay the extra cash and get a really good one, 91 model upwards. otherwise dont bother going cheap as most of them are cops.

cheers

I love this one. I honestly think its nicer than any skyline i have seen, and seen it race in underground meets and i havnt seen it lose. I found these pics of it on www.aus300zx.com, probably best place to go if you want info on these nice nissan cars

I have also seen the UAS Slot car and that thing is also a beast that apparently beats our GTR's around the track all day long. :action-smiley-069:

if you want to read about the engine read this

http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_109870/article.html

the vgdett was designed and developed at the same time they did the rb26dett.....both great engines in their own right.

i find it funny when people say the 300zx is a heavy boat.....seeing as how the gtr is heavier and the normal skyline is roughly the same weight

and yes they are exensive to maintain...but what sports car isnt

and who knows why these rumours are spread....before you said my gf read the first four post and said f this....now seriously you cant go by the first four posts alone beacsue

1. your on a skyline forum and some of the posts are bound to be biased

2. thats not really researching the car

now i bet you 40 bucks that when someone asks her about the 300zx she is going to say the exact same things those four posts said...which happened to be negative sides of the car..though some of the comments hold true...like the tight engine bay......but his is how these rumours spread...

and seriously...the guy that ran out of petrol....ahahahah lmao ahahah how can you not see that him having to ring up his parents because he ran out of fuel is his fault.....who cant see a low fuel warning light....and that light comes on when there is 15L left in the tank....plenty of time to get his ass to a servo....

remember

there is a difference between knowing about a car and being 'told' about a car

I have never driven a 300zx and only heard info off others which is usually about as realiable as the majority of information on the internet, in other words not reliable in the slightest. About as useful as arguing how good the GTR is against a HSV owner. Ask Zed owners, yes they are biased towards their cars, however im sure the Zed forums have a section where owners are asking for help with problems they come across. You'll get a much better idea about the car there. And just simply find one to take for a drive. All cars have good and bad points, there may be some bad things about it but may be many more good points that may outweigh the bad. Take yuor time, you want to enjoy your car.

good non biased reply

and of course the 300zx isnt the most perfect car in the world....but its farrrrrr from the worst and above most other cars going for the same price these days.....

remember.....you get what you pay for

if you pay 5k for a 300zx then of course your going to have to do some work on it.....the trick is to pay around 17k and know your going to get a great car that wont need any work done to it.....and from their just service it and you will be fine

look at it this way

if my mate came up to me and asked about (because this is a skyline forum ill use a skyline as an example) a skyline and i said....omg no way...stay away from them.....they are just POS....he is going to take my word for it even though all of you and i know that just isnt true...

if some people dont like the 300zx then thats fine....but that doesnt mean you can use a one time negative situation and gospel as a truth. i have seen an r32 over heat....yet i didnt write that skylines overheat all the time into my book of facts

Edited by ed300zx

Your getting a bit ahead of yourself now mate. R32's do not overheat like 300zx do. Atleast be honest about it, and dont give us gospel truth which we all know isnt known for its truthfulness. 300zx cars are 80% more prone to overheating due to its compact engine bay although you can get around this by making sure you get a nice big rad to replace the little one the car comes with, especially if you have a Z thats modified. Also they are heavy cars, but in saying that so is the supra, 3000GT, and GTR's including the R35 having 300kgs on the Z. But i think they do handle really well and the V6 engine configuration gives it much better weight distrabution then our inline engines. But we got AWD BABY!! :whistling:

so you telling me they overheated as soon as they left the factory floor?

some of you dropkicks need to get a clue, ofcourse it's going to overheat if it's stuffed, so will those precious little skyrines of yours.

for the record mine hasnt overheated ever in the 4 yrs i've owned it, all i needed to do was give the system a flush.

but whats the point? the original poster was stupid enough to ask about a 300zx on a skyline forum, then they are stupid enough to believe the negitive posts here, good riddence go buy a skyline instead.

not wanting to start a fight here...but where did i start proclaiming gospel??? all i said was i have seen one overheat....???? where was i not being honest???

i said 'an r32' not most r32s.....

ill add....yes they are prone to over heating....because of the engine bay....but not maintaining any cooling system on a sports car is going to get you into trouble...not just the 300zx...even though i have only read of about 4 cases where its happened...and the owners were the ones that posted the threads

End of the day i thnk nissan done a good job with the design of the 300zx. But in todays era everyone knows they are not the best. It goes R34 GTR, Supra and then between the RX7 and 300zx even though there a some 300zx cars that are just glamour.

Iv been through the 300zx forum and there are some nice examples of 300zx but the funny thing is when you go to the technical section all the posts go like this: "PLEASE HELP ME!!"

"300zx HAS PROBLEM SOMEONE PLEASEEE HELP!!" lol

And MAFIOSO, we dont come to your forum and abuse and act like a dumbshit. Why dont you guys go back and talk about loving your cars between yourselves. :whistling::)

thanks guys for input ... she read the first 4 replies and said f.ck that ! thank u guys

good choice mate , the Z is NOT a good first car or cheap vehical. Its an exotic that keeps company with Ferrari , Laborghini , Mazerati , ect , in the top 25 most beautiful cars of all time . indeed as someone already mentioned earlier the Lamborghini actually uses Z headlights but has a plastic stip covering the word Nissan on them .

    • The question then becomes - was there any fluid coming from that hole before you did the rebuild ?    You may not have noticed, of course.   Depending on how you did the rebuild, the possibility has to be considered that somehow (cleaning ?)  fluid entered that hole and is now being 'forced'  out by small movements of the proportioning valve.   From the factory, there's actually a small rubber plug in that hole but with age and under-bonnet heat it's quite common for it to 'go missing'.  That rubber plug is designed to allow the venting process but also to prevent 'stuff' getting to the area (prevent corrosion, etc).   The plug is also not available as a spare part AFAIA. Personally I wouldn't race and buy a new master just yet but keep an eye on the area to see if the 'leak' continues.   If you're concerned about brake fluid damaging nearby paintwork, cable tie a piece of suitable absorbant material over the hole and remove/monitor occasionally.    Operation of the proportioning valve and the brake master itself won't be affected, but also keep an eye on brake fluid level, of course. In terms of a new master, the genuine part is getting expensive, unfortunately.  Amayama is showing AUD900+.   I was searching recently and there's an aftermarket part available from Japan made by 'Parts Assist': https://zenmarket.jp/en/yahoo.aspx?q=BNR32%2bBM50&p=1 Whether it's any good I have no idea, although in my experience Japanese aftermarket stuff is pretty good quality-wise.   The above site allows overseas buyers to purchase stuff more easily from Japan but there are fees and shipping costs, of course.   The original Japanese seller page is here: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1197401228 Copper/Nickel is fine but I still prefer bundy tube and it's also cheaper.
