Hey guys,

I recently bought and got installed an apparently "good condition" second hand hypergear tr43 turbo... which when I bought it had a chip on the corner of one of the fins probably about half the size of this zero: -0-

When I asked the mechanic if this was ok he said it was fine.... I was skeptical... how can something that has to spin at such a speed and maintain a constant high output while attempting to stay in the exact same spot be ok when it doesn't have perfect balance? none the less I went through with it.....

I am meant to have a tune in a week by dr. drift.. who I hope will fix the slow spooling issue... because I am only getting full boost by about 4,800-5,000 rpm... an issue I am not sure if being caused by the chip....

I also am hearing a slight whistling sound when I drive... but that could be my dump pipe and the back of the turbo not being sealed 100%?

I saw hypergear (Tao) who said he doesn't think it is a smart idea to run the turbo if it is off balance at all because at high rpm it will wiggle a little and then start destroying seals etc etc...

I have spoken to the mechanics again.. who said they would give me the money back for the turbo... but I will have to be charged labour if they take it off again.. I am thinking i may just do it myself and replace it with a brand new tr43 myself...(because it will fit identical so no customizations that I will have to worry about)

I need some more opinions desperately! DO YOU THINK THE TURBO SHOULD BE REPLACED? OR WILL IT BE OK AND RUNNING CORRECTLY? tell me you honest opinions because right now I am so confused what to do...

Much appreciated,

Adam

Personally i wouldnt do it, in my opinion it would be slightly unbalanced and over time (who knows how long) could get worse and potential throw the balance of the wheel off and make it start hitting the housing.

you have to ask yourself, why is it chipped, what caused it? did something get sucked into it and chip it?

where did it end up? what the hell has enterd the turbo? and what might have passed through it?

basically, id be taking it off yourself, returning it to whoever sold it to you.

If it lets go your motor might get a mouthfull of metal

Thanks for the advice guys, really does help me rule out what to do....

this is the update from today and me spending about $50 on the phone bill to the mechanics and Hypergear:

Mechanics: The turbo they showed me they would put in my car (with the chip) "apparently" IS NOT the one that is currently in the car but the exact same model...

Hypergear: The turbo currently on my car has "apparently" got the same model number "0000029" as the demo one they gave the mechanics a number of years ago.. and the turbo that is on my car was also made a number of years ago...

SO NOW THE TEST... I worked out=

I said to the mechanics:"are you 100% positive this is not the turbo you showed me with the chip?" they looked me right in the eye and said: "no....take off the intake pipe and check it yourself"

so tommorow I will take off the intake pipe to the turbo... I will check the fins... if any single one is chipped I am going to give hell to the mechanics for lying right to my face!

if it is fine then hypergear should not make accusations ...

We will see..

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
