Had a bit of a search around and found some possible similar situations but still want some opinions

heres my problem:

My 1994 R33 GTS-t will drive pretty much perfectly fine, runs well, but when i put the clutch in (say at a stop sign/traffic lights) then it dies most of the time

before i had a play around with it adjusting the idle and checking the bov and everything seems ok (questioning wether or not i may have damaged the gasket when putting on an aftermarket bov for a week)

after i had it all bak together and had the idle sitting at about 800rpm i took it for a drive, ran beautifully, dropped to probably minimum of 700 rpm before going straight back up to where i set it, no problems

went out for tea, was fine on the way there and fine as i left

went to see one of my mates and as i pulled up at their place it started doing the stalling thing again

everytime i started the car back up itd jump up to probably 1200rpm then go back down and stall again

anyways drove it around a bit more, was still doing it so had to be constantly on the accelerator to keep it from stalling

got home and it stalled twice i think and i restarted it and it sat on about 1000rpm perfectly.......

now its a weird one, im thinking it has something to do with the AAC valve or maybe the tps but im not sure

i also think it has something to do with the bov cause i changed to a blitz bov for about a week with a home made adapter plate that was pretty much just a flat bit of steel with a pipe coming out of one side, only thing i really could have damaged here is the gasket though.

not sure anyway, need some help so everyone tell me what u think

more often than not, if something starts playing up after you've made changes then it's related.

So yeah, i'd say it's almost certainly related to your work around the bov.

You shouldn't have needed to play with the idle mixtures (unless you changed them when installing the blitz one) so i'd suggest that there was an issues there straight away and it's getting worse.

Check for a split hose on the feed as well.

just checked the bov, aac valve and afm

cleaned the aac valve with carby cleaner and sprayed a bit on the hot wire of the afm

still no success

doing it just as bad as b4

also cleaned the plugs with contact cleaner

bov has been tightened to 15ftlb on in 5ftlb incriments and checked it all out and it looked ok

its intermittent to a large degree, sometimes it will return to idle perfectly, other times it dies, other times it almost dies then picks back up

also has a unhappy idle at times where it will drop and raise 100 or 200 rpm constantly

atm looks like im just gunna take it in to get done under warranty, went in there today and they said to try cleaning the aac valve and afm hot wire and if that failed take it back to them

but still want to know what everyone thinks will be wrong with it, just to try and make it easier for them

also it seems to be worse at night time, will run good during the day and only stall every so often but as soon as it starts getting dark it gets worse

any additional information needed to help im more then happy to supply

EDIT: the only split in a hose is on the plumback hose that comes off the bov, but its a very small split that is half a centimetre if that, the hose clamp well and truly clamps the full circumference of the hose and i dont think that will be the problem

The problem is that you have fitted an externally venting BOV for that extra special sound that you love so much. Unfortunately, this is air that was previously recirculated into the intake manifold after the AFM. Your ECU is tuned to expect this air, but now it's gone.

End result? Your engine is running very very rich, and stalling.

How do you confirm this is the problem? Re-fit your stock BOV, or re-plumb your new one, and see if it fixes the problem. If it fixes the problem, the permanent fix is obvious:

1. Either plumb back your new BOV, or

2. Get a new ECU, and usually these can be tuned to stop the stalling

3. Increase your idle speed by opening up your AAC valve.

the stock bov has been back on the car for about 2 weeks or so now

went and played a bit more b4, ended up resetting the ecu (disconecting the battery and pressing foot on brake pedal for a bit)

plugged it back in and it seems to be alot better since but problem might come back tomorrow, it ran very well and held idle perfectly when i went for a drive and after i came bak, took the car out of the front and it almost stalled once but that may have been just been me

if it plays up tomorrow i think ill just take it into get fixed under warranty

or if anyone else has any theorys let me know

NOTE: I do have the stock bov back on, i mustnt have mentioned that in my previous posts, it actually ran fine with the aftermarket bov as far as i can remember to.....

If that is the case, then it's a simple leak somewhere :D

I have the same problem on my car.

I have noticed alot of the time it happens when steering is on hard lock. which makes me think power steering pump strains the engine.

But it also occurs when in a straight line slowing down to lights etc so who goddamn knows! :D

Ive also tried cleaning the AAC valve and AFM to no avail!

If anyone has solved this please post it up!

hasnt missed a beat today, Dragonforce: try resetting ur ECU

quick search would tell u how to do that but its pretty easy, just unplug battery and put ur foot on the brake for a few seconds

no problems at all with the car stalling now, returns to idle perfectly and runs a little bit better i think

Ive had the same problem with my car it used too always stall after driving hard but then would happen even when just pulling into a petrol station. I blocked up the standard BOV and it doesn happen as much but still happens in a few weeks buying a Power Fc and getting tuned hope it then goes away......

Its a known problem with 33's

Its ONLY a problem with people who remove/fiddle with the stock BOV.

If you leave the stocker there (or replace with a GTR one) you will never have a problem.

Sounds like a split hose somewhere in this instance as the stock BOV has been replaced.

Not stock BOV equipped skyline will stall (if other things like the TPS, AAC etc are all working too)

I had the same problem with my old r33 which was stock as bar exhaust and the problem ended up being the idle speed control motor, put a new one in and was good as gold after that. Just my 2 cents of input.

like i said, reset ur ecu

thats how i fixed mine, lol forgot this was my thread but other ppl seem to still be stumped, reset ur ecu and it should be fine if uve run an aftermarket bov then gone back to normal only for it to stall

    • Just wanted to pop in an update on my setup. The CD swap has been great, I love the mazworks housing for the overall simplicity. I ended up sealing my trans tunnel with a thin sheet of aluminum reused some of the holes on the trans tunnel, and laid some window sealing EPS foam around the edges. Works great, really quieted things down and sealed up the car.  As for the power comment. Right now I am also running about 650whp. with the way the bell housing is attached to the face of the transmission I have zero doubts it would be fine, mainly because the input shaft and main shaft bearings are seated into the bell housing adapter. This means the load is NOT on the bolts to maintain the power, rather into he casing of the bell housing; Yes the bolts are doing some work there, but with both shafts locked in zero worries.  End of the day, the Mazworks solution is the easiest and safest. no need to take your trans to a shop to get milled perfectly, it fits with minimal clearancing, and you can use all your existing clutch and flywheel.  Driving wise the CD has been great compared to the big box, I'll probably swap my final drive at some point. The serial 9 shifter is gooooood, my only qualm is how tight it is, it takes a fair bit to get use to, 5th and 6th are a bit eh/hard to find at times, but maybe I need re-adjusting, and I think my clutch master is very tired and needs a rebuild.

Firstly, i'm not disclosing my real name due to in real life circumstances surrounding my privacy and public image (sorry lol) Secondly, The only thing personal I am willing to share is that I'm from Sydney and a descendant of one of Sydneys largest mortgage firms. I got gifted my first ever car, a 2022 Porsche Cayenne and I love it to death. Ive been driving it for about 5 or 6 months now and honestly Im so grateful for my parents for gifting me this vehicle. However recently I've been working my ass off to afford my second car (which I need help deciding soooooo community help me out please?). Once decided, im planning to try modify it myself. Recent I've been thinking about getting a Skyline, particularly a 25GT or GT-V, yes I know overrated as hell, but I'm also considering a Chaser which I recently came to love. However my dream is to one day own a 180SX (So hard to find clean versions and im not really into importing).  Lastly before I send this off, I want to apologize if I sound tacky or pretentious. I try not to and want to genuinely learn from everyone and anyone. (Im no expert in this area) Thanks for reading!
