Hi SAU members.

I have been experiencing another, and an unusal problem.

It's a one problem after another and fix them as I go.

In the end, I hope I'm left with a car that is 100%. Nearly there hopefully.

On the weekend, I was coming back from mums place late one night, and at a set of lights where I was turning right, I floored it, and after taking the corner and accelerating in a straight line, the AT light came on in the dash.

I immediately lost 1st, 2nd and 4th gears! OMG

I limped home, but made it the 20km and pulled into the driveway.

I switched off the ignition, and after the TT shut down, I counted 15 seconds, then re-fired up the ignition.

The AT alert light was off, and I had my gears back.

The car ran smoothly and the tiptronic and full-auto worked fine for the rest of the weekend.

It's now monday morning and I'm doing 130km/hour up the F3, and the light comes on again.

I immediately lost 1st, 2nd and 4th gears once again.

I waited till I got to the Hawkesbury River turn off, then pulled over and shut down.

After re-starting, sure enough, the AT light was off, and the transmission appeared to re-set.

I drove into work slowly along the old road, without problems.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Please let me know.

Many thanks.

Colosus.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on my technical ability. LMAO j/k

Yep. Check it once a week.

All has been good so far.

Chook,

Yep. Wyong Automatics are running the diagnostics on the error codes tomorrow morning

No trouble at all coming home this afternoon.

I hate intermittent problems.

Thanks for your help guys.

I'll let you know the outcome, and write up a Car Care Data Sheet.

Ok. No luck here.

The automatics specialist says that the R34 GTT does not retain the error logs for the tiptronic transmission.

Go figure. Are they having me on?

They stated that the only way that I can tell whats happening is bring the car in for a diagnostic, with the problem occuring.

(thats a bit hard when it only happens once in a blue moon)

Any ideas ?

It does retain error codes, run it yourself : http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=3605428

quite tricky to activate the diagnostic mode, takes a few attempts to get it right.

possible a shift solenoid by the sound of it ??

with the 33 auto if you unplug the brown electrical plug near your drivers headlight it will lock the trans in 3rd so 1 2 4 wont work

\have a look if you have a big brown plug near your headlight

Geezus wept. That came out from left field.

I'll look. So you are saying that it may be a loose brown wire there, if the 34 is the same as the 33 wiring?

I'll give it a go.

Thanks dangerman4.

ps................the problem hasn't re-ocurred since Tuesday, and I have well and truely been trying to make it happen. And ps again

It may be that the transmission exoerts don't know how to interface their gear with this particular car.

He said his gear reads only 80% of the computers in various makes and models.

Looks like its time for a new mechanic.

I'll keep trying.

Thanks again.

100% Shift solenoids, get them both changed (A + B) while your car still at least lets you use the other gears and reset the box.

It'll eventually lock you in 3rd forever!!!!

Many thanks 666DAN.

I take it this has happened to you before?

I'll ask the autotrans guys to change them.

Yep it fixed it 100% it's an annoying fault to find as when the solenoids are room temp, they test OK...it's only when you heat them up that you find they have gone open circuit. Change them both and never worry about it again :D

i had the same experience in my other car (mazda6). turned out to be low voltage from the stuffed alternator. sticking in 3rd was the cars "limp home mode". new alternator and no more problem, but a different car, might be related though.

i know its not the same car but in my nc fairlane i had the same thing, i was told when that happens the auto ecu has put its self in limp mode, it only happened once and when i turned it off and re-started it there was not a problem.

Hi Guys, sounds exactly like my problem, my mechanic found error codes 10 -vehicle speed sensor, 12 & 13 solenoids A & B. I was just about to order a new speed sensor as they said this would be the problem because it was the first error, glad I read this first. Mine started happening after a nice little fishy round a corner about a month ago, now whenever I pull up going down a hill it goes in 3rd until I turnoff and start again. I have noticed if I use manual mode from the start I can stop it from happening so until I get the solenoids changed I'll keep using manual.

Thanks 666Dan for saving me a speed sensor that is probably fine :D

Mine puts the at light on if I give it some in the rain or on the burnout pad at the drags

but goes out as soon as the speed drops below 5 Km/h

been doing that for over 2 years now

never been stuck in 3rd gear after doing that

only when I installed the Emanage one day it stayed on 3rd

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
    • I was able to get some underside photos while the car was on the ramp The suspension is all Altezza/IS200/IS300 so getting part's will hopefully be less of a headache
