could one of these car pc systems be connected to (or integrated into) the factory navi unit in a stagea??

No doubt that is possible. But I think it would be far too much effort when you could just buy a GPS receiver and software (with maps) for a few hundred extra.

how would you go about hooking up your sound card to your stereo system. the more i read the more im inclined to do the same to my r32. more specifically two amps where would they connect to.

RCA / Optical out. Good sound cards will give you lots of output options, then just run them to your amps like you would any other way. I'm not too savvy on hardware stuff, there might be a better solution but thats what I'd expect.

I am going to start looking to buy some bits soon for my pc too. :woot:

I've had lots of problems with my external USB sound card, i'd strongly suggest sticking with an internal PCI / PCI-express one. I cant fit a pci one in my PC enclosure though. It'd be awesome to have a sound card with optical out, directly into an Optical-input on an amp. When i was building my system, i coudnt find a suitable amp with optical in so had to go for RCA inputs.

and the internal sound card could handle two amps running? what about the acc cable?

No problems putting the output from the sound card into multiple amps. My soundcard is actually 7.1, so theoretically you could feed the 8 channels into 2 x 4CH Amps, or 4 x 2CH amplifiers. My carputer power supply has a +12v acc out, which goes to the amp. So if the carputer is shut down, the amp powers down too.

Christian,

As one of the other people said if you don't mind mounting the PC in the glove box or under a seat the ASUS EEE PC is a fantastic little unit and as it has a solid state hard disk (flash memory) there aren't actually any moving parts to it so unlike a normal hard disk it wont care if you drive down the worlds worst roads, Unfortunately it only comes with 4gb of memory in the machine itself. However can get an 8/16gb SD card and use the built in memory card reader for additional storage space. Using a USB slimline or slimline slot load DVD drive mounted in the glove box or the center console and it can play all your cd's and movies. Combine it with a USB touch screen, and decent front end software and it makes for a very versatile entertainment solution which doesn't cost much (comparatively to what most car audio places would charge for a similar system).

Another option for the front end software is Centrafuse ( http://www.fluxmedia.net/ ). Although it does cost money it is a nice piece of software and very easy to use and customize.

i have just found out today about the eee, looking at getting one.

try http://www.eeeuser.com/ for a big range of mods that can be done to make these more user friendly in a car.

OK, so I finally got my pc and installed it on the weekend. Everything is working great EXCEPT! the cheapass screen I bought doesn't have VGA in.

Wondering what in-dash screens people have used? I am leaning towards the Xenarc 700IDT.. it's going to cost $600 to get it here though :D so I want to make sure it's the right choice!

I'm just a little worried about the depth of the unit.. anyone got one in a skyline??

Edit: these don't look too bad either but don't know how the quality is compared to the Xenarc.. it's a good 50mm shorter though..

Porares M70MN 7" manual in-dash

Might be a little better, the Xenarc 700IDT doesn't have adjustable veritcal tilt and with the slope of my 32 console it might be pointing a little too much towards the roof

Hi guys, i was thinking the same with a carpc build. I'm not going through the DIN way, was thinking of going through the little notebook way.

I was thinking about getting this

- Gigabyte M912 - Slightly bigger than a eee pc but with a swivel screen and touchscreen function (great for the garmin PC GPS software i have)

%5burl="http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Notebook/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2835"%5dhttp://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Notebook/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2835"]http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Notebo...ductID=2835

- car mount for the eee pc or RAM mount

h%5burl="http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/sf240-asus.htm"%5dttp://www.mountguys.com/product_p/sf240-asus.htm"]http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/sf240-asus.htm

I don't know about prices yet but from what i've read the notebook should be around $700. The car mount is around $20 US. The RAM mount is a bit tad expensive, johnny appleseed sells them but i think they were around the $200 mark.

I went with the VoomPC2 from mini-box, whacked a stick of ram, 120gb 2.5" HDD and a slim DVD burner, total cost including shipping and the items I bought locally (just to finish the box off, doesn't include monitor and peripherals) was AU$554. Pretty damn fair price for a fully thought out solution, you couldn't put something together here for that price using the same components and it is so tremendously smaller than what I came up with using old desktop components!

Had a closer look at that M70MN from Porares and the lcd specs appear to be indentical to the Lilliput screen with out the motorisation. It is also smaller than the Xenarc 700IDT which is a big plus. Am going to give the Porares screen a go :(

how much is that screen bubba? on the site it says to call up

im looking at just getting a screen to fit into a single din like that one

They quoted me $462 + $29 delivered anywhere in oz.

What are you going to use it for? there are cheaper options if you're not going to use it for a PC..

ye thats too expensive for what i need it for

i currently have a laptop carpc setup - n i just wanted a single din screen to use instead of having to pull out the laptop all the time. ill just plug the screen into the laptop.

wat other places r there that have din screens mate?

If your laptop has TV out then there are many options, if you want in-dash with VGA input, then your options are limited to like the Lilliput GL701, Xenarc 700IDT and the Porares M70MN that I'm looking at.

I have a non-touchscreen indash 7" LCD here you can have for $200, my setup doesn't have TV-out so that's why I'm getting one with VGA input.

Yeah I got mine from Jaycar too, $150 delivered?:(

Those 3x that I mentioned in the above post are all single din, the 700IDT is a good 50mm longer than the GL701 and M70MN. The thing that leaned me away from the Lilliput GL701 is the fact that it's motorised, as far as I'm concerned it's just more sh!t to fk up :)

pm me a pic of it n ill let u know mate

pic of front n back

thanks heaps.

Here is the pic off the jaycar site, it's currently installed in my car so I can't take a pic of the back (won't be pulling it out until my new screen arrives) but I'll take pics of it installed when I get home :)

Edit: blah won't let me attach images and I can't link to the jaycar site as dynamic image pages are not allowed :(

    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back. Progress pics to follow -
    • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
    • Hi, Will the R33 GTR rear brake backing plates fit a GTST? I'm struggling to find GTST ones but can find new GTR ones.   Thanks.
    • I also got the same floor mats for a bit of extra bazzaz haha
    • Some more close up pics now that I’m back to working on the car, the loop pile is nice but again haven’t compared it to the other types in person, it’s hard to tell from the pics on the website. View of the hemming on the edges too, it comes in 2 pieces - front and back, honestly very happy with it for anyone on the fence.  Also attached my previous pics from further up as it didn’t let me post them directly before. (Nothing worse than photo bucket pics that aren’t hosted anymore years later)
